The thing about power, after a fashion, in Okage is that everything is just so damned EXPENSIVE. Even more so than a DQ game. I mean, in DQ you do have to run around for a little while fighting monsters to earn the gold for that Chain Sickle, but it's to facilitate levelling up; basically, they design it so that you're doing two things at once, which is better than both separately. In Okage, prices jump like mad and if you can't keep up with them, your attack and defense are miserable. Granted, there are some great weapons and armor to find in dungeons, but they're hard to come by (usually in secret passages) and don't help for long. So yeah...I guess the designers really programmed the game for old RPG fogeys, heh.
I've never played Psychonauts but I've heard a LOT of good things about it! Lately I've been getting the itch to play some platformers or adventure games and that's high on my "Buy Used Now" list =)
It's well worth it. I mean, you might want to see if you can rent it, because I found recently that it doesn't have much replay value. However, I think you'll get a kick out of it.
I'm currently taking a break off of FFXI to play some other stuff. I need to beat Oblivion's main storyline and get the Mezune's Razor (or however you spell it), that 5 day long quest they have in there.
I also have all three Devil May Cry games that I need to beat too. I have a stack of game boxes up to my waist that each hold a game that needs beating, most of which I'll never touch.
how is everyone in the coffeehouse doing? I am not bad myself, just been going to the movies A LOT ( oh, by the way, everyone should see Smokin Aces and Blood and Chocolate, they rock in my opinion). Whats the current discussion?
Eh, not sad at all, Nai. I still have to get through Vagrant Story someday (LORD YEAH RIGHT WOW).
I don't mind buying shorter games, I guess. I mean, my hobby is collecting games so I'm always loathe to a) pass one up or b) get rid of one for any reason whatsoever =)
Hello everyone.
Mamelon told me I should start posting here, so here I am. * Shin' Hugs Mam
Pretty sure most people here know who I am, but for those who do not know;
I do tech support for Hewlett Packard All-in-One printers on the Mac. I take Windows calls occaisionally as well, and started there before accepting a promotion. The Mac department is generally only open to the strongest agents, so being allowed to work on it to me is like a promotion.
I live in Ontario, Canada; but I am from British Columbia. I miss BC alot, it is such a beautiful province.
My pleasures in life include;
Anime
MTG (obvious one, I play mainly Vintage in Real Life and Extended 2hg on MTGO)
Video Games (Huge Street Fighter/Fighting game fan. Currently playing Smackdown vs Raw 2007, Fire Pro Wrestling D, Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Street Fighter Alpha Anthologies, Capcom Collection II. I own two Playstation II and a Dreamcast)
Music (Listenning to, that is. Current Favs: Malice Mizer, Moi de Mois, Gackt, Dir en Grey, Nightwish. Also a big fan of Prince, Bjork, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, Chemical Brothers, Madonna, Hide, X-Japan, Guitar Vader, Puffy: Ami Yumi)
Comics (Don't collect much at the moment. crown Jewel of my Collection is Teen Titans #1, Original series)
T.V. shows (I do not watch T.V., but I am a huge follower currently of Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, and Smallville)
Transformers (Huge bot fan. Have a massive collection, though have not bought any in a while and am instead focussing on building my Vintage collection for Magic)
Graphic Design (Photoshop work. Also getting into Photography)
I also run [VOGUE} here, and a Street Fighter game in the Colleseum which is growing slowly.
I am Tao/Buddhist. Bisexual. Do not eat alot of meat generally. Do not smoke. Do not do drugs (I have in the past) And do not drink alot (When I do I prefer Caesars, Sake, Beer, Absynthe) My favorite food is Sushi.
Welcome to the 'house, Shin'! Nice to see you here. Man...we have a lot of musical favorites in common, it seems. Although I won't admit it because I think he as a person is kind of creepy...I'm a Gackt fanboy >_>;;
I really love Mana though. Probably one of my favorite people, both of them are. Genius people, extremely unique and creative. Both have impacted everything they have touched in massive ways. Most people do not realize the level of impact they have had here in the west. The entire Gothic Lolitta movement was started by Mana for instance.

