Natural 20 is a clan dedicated to one thing, and one thing only- Roleplaying Games. Be they classics such as D&D, White Wolf, Vampire the Masquerade, or anime-inspired games such as Big Eyes, Small Mouth- this is the place to talk about them and enjoy them with your clan members. But that's not all! We're also into other types of RPGs as well- great console RPGs such as Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, or Final Fantasy, and even MMORPGs like Guildwars, World of Warcraft, or Dungeon and Dragons Online.
At Natural 20, we are very enthusiastic about the gaming industry and gaming subculture of geekdom in general. WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN [NATURAL 20]
One day, at Photon Eater's Glorious Haunted Castle, he and his henchmen friends sat down to a fun-filled game of D&D.
However, that night... Debbie went to check up on Marcie, and found out that tragedy had paid a visit prior to her arrival!!
Let that be a lesson to you. Don't be like Marcie. Join Natural 20... and save a life! Perhaps your own!

edit: I've made an intro post in the University. The Leaders Lounge is where we should begin discussion on how we're going to handle this. Photon, any suggestions on what I can do?
As for the Colo, I'll frequent it and I'll be able to provide any rules help in the University, as well as answering any other questions about D&D itself. I just won't be able to play or DM currently.

If someone wants to, they can walk me, someone who's familiar with some of D&D but who is extremely hazy on many rules issues (Five foot step what?) through the process of making a character just so that there's an example up there, if you think that's something you want. (I ask this partially out of selfish reasons as well, since I think it'd be fun for me.) Of course, you may want some more other stuff up there, first. Otherwise, I'm sure that you'll get no shortage of other people who are interested in d20 system, plus plenty of grizzled D&D vets who know exactly the sort of things they want.
Sounds good, Joyd. We could make it a tutorial-type deal. Go ahead and make a thread on the University if you'd like, asking "I know a little about D&D. How do I make a character?" or something. Something that will let us go through the process, step by step. It'll be long, but it could be fun what kind of character you'd want to build!
Here are a few things we need to think over and get done in the next few days-
1. Rules for posting- initiatives, saving throws, turn order, dialogue, combat, all of that will need to be considered.
2. Who will be running the first one-shots? Who will be running the first campaign?
3. We'll need to drum up some players, and see just how many players and DMs we will need initially.
On posting- I've found that it's usually fine to allow some liberties in most scenarios, letting the players talk and roleplay as much as they like- however, in the case of combat and heavily mechanical scenes (i.e. dungeoneering, etc), I find it best to ensure a turn limit and order, typically based off of initiative.
As for combat, if you remove the element of actual motion (but keep move actions intact, as a merely descriptive action most of the time), combat is pretty basic and not too hard to adapt. The GM should make all save rolls and such for all NPCs and environmental factors, and the PCs will be in charge of making their own rolls for attack and damage- now obviously, they won't be given foreknowledge of the enemy's AC, so this does provide a small problem.
There are two options, as I see it-
1. After each attack, the player rolls damage regardless of whether or not it hits, and waits for the DM to confirm.
Pros: Less metagamey
Cons: Puts even more work and responsibility on the DM, time consuming.
2. At the beginning of each combat situation, have a list of the AC values of all viable targets (introducing new ones when and if they arrive.) Then, the players can know for themselves from the beginning if they can hit a target or not.
Pros: Saves a lot of time, allows for smoother combat scenes
Cons: Puts vital enemy data into the hands of players, allows for metagaming.
I personally recommend option 2- it's a bit video gamey, but it makes for a MUCH smoother battle.

Omna, you're still learning how to play D&D. When you are a little better at it you're welcome to join, though you know I'd be glad to help you and hold your hand through the d20 system (which is D&D, bascially) in the d20 University.
Hello everyone! Nice good to see a new thread for natural 20! I also really like the thread title photon.:) I probably will not play final fantasy 12 for a little while not until wednesday or thursday anyway. I will be spending time with my family this coming turkey day i think its going to be great chatting and eating delicious turkey! (Oops I dont suppose to make myself hungry. :()
Has anyone tried to post dice results and then edit their post? I noticed that the dice result returns to the dice forumla when you edit but I've never bothered to determine if you can change the results of your rolls. I guess I'll try that out now.

While messing around, I found out that the dice rolls are constant. You can edit all you want, but nomatter how you change it, your roll (for the exact roll you make) is determined to be the same, probably based on the post number. For example, I tried making it more than two rolls on d4s and the first two rolls always come out to be 2 and 2. That'd good news for fears of would-be cheaters.
Glad to hear you learned that edits can't screw anything up. It's also cool to know that its based on post count, or something of the sort. It's good to take into consideration.
Me, I"m just watching you guys and helping make sure everything looks smooth and organized. Mind, I haven't looked yet, doing other thing around the house and around the internet, but I'll look in in a minute and see how you folks are doing. Glad to see you on the new thread.

I wish i understood what you guys talking about when talking about D&D i dont play i think the last time i played was like when i was in a freshman in highschool which was a really long time. However at least I love rpgs and i think i am going to try to beat septerra core its an rpg that i have on the computer its fun but its hard and i think i am stuck in that game oh well.
Hey people. I'm back from my group's one-shot today. I DM'd the level 1 adventure: A Dark and Stormy Knight. It was fun. The fighter in the party was a bald, black human who couldn't control the volume of his voice; his name was Jack L. Samuelson. Classic.
About editing posts and dice rolls: They may stay the same when editing them, but they DO change if you quote a dice roll. So be careful.

Reminds me of the Changeling in our WW party who, upon being arrested, gave his name as "Hugh Jwang", since he had no identification or even clothes with him at the time. Good stuff.
Just checking in for the new thread. The banner looks lonely... I'll have to make a new one tomorrow. I keep saying that and end up not doing it, but I really will this time... probably.
Don't worry Kevin, you're not alone in being kind of zoned out whenever they talk about D&D .. I played very briefly for Arguas' D&D group when their Paladin was sick, so I jumped in for the last session which was a 24-hr battle session- i jumped in for the last half of it when they asked me to
Also I'm kind of sort of making my character... just kind of not the most supremely motivated to do such, what with recent developments in my life... but I'm still kind of looking at the book when i get a chance..
Well, guys, I apologize if you feel alienated by the D&D talk, but you are always free to start up conversations about whatever. This is a place for discussion, so there doesn't need to be one master topic at all times.
By the way- fans of OotS, today's comic is the funniest I've seen in ages. I so want a dead wizard puppet.

[16:23] Alacar Leoricar: maybe if you do it'll make the porn more meaningful
OotS is Order of the Stick, a D&D-based webcomic that updates regularly. It's almost got 400 comics, but you should start from the beginning. It doesn't matter if you know all the D&D jargon or not--it's still freaking hilarious.
I adore Elan, I just want to moosh him up. And Haley cracks me up. I'm not a huge fan of Belkar and Roy, though. Roy is sort of the classic straight man to everyone else's insanity, so he sort of bugs me. And Belkar is... well, he reminds me way too much of Black Mage from 8-bit Theatre. A few "hey I am evil, I enjoy stabbing" jokes is funny, a year or so worth of them is old (says Photon Eater, world's biggest hypocrite).
(Edit: We should totally have an OotS banner for Nat20)

I am SO on this when I get home.
My favorite character? Vaarsuvius. Gender-ambiguity for almost 400 comics? Classic. Elan and Haley are in a very close second, with Belkar and Roy coming to a tie for third. Though I gotta say, nothing beats Xykon as an antagonist.
