WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN [NATURAL 20]
One day, at Photon Eater's Glorious Haunted Castle, he and his henchmen friends sat down to a fun-filled game of D&D.
However, that night... Debbie went to check up on Marcie, and found out that tragedy had paid a visit prior to her arrival!!
Let that be a lesson to you. Don't be like Marcie. Join Natural 20... and save a life! Perhaps your own!

1. This should go without saying, but no flaming/trolling, or otherwise being a butthead to members of this clan, or any other (We absolutely will not tolerate badmouthing other clans in Natural 20!)
2. Be open to different gaming ideas. Gamers are notorious for being set in their ways when it comes to how they think a game should run, so please understand that not everyone wants the same thing out of their experience.
3. Just as a general statement, please do not post material from any game system unless you are absolutely sure that information is available through an Open Gaming License.

6. When requesting friendship, all you need to do is ask. We're open to anyone being a friend, so long as you are willing to talk about gaming and want to contribute to the discussions.
7. Friends who have not posted since the previous thread will be removed. However, you can apply for friendship again, but don't be too surprised if I am hesitant to add you.

First post, yay! Not like I get a candy bar for it or anything...*nudges Photon*
Uhm, conversation...oh. I just started yet another new game of Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne this morning, because it's one of my favorite games of all time and I can't really stay away from it for very long. I have to recommend the MegaTen series to those people into things like Pokemon, but who are craving some maturity with their monster collecting. Mythology buffs and occultists (i.e. me) will love the games as well, considering every single monster in the game is cut directly from some world mythology somewhere.
So yeah. I've been thinking about doing something new for the clan; a capsule review feature where I take older (or even newer) games that are more obscure, don't have a US presence, or didn't get enough attention over here and review them in a shorter format than, say, my Den reviews. If so, there'll definitely be some MegaTen in there.
Ha ha, I was SOO tempted to be immature and do a 1 word post, beating ethersphere :D.
I never noticed you were dropping friends who didn't talk. Thats a great idea. I hate how every clan has 50 friends but only their members post in it.
Not so much dropping as creating a differentiation between those who are a regular part of the community and those who aren't- although I did drop a few who only posted once in the first thread, and then never came back. Of course, though, again, anyone is welcome to post here.
I think the idea for reviews is a great idea, pup. And I would give you a candy bar if I had one. For now, though, this +1 scythe will have to do.

A minor nitpick: Banners and Images should be above Sample Conversation Topics, or it will look like banners are a topic of discussion. Other than that, looks awesome.
As I said in the previous thread, hopefully I'll get to go shopping today. I want some new DVD folders and to look for Tales of Symphonia cheap.
Edit: I clicked into this from the last thread, so I didn't see the name until now... lol. I love it.

Eh, really? I think the separate spoiler tags keeps them nice and separate. But I can change it, I guess.
We should get more banners and images, though. It's sad, only having the one.
I've seen ToS go for about 13-25 bucks used, so here is hoping you get lucky. That's probably the best RPG for the Gamecube.

I can see if I can whip up a couple more sig banners, too. Maybe even ones without anime in them. Maybe.
Tales of Symphonia is ONE OF the best Gamecube RPGs. Paper Mario 2 and Baten Kaitos share the honor, I think =)
Speaking of which, Baten Kaitos Origins is in stores now. So any of you BK fans, head out and pick it up. I know I will once we can afford it.
Hello Everyone good to see a new thread. Ive really enjoyed paper mario 2 it was a really fun and entertaining game. Oh yeah ethersphere my dragon quest fan buddy I discovered a website that you might like alot. Here is the link: http://www.woodus.com/den/games/dq8ps2/monsters.php Basically it shows all dungeon maps, walkthroughs and more about every dragon quest game ever made.
I've never played Baten Kaitos, but one of my roommates has been playing one of the games (assuming that there's more than one) fairly heavily; I've been spending the past few weeks desperately trying to passively comprehend the combat system.
On Paladins -
I think a lot of the reason that GMs feel the need to put Paladins in difficult moral decisions has to do with D&D's alignment system, which is both very simple and very complex. I blame druids for this. Druids are generally seen as virtuous, (see recent OOTS strips for a counterexample) but they required to be neutral in some fashion. This puts "balance" as a virtue, and can make good and evil out to be two sides of the same coin, out to throw off the balance, rather than being opposite ends of a spectrum with neutrality in the middle; druids are cast as the class that is truly enlightened and noble, while paladins are either overzealous inquisitors or mere golden-boy cliches. (The tendency of many players to play paladins in one of those ways doesn't help.) Rare is the GM who would put the party druid in a situation where he would have to choose between burning down the grove where he was raised and releasing an undead horde into the countryside. A paladin, however, is often seen as a slave to his alignment (though in all fairness, he is much more beholden to it than most classes), which makes it easy to 'engage' the character by forcing him to make difficult decisions relating to it. (Wow, that was rambling and didn't make any real points. Also, I have nothing against paladins or druids.)

