Quick Info

Hello y'all,

My name is Amie. I've been playing MTG since the days of Futuresight. My first big success in MtG came when I won a gameday running Knight of New Alara Aggro, and since that day, Knight of New Alara has been a pet card of mine. The deck has evolved past running the Alara Reborn -blade cycle to a much more aggressive deck. I league almost daily, and try to post my result on twitter, but I've been lacking lately. (Here's a shameless plug. My twitter is @amybonniehenson).

The deck is sadly nowhere near perfect and it has its fair share of trouble. I'm hoping that Dreadhorde Butcher is one of the two pieces that I am missing. It seems to fill the role of the aggressive multicolored creature at the 2 cmc slot. Having a death trigger also seems great. The deck could still use a tricolored 3 cmc creature like Mantis Rider to help fill the role of the aggression.

Also, this is a deck that runs 20 lands, and 55 creatures in the 75.

Early Game

This is officially through and through an aggro deck. The days of playing Collected Company and Vial are officially over in favor of the quick beat downs.

Dream hands with this deck would include these 6 cards or the similar:

  • Noble Hierarch
  • Mantis Rider
  • Knight of New Alara
  • Godless Shrine
  • Ancient Ziggurat
  • Stomping Ground

This deck wants to cast a mana dork on turn 1. It is the most important part of the deck. Despite how weak Birds of Paradise may be, it is a necessary evil. Hierarch is the preferred mana dork. Curving is very important, but with the current configuration, the 3 drop count has been lowered in order to test Dreadhorde Butcher while keeping some number of Tidehollow Sculler in the main.

A perfect aggressive start to this deck would go as follows:

  • Turn 1: Stomping Grounds/Ancient Ziggurat. Cast Noble Hierarch
  • Turn 2: Godless Shrine/Ancient Ziggurat/Pillar of the Paruns. Cast Mantis Rider. Attack with Mantis Rider. Exalted trigger. Deal 4 damage
  • Turn 3: Land. Play Knight of New Alara. Mantis Rider gets +3/+3. Attack with Mantis Rider. Exalted Trigger. Deal 7 damage.
  • Turn 4: Land. Deputy of Detention/Reflector Mage. Remove a blocker. Dreadhorde Butcher. Attack with Dreadhorde Butcher (3/3) and Mantis Rider (6/6). Deal 9 damage.
  • 4+7+9= a clean 20 damage.

Mid Game

This deck is definitely prefers to win the early game, but it can definitely hang in with the best of them in the mid-game.

The strongest creatures for the mid-game are:

  • Voice of Resurgence: Forces an opponent to stay at Sorcery Speed or give a large creature.
  • Tidehollow Sculler: Hand disruption
  • Deputy of Detention: Removal on a Creature
  • Reflector Mage: Removal on a Creature
  • Qasali Pridemage: Non-creature Removal on a creature.

This deck can grind while attacking with larger disruptive creatures. Knight of New Alara can make bears into threats. Resolving a threat like Siege Rhino or allowing an attack from a Mantis Rider is usually a death sentence for an opponent past turn 7.

Late Game

The late game is not a friendly point in this deck. Past turn 10, the win percentage drops significantly. Only 2 decks really ever take the game that long, and they're GB Rock and UW Control. Both of these match-ups come down to whether or not a Siege Rhino can resolve in time. Getting a Rhino down against UW in the late game usually is a win, but Cryptic is a great trade for them. Against Rock, Rhino needs to come down before Kalitas gets a hit in.