Agreed. The very first J-rock I ever listened to was Gackt; he was my doorway into Japanese music, and I think that's one reason I always come back to him. Plus his compositions are always so epic-feeling and he has a thing for stringed instruments, which I love.
I've always liked Malice Mizer, but I tend to stay very close to the Gackt years when I listen to them. I like some Klaha songs, though. Who is your favorite lead for the group? I might already know the answer, but I wanted to be sure =)
If it is, then I am sad. I simply can not get into anime. If it's talk about some game, then I am equally lost.
I know how you feel man. But I think they are talking about a musician, which like you, again, I am just as lost. Japanese music just rubs me the wrong way, don't know why. Guess it's all the Jersey in my blood.
Yup, Japanese music. I listen a little to Gackt and Malice Mizer, but I truly prefer J-pop, because the up-beat songs always make me smile, and I don't have to worry about the lyrics unless I REALLY wanna know.
I do love Miserable, though, especially the music video that proves Gackt really can't dance.
@Ninja Pirate: I never really understand when people say things like this because, just like America, Japanese music has a lot of nuance and very different styles. Gackt is kind of an exception, I'll admit, because I've never heard anyone (even other Japanese artists) come close to emulating his style, but if you pick out a genre of American music, I bet I could come up with a Japanese artist who plays it just as well as we do =)
Well, except rap. Because I don't have a lot of experience with J-rap except for FLOW and Orange Range, and I don't like it much >_<;;
@Nai: Oh man, "Mizerable" is one ofmy absolute favorite Gackt songs. Although "Cube" will always hold the top spot there. One thing I like about Gackt is his lyrics, actually. They do lose something in translation, but they're always so visceral and close to my heart once I learn them.
Come to think of it, Nai, have you ever listened to Do as Infinity? If not, I bet you'd like them.

It's just a saying we use around here. Kinda make Jersey feel inferior to NY. ¡Im Sorry Jeseyites! Just our way of saying, "I dont like it, just cause." I'm just not into Japanese music, probably the language barrier. I really dont know. Ill take you up on that bet though. Primus. Who in Japan plays thrash funk better than Primus?
Agreed. The very first J-rock I ever listened to was Gackt; he was my doorway into Japanese music, and I think that's one reason I always come back to him. Plus his compositions are always so epic-feeling and he has a thing for stringed instruments, which I love.

Gackt of course, Klaha second. I like all the frontmen, it really is a different band under each lead mind you. Saying "I am a fan of Malice Mizer with Gackt" does not mean you even like the others at all. They each changed the bands direection majorly. It is not until listenning to Moi de Mois that you realize both what impact Mana had on the band and what era was his favorite.
Oh my god, Ninja Pirate, you picked the one genre of music I couldn't think of an example for. Mostly because Primus is so esoteric. Still, my argument stands =P I like Japanese and American music equally, but it seems like I've been finding so much more quality in Japanese music lately. I think one reason is that they don't really distinguish between their artists in any big way in Japan; it's mostly just music, and if it happens to fall into a particular genre, then so what, y'know?
@Shin': Agreed again, heh. I think that Gackt and Klaha could probably be called the "best" frontmen for MM without a problem. I'm not such a big fan of Tetsu myself, and I know next to nothing about their most recent lead, but I do know that everything I've heard from the G&K has been great. In fact, talking about all this has "Gardenia" stuck in my head. I'ma have to dig through all my CDs tonight, it seems =)

