Ive noticed that on older foils (masques block and urza's block) that if you can peel off the outer layer you are left with a flashy blank foil, id love to make special proxies out of these, has anyone ever attempted to do this? and if so please tell me any effective methods to get the card face off without damaging the rest of the card, and any other possible sets that this special foiling method is used.
I would have to recommend that you use acetone on foil cards (Urza's block, legacy works better than desity, Shards of Alara and Masques work well, M11 is very very easy, SoM and beyond do not work well, other sets work with varying difficulity to acetone off the face)
When you peel off the plastic like layer of the older foils, sometimes it takes some of the foiling with it and other times the surface of the card is kind of sticky (might not be the right way to describe it, but they don't feel as smooth). I know that with the pre-release promo from Prophecy sometimes if the cards were stored in a dry and hot/warm place for a while the plastic layer that the image was printed on would separate from the foil card (Say if you left it in a box in your car for a month during the summer this could happen) but that is the only case I know of that is similar to what you describe.
