I read an article on quiet speculation about how Vintage desperately needs new players, but the price of admission is beyond 99.9% of most people's capabilities, and something needs to be done to fix that.
Between reading Pat ":rolleyes:geenius!" Chapin's ideas on the subject and everyone elses, my plan is this simple:
Announce the coming reprint of power cards.
Over the course of a year, offer a service available by mail or participating stores where people can trade in authentic power cards in for trade-in credit to wizards.
Something like this rough draft:
Black Lotus is worth 500 points.
A preselected list by wotc includes this possible trade-in options (and more, it would have to be decided by wotc):
10 points: Cryptic Command
10 points: Fetchland
15 Points: Underground Sea
15 Points: Mana Drain
E.t.c.
But for whatever card you trade in, you get a new border style replacement of it.
This is the perfect way to both lower the cost of power, without the owners losing any value, and without actually reprinting the original card. So for people who decide not to trade their's in, they will be members of a select few with sheer collector's items, which is what the original black lotus should be, not a unattainable necessity. Then after a reasonable percentage of power cards are accounted for, release a vintage collectors pack for 100$, that includes a full set of power and quasi-power, foiled with new border styles.
This would solve all dilemmas, the only argument is that WOTC would have to fit the initial bill to start this kind of program, but honestly, it's an investment opportunity to increase player count in all kinds of tournaments. Players who couldn't before play vintage will be able to, and Vintage players will have access to (practically) free cards from other formats like T2 and Extended.
Then WOTC can vault up the old cards and watch the people start flowing in to all sorts of tournament formats they never before would enter.
Enjoy.
P.S. I of course welcome all dissent, grumbling, and argument. But please don't whine "that will flood the market with too many good cards and decrease their value" because the cost of magic singles NEEDS to go down right now more than anything. So shush.
