Alright guys I'm back with this week's deck tech for Grixis mid-range, I took it to fnm for the first time for the full roundedness of what standard.
So I got some new input. Different tech options. And overall the deck feels great.
So here's card break down, why I'm running what I'm running.
Dream eater: this card is great in every match. Vs control it bounces a teferi and catches them off guard. Vs mid-range it does the same intercession of bouncing a threat and allowing me to counter and remove anything on the back swing. Vs the aggro match it's a blow out card. On your opponents swing drop in the dream eater to block and bounce a creature to basically room their tempo.
Card has over performed.
Eldest reborn: it's a great card. Mid game it can basically seal the deal by just drowning your opponent in your card advantage. Late game it has turned the game around as a week needed top deck. I play this over ral and Doom whisperer.
Nicol bolas the ravager : this is our boss monster. Bolas eats cards, makes huge swings in the mid game. Going this bad boy makes for these best tool boxing in the format. Drawing cards, dealing with threats, and making lines of play with the reanimation that just make my day.
Vraska's contempt : this card is my MVP, it deals with the 2 biggest problems in the format. Teferi & Lyra.
Exiling teferi is a no brainer in the control match and that's the first thing you'll think of when running it.
But the real threat that comes up every match is Lyra. Her legendary status makes her immune to cast down.
That also applies to shalai and the new Aurelia running around.
Chemister's insight : the draw power is real with this card. The draw 2 then jump start to boot is broken. The card advantage early and late is undeniably good. Fixes bad late game top decks.
Vance's blasting cannon: this is my new pet card. It's this formats Chandra and nets you extra card advantage every turn.
An early game cannon basically a Phyrexian arena with no downside. Not to mention the great synergy between cannon and Surveil mechanic.
Allowing you to set up turns off plays that just take over the game.
Murder : this card was teched in over cast down and leave coil to deal with Lyra. And other high powered legendary baddies.
Ionize: this well rounded counter is my favorite. I chose this over sabotage cuz setting up a draw Vs ending the game faster appealed to me more. Also not a double blue spell. Making it easier to cast.
Thief of sanity : thief is a tank, card just plows through your opponents deck stealing the best cards and netting you extra advantage. Card is great in about every match up. Playing powerful cards outside your colors feels nice as well. Usually about 2 swings in and this card wind you the game.
Legion warboss : warboss is MVP in any Grixis builds period. This card is the highest rated card in this deck for me. If I had to choose between cutting bolas or warboss. Id cut bolas easy. In control matches the tokens alone got so out of hand they settled the wreckage my board of tokens. Leaving me with warboss and Alot of land to protect said warboss. It's great.
Some arguments people had was that warboss is terrible in aggro/ creature heavy match ups. I disagree, if you open up removal/counters you just keep clearing these board state until your opponent gases out. Then you drop this bad boy let him go ham on your opponents.
Essence scatter : easy& self explanatory, lots of creature match ups so this card makes for a great early opener.
Cast down : aside from its down side , still one of the best removal in standard.
Syncopate : now this is a new toy of mine. Good early and mid game. Throwing your opponent is curve. And what I likes about it most is how flexible it is. Great well rounded counter spell.
Arguels blood fast : this card should just be in every black deck. Pure raw card advantage and allows you to basically dig for answers.
So this is my deck tech, hope you enjoyed it. I put alot of work into this deck as reference to others who wanna make Grixis mid-range for standard.
Also be going to gp Atlanta this year for standard side events to give it a full and vigorous run on a super competitive level. So please comment. Leave me your opinion, whether you liked the deck or not. Message me for any questions.
ID LOVE FEED BACK!
This deck looks like a lot of fun to play, very strong hand in the way of control. What sort of testing/records have you seen with this build so far?
I think I like the fact that you have ritual of soot in the sideboard, one of my favorite cards for the format. I'm running it alongside Find//Finality in my Jund build. What do you side out to bring your Ritual of Soot in vs a go wide strategy like G/W Tokens? I'm guessing that the Rakdos shockland from next set will help your mana base out.
Do you have any way to deal with resolved enchantments or is the plan only focused on disrupting them?
How has your mana base been working for you currently? I like the use of detection tower, does it come up often as a one of or is it under performing in your build?
Plays against explore Decks very well. Which has become popular online and at fnm. So there's spot removal / counter mb make that match 80/20 split.
Boros angels on the hand is trickier due to the legendary status so some times they get away with the game cuss situational removal. Why I opted in 2 murder but that aside it's a comfy match say that it's a 70/30 split if you open well. Control is this decks match though. Been so many g1 that legion warboss has just stolen, then g2 just take out the removal that doesn't effect the match up like essence scatter, murder, cast down, put in duress, negate, unmoored ego. Just proactively play game 2 , dismantling the strategy. To me it feels like 95/5 split in chances.
The weirdest match is tokens. Because thief of sanity steaks there gas, then you're making tokens. It's fun, then there's games you open spot removal and the token player just goes nuts cuz my removal can handle the wide board.
50/50 g1, but g2 strong 85/15. Due to negates and spots coming in.
Just side out card at the top of your curve like eldest and chimera die to them not being huge swings in the game due to your opponents wide board state.
Now enchantment are a whole different animal. If you're talking azcanta, enemy blood fast things of that nature. Just hope it comes down a turn or 2 , to late. So you can Syncopate or Ionize. Now if you're talking tribunal or seal away, dream eater makes for good tricks on that note. Wait till the eot. Bounce the enchantment so you're dude coming back won't have summoning sickness.
My mana base has been doing well, Its dominantly black, with one ofs of red & blue in other mana costs. So sometimes it happens getting screwed on a color. But oh well, if rng gonna screw you. Shouldn't feel bad about losing that game. But for the most part you hit black hard enough that removal is alive early. So it has happened that removal to stall to I hit my labs had come up.
Detection tower is clutch, I love that card. For right now with only 2 shocks I can use in my colors, I decided to run 1 tower. So I wouldn't see to many hands with check lands and a tower. But okay testing against a closer friends of mine, who ran vine mare and carnage tyrant mb, it came up Alot. This deck deals with the 2 worst threats that a spell heavy deck like this would usually Struggle with. Also the dream eater suprise blocks it, eldest reborn caught both the horse and the tree by them selves a few times, warboss comes in hard core as well. Giving you his 2/2 body to block with and a 1/1 token to block the horse.
But there were games tower just plowed right through hexproof threats after hexproof threats. It was great, is run 2 if it weren't for the fear of bricking. But come next set, a definite 2 of.
Hope this sufficed as an answer. Thank you for commenting. Been looking to talk to people on here!
No problem! great to hear your results and how you are thinking through this deck. I feel like people don't just roam and comment on individual decks enough.