Baten Kaitos' System: OMG, don't even try. I have watched Josh play the whole game, and still haven't managed to figure out what the hell is happening in combat.

I think you can avoid someone being a slave to their alignment if you play them as a three dimensional person rather than a two dimensional stereotype.
Lawful Good doesn't automatically place a stick up the butt of a character. It doesn't turn the character into a 'golden boy', nor does it make them incapable of having fun.
Suppose a Paladin had a good sense of humor and enjoyed telling jokes? Suppose he enjoyed relaxing and having fun as much as the next guy?
On the subject of punishing them;
What's a minor moral dilemma is a huge one to a Paladin. Not only do such decisions endanger their Paladinhood, but it forces them to act on their sense of honor.
Paladins, more than anyone, are motivated by a desire to defeat evil. Motivating a Paladin is easy; Stick something evil in front of him, and he'll bash it.
I say bring his life outside of his faith. Give him something other than his god/group/cause to deal with. Give him a family, a wife, maybe old friends that aren't Paladins. Give them outside motivations and/or dilemmas, and their Paladinhood stops being the only target.

See, the issue I'm talking about is how there is a bad habit among DMs to fling Paladins into lose-lose situations in which they are forced to do something evil, or something equally evil- such as, kill an innocent for the greater good, or allow a terrible evil to roam the earth (the classic "my wife is pregnant with the devil!" scenario). The Paladin has no choice but to lose his powers, usually, RAW. The problem, ultimately, lays less with the Paladin, and more with the DM and their insistence on railroading a character into a moral dilemma simply for the sake of drama.
I agree, though, a Paladin can be very well fleshed out, and not be a goody-goody. Mamelon's character, Portia, is very much the atypical paladin. She's very good, fits her alignment well, but is also a complete person (we've stated she's sort of like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, if Buffy were also very magical and not a total *****).

The 'anti-hero' type has become so popular that a lot of DMs find anyone who doesn't hate his/her life and/or has some hidden hatred or huge flaw as boring.
A lot of people don't like characters with simple motivations. Everyone wants you to make a badass, whether you want to be one or not.
And, DMs and players should both loosen up on what kind of people Paladins can be.

Official Character Sheet Shredder of DAMNIT
DAMNIT: I should never have to shred my own character sheet in frustration.
A steryotypical paladan can have very simple, but a fleshed out paladan is just a complex as any other character.
I believe that Paladans, and true neutral druids are both very difficult characters to create and role play properly. These are both very much expert level characters.
I also believe that GM's like to challenge the person running the paladin. It's very fitting from a literary standpoint; where the paladin was always having to face a deep moral delema at the crucable of the story. This conflict, i believe, is the crux of the paladin and can be very rewarding to both the player and group.
Paladins also have to live with a very difficult reality. They have to adhear to the law. Sometimes, the law can impeed the path to justice, and this is one of the harshest conundrums that the paladin must accept. If he chaoticly turns his back on the law, he must accept his actions and in some way atone for them.
My beloved Roland had a very very bad day. You see, he is from a long line of noble horse breeders. As in almost all noble famlies, there is a black sheep. In Rolands case, it is his uncle. A dark and bitter old man who has been an anti-paladin in his youth. In his old age, he has turned to the wicked lord of liches, Velsharoon, in a cowardly attempt to escape the hell that awaits him in death.
By waterhavian law, the elder male of the family runs the farm, and in Rolands case, this duty fell to his grandfather. Well, while Roland was dealing with various troubles on the sword coast, he had no time to visit home.
He recently returned there, to find that his wicked uncle had laid claim to the farm. Nothing insidious happened. Rolands grandfather simply fell down with alsheimers disease.
Now at this point, there is a very evil man ruling over rolands homestead. There is nothing, by law, that roland can do about this, other than to challenge his own uncle to a duel to the death. Something which is completly against the wishes of his Mother. There are other reasons he will not challenge him to a duel, but I seriously don't want to get into such complex reasonings over the interweb.
Basically, Roland had to accept the fact that his Uncle will be living there for the time being, and persuing his goal of becoming a Lich. He had to grin and bear it. His uncle even rubbed it in his face. "You will not catch me breaking the law Roland. You are helpless."
That is an example of a good Paladin problem. It uses the character's background to create a conflict. This conflict does not endanger his ability to be a Paladin, but it does put his duties as a Paladin in conflict with his true nature.
However, should his uncle ever succeed in becoming a Lich, he might become a valid target for evil smiting.
I believe that killing a lich qualifies as a 'good deed' regardless of it's legal status.

