Quick Info

This is a test decklist for a prospective Innistrad-themed Commander deck akin to the Zendikar Rising Commander Decks. For Innistrad, I figure the Deck colors and themes would be GW Humans and UBR Morbid. Each of the two decks would have three new cards - one Mythic Rare commander and two rares. Thus I've included three Wastes as fillers. For some reason, the extra Wastes register as "not legal" for Commander, so two of them have been swapped out for an extra Forest and Plains, respectively.

Early Game

Early on, the Human Survival Deck wants to build up its forces through tokens, +1/+1 counters, and ramp. By turn 3, it should have at least one creature on the field ready for Auras and Equipment.

Mid Game

In the mid game, Human Survival wants to start playing some removal to deal with threats, and to start finding ways to draw more cards to replenish its by-now-depleted hand. Many of your vulnerable, meek Humans are bound to die during the course of the game, so a good number of the cards compensate you in some way, such as putting +1/+1 counters on your remaining creatures or drawing you new cards to replace the creatures you lost.

Late Game

Once you've stabilized and built up a sizeable army of Humans (or a sizeable one-Human army), it's time to go angry mob on your opponent's behind! Your survivors can't hold out forever; sooner or later, you will have to go on the offensive and take your opponent down.

Dual Wielding Heirloom Blade and Deathrender

Heirloom Blade and Deathrender are a neat pair of swords to equip on a single creature, not just because of the +5/+3 stat boost turning even a tiny 1/1 Human token into a 6/4 beatstick or the inherent coolness of dual-wielding swords, but also because their abilities in tandem allow you to effortlessly replace the creature if and when it dies. Relic Seeker, Quest for the Holy Relic, and Open the Armory are all great ways to fetch these two swords.

  • Heirloom Blade
  • Quest for the Holy Relic
  • Relic Seeker
  • Open the Armory

Get a Clue

Clues are a pretty helpful way to draw more cards as the game progresses. Tireless Tracker produces a Clue off every land you drop afterward, and gets a +1/+1 counter every time you sacrifice a Clue. Ulvenwald Mysteries gives you a Clue every time one of your nontoken creatures dies, and gives you a 1/1 Human token every time you sacrifice a Clue. Briarbridge Patrol can be particularly rewarding, allowing you to cheat a creature onto the battlefield if you sac three or more Clues in a single turn.

  • Thraben Inspector
  • Briarbridge Patrol
  • Ulvenwald Mysteries
  • Tireless Tracker
  • Byway Courier
  • Root Out
  • Humble the Brute