I get what your saying. I just like to be able to understand the lyrics ya know? Just the way I am. And I knew I could think of a good example. Not to gloat but who in Japan is better than say Reel Big Fish? Just wondering. I adore ska.
Well, I'm not saying anyone's better. Just that there's a lot to offer from both sides of the ocean, so to speak. for example, I love Marilyn Manson and always have. I thought he was the only metal artist I could really get into, but then a friend of mine burned me some Dir en Grey songs. Now I like them both.
I do see what you mean about lyrics, though. Not everybody (in fact, hardly anyone) wants to have to translate their songs just to understand them. I think lyrics are incredibly important, myself. Lucky for me I know some Japanese and found a Gackt translation page back in the day when I first started listening to him ^___^;;
I HAVE listened to Do as Infinity, actually. It's amazing what you'll find if you search up anime openers and closers. Naruto, for instance, has several quite good bands. While, yeah, FLOW and Orange Range are very rap-oriented (and I normally can't stand rap), they're very fun to listen to. I got Do as Infinity off of Inuyasha, believe it or not. I don't watch the show, but the openers and closers are pretty good.
I like American and Japanese music equally. To the one, I can sing along, which I enjoy. To the other, I can just enjoy the sound of the music and not bother with lyrics. Ever had a song that you listened to the lyrics, liked it, and listened to it many times? Then eventually you look up the lyrics and find out that what you THOUGHT you were listening to was a very different thing than what you're actually hearing? I've had that happen several times, found I liked a song that was actually disgusting to me, and that's why I turned to foreign music for a long, long time.
I want a genre for Blue Man Group. Any suggestions?
I have their entire discography on my hard drive to save random needs to dig. Gardennia is a good song.
I look for videos on YouTube all the time too. They have a bunch on there.
Oh lord, why haven't I looked up J-rock videos on YouTube yet? I'm so doing that tonight or tomorrow. I want to see some more Merry videos.
@Nai: Heh, true. Most of the bands I discovered on my own were through anime and such. I had no idea who Maya Sakamoto was until I watched RaXephon.
I love singing along to everything I have, even (embarrassingly) when I don't know the words. I know I've freaked out our neighbors on many, many occasions by popping some Gackt into the stereo and singing along in Japanese. Of course I don't think it matters who you are - you'll be freaked by randomly hearing a 25-year-old guy belt out "WASURENAIKARA!!!" In a velvety tenor, but still ^_~;;
Ah japanese music. Something I can finally comment on.
@Gackt: I think this is the first time I haven't heard any ill spoken of Gackt that wasn't at one of his numerous fansites. IMO, from what I've heard he gets a lot of undue flack. He's pretty good actually...
I need some good pointers tho toward some really good J-rock... besides MM.
But honestly, I think I love, out of all forms of japanese music oddly enough, the J-pop the most. Why odd you say? Because my entire list of music is 70% Hard Rock and/or Metal. My friends look at me weird when I have my winamp list go randomly from, say, Lacuna Coil to Utada Hikaru.
Oh and before I end,

I wouldn't be - because I do the same exact thing. Except in a more bass tone...
I just think that Gackt's...weird. I mean, he's admitted to being a 400-year-old vampire, so who knows what's going on in his head. But! So long as he makes awesome music I don't care who he is =P
I need some good pointers tho toward some really good J-rock... besides MM.
Hmm. In which direction do your tastes lean more; the rockish stuff or the popish? For the former, I'd recommend Merry, Pierrot, Luna Sea, TRAX (although they're Korean, but still) and Creature Creature. For the more popish stuff...kind of hard to say. Do as Infinity is always good, and they have a big discography. Then there's stuff like Kagrra, Iceman, and Kotani Kinya. All good.
Oh! And anyone who is even remotely a fan of Soundgarden should give Aya a try. She's a Japanese rocker with a very American musical sensibility, and her albums are all produced by Glenn Ballard.
Hey coffeepeoples.. sorry I haven't been on much today. It was a bit of a day today.
Got another call from my credit card. Had to (begrudgingly) ask for money from my parents for some help paying it back until I can get my student loans to pay for it.
I got my school books today. They're heavy, but few in number. Always good.
Hopefully I'll be getting some good trades in tomorrow, and finishing my stack of Wrath of Gods. We'll see what happens.
A hearty hello to Shin! Please enjoy yourself. Recommended by Mamelon herself? Well I'll be an elf's second cousin (so it's legal).
And a shout out to Cecilia--you are and shall always be the Yoda of Legacy

Gackt is awesome and sexy as heck.

Electric Eel shock is another fun band...not amazing but their songs stick in your head and are in humerous bad engris mostly.