Some gods would beg to differ. Depending on whom said character is a paladin of, hunting down his uncle specifically to kill him would be a sin (murder). However, if the uncle turned on the paladin and attacked him, defending himself would be the right thing to do.
Speaking of liches, who here thinks Keith Richards' phylactery broke when he fell out of that palm tree?
It all really depends on the law. In Waterdeep, for example, being a Lich specifically is not against the law. There are evil liches that live there. They simply either don't break the law or don't get caught. I imagine that they are all lawfull evil.
Hell, in Rolands city, there is a temple to Velsharoon (as part of the alliance of the gods of magic) Hehe.
Edit: And Roland was a lich for a decent period of time allbeit a Lawfull Good one.
@Keith Richerds I think his phylactery is his dangling cigarette of eversmoke.

Not all liches are LE. You have your Archliches, who are LG.
You know what would rock? A beholder lich.[/random thought]
And these are some reasons why I don't think I'll ever play a Paladin. because I don't like having the DM mess with my moral compass (seriously, if Photon ever did it I'd ***** him out, husband or no) and because my characters face enough of a moral and personal dilemma the way I build them without having to worry about religion coming into it.
I don't think it comes with being LG, per se. There's no one way to play an alignment, despite what the purists would have you think. for example, my LG monk Camui is pretty far from the LG pinpoint. She isn't so much concerned with gunning down evil and seeing that everyone is protected as she is very disciplined with herself and only concerns herself with threats that beat down her door or come calling on people she cares for. That's as close to a Paladin as I think I'll ever get.
Oh absolutly. Lawfull good isn't a one way of thinking deal. It's the combination of being lawfull good with the attitudes of your paladins deity which dictate much of the path they follow.
I've played a Lawfull good samurai which fits your description of your monk fairly well. He didn't concern himself much with the written law of the lands he traveled in. He did follow the orders of his dyamo.. to a point.. long story But his lawfullness was expressed through his code of honor.
Here is my little monster:
Background: This all stems from an NPC I'm working on. Think a dark simic biomancer. What he is, is a dark druid who has lost the path. He is completly obsessed with nature, but also with "improving" it. He isn't necessarily evil, but more just a perversion of the ways of the druids. Think of the naive scientest who madly works at creating the most terrible weapons simply out of the pure joy of discovery and invention.
Anyway, here is one of the little goodies he has created.
The Red Death.
It's created for 2nd edition D&D, but I'll avoid specific game stats, and just stick with the generals.
The "red death" is a black snake with two, parallel red stripes which run the length of it's body. What makes it so dangerous, is it's multiple venoms and methods of delivery.
It has normal snake fangs, which inject a necrotic poison (simular to that of a brown recluse spider). In addition to this, it has rows of barblike teeth (think a bees stinger). These are much softer and pliable than a normal snakes teeth. When it bites, these "stinger" teeth actually detach and burrow thier way into the victom. These pump a serious venom in, which causes intense pain and hallucinations. The third venom is that of a spitting cobra. This venom causes blindness and mild confusion
Im still tinkering with the mechanics of it, but I know that I want the venom of this creature to be special and difficult to treat.
None of the bites cause instant death, but I want them to be very difficult to deal with. I still haven't figured it out yet.
Anyways, it has a few more characteristics which make it dangerous.
First, and probably most dangerous, is that unlike other snakes, the red death travels in schools. They are chaotic evil in nature, and are slightly brighter than normal snakes. They have the capacity for a hunters cunning and a glimmer of reason.
I'm contemplating giving them the defensive capabilities of the Dispacer beast, but still haven't decided yet.

4. Please keep an active membership. If you become inactive, we cannot assure that your status as an active member will remain untouched.
5. When requesting membership, you may either PM me, or just post a response in the thread proper. It may take me some time to add you, depending on how available I can be. Anyone is welcome to become a member, so long as they have an interest in gaming- be it in tabletop games, console RPGs, or whatever!
8. Do not post links to Dark Dungeon. We've all already seen it, and it's just not that funny anymore, thanks.

Maybe.
And hey guys, don't forget to update your signatures with the new thread link!
On Paladins;
On the subject of punishing them;
What's a minor moral dilemma is a huge one to a Paladin.
A lot of people don't like characters with simple motivations. Everyone wants you to make a badass, whether you want to be one or not.
And, DMs and players should both loosen up on what kind of people Paladins can be.

Hell, in Rolands city, there is a temple to Velsharoon (as part of the alliance of the gods of magic) Hehe.
Edit: And Roland was a lich for a decent period of time allbeit a Lawfull Good one.
@Keith Richerds I think his phylactery is his dangling cigarette of eversmoke.
Not all liches are LE. You have your Archliches, who are LG.
You know what would rock? A beholder lich.[/random thought]

Yeah, a beholder Lich would be a great NPC villan.
I made up this nasty monster if any of you are intersted in hearing about it.
I'm listening. *waits in anticipation of horrible beastie*
If someone would write up a template for a beholder lich, I would be eternally grateful. I'd do it myself but I don't have the time.
