A game of "Capture the Flag" or "King of the Hill." In either game we have an imaginary flag. With Capture we have teams and with King its a free for all.
Sounds great. A cool way to get the clan playing. We can make it work using MTGO, MWS, or even GCCG. Most of us have at least two of those platforms, making our compatibility pretty good.

We choose a format, probably T2/Standard. You take the flag by beating the flagbearer in 2/3 games. When you take the flag, you post saying so, that way we know who is to be challeneged. When you challenege the flagbearer via a post/IM, they have 1 day to play or automatically lose the flag to you.
Another question is whether the flagbearer/winner has to use the exact same deck he won with (thus, requiring the winner to post his/her decklist) or enabling the winner to change decks as he/she sees fit.
Quote from Haloscope »
However, there are things to vote on. Teams or no teams? Standard, Extended, Classic, block, or a rotating format? Does the flagbearer have 1 day or 2 days? How about being able to challenge the flagbearer's teammate if the flagbearer cannot play a game within 1 day?
I think 2 days is probably good, though it would be easier to forget. But I guess the loser could just re-challenge the usurper if the flag leaves by default. I would just have a hard time prioritizing a game of Magic on a 1-day notice during busy spells in life, and I'm sure others feel the same.
I am of the opinion that we could start this with Standard, see how we take to it, and if we like it, add a 2nd flag for Classic (or some other format). We could even have a 2HG flag... adding to the team feel.
Certain members of our clan are obviously more active than others, and I think having teams makes it more fair. But there are, in my mind, three ways to do it.
1. Free-for-all. One-person teams.
2. The Olympics. A number of two-person teams.
3. Capture the Flag. Two teams of as many players as want to be involved.
In my opinion, we should vote for the option that would encourage the most participation from all teams / clan members.
I think a clan game is exactly what we need to stimulate more competitive play without organizing one-time tournaments that not everyone can attend. This would also give us the opportunity to create our own format, perhaps something like the format Jack wanted: Kamigawa/Ravnica/Coldsnap/Time Spiral/Time Spiral Timeshifted/and 9th Edition. Or, we could move to MWS and select seven to eight sets from any era of Magic (something like Ice Age, Mirage, Torment, Mercadian Masques, Mirrodin, Betrayers of Kamigawa, and Guildpact).
Whatever we choose as our format, I am willing to participate. I also think we should divide into teams, but if you are challenged and do not respond with a match in a day, your opponent should win the flag. If you currently hold the flag and know you'll be gone for a few days, you should be able to give it to a teammate.

Shouldn't we make sure it would be possible on MTGO? At least for the initial incarnation...

I think that's a great idea. Passing flag to a teammate. Cool.
Agreed. I vote on MWS. We all have it, or any of us could have it, and its free. I also vote standard/T2. Two teams of however many. 2 day limit with the ability to pass the flag to a teammate if you can't play, and MWS as the default format if there is no agreement.
As for MWS, I totally agree. Those who want to partake in the PDC events may pursue MTGO on their own, but as for ease and cheapness of use, I have to concur that MWS trumps the others. It's also a lot faster than MTGO. Games go quicker. (At least between Haloscope and me they do.)
I used to run 4x Utopia Sprawl instead of 4x Search for Tomorrow, but I find that it makes my deck more susceptible to LD. SfT has the extra benefit of land thinning my deck. The extra turn I have to wait to receive its benefit isn't usually an issue. I think the benefits outweigh the costs.
Edit: Also, as you can tell from the SB, I've opted for a morphic type SB. It is running Shred Memory for anti-Harvester, Dredge. And a LOT of white cards for turning the deck into a life gain engine.
Well, I acquired the cards on MTGO for my Jakdos Standard deck. I fully intend to play at SPDC this week, provided it's not 2HG. (Unless someone without red or black in his deck wants to be my teammate...) Ruinedlaw and I played a few games in the new Standard. (How exciting!) I saved a transcript from our post-game chat.
11:21 Polyjak: i like your idea about martyr of bones tho, he's probably better
than shred memory? or no?
11:21 lostdream7: and any of those could have drug the game a bit longer

11:21 Polyjak: i did manage to avoid your getting a pillory
11:21 lostdream7: its a good card
11:22 Polyjak: that was the first game where my deck actually meshed, too.
11:22 lostdream7: i would actually run martyr and shred memory in the
sideboard
11:22 Polyjak: every other time i've been getting weird draws
11:22 lostdream7: i like your deck idea, i think there are a lot of strong cards
11:22 Polyjak: i've got venser's sliver as a foil to GotG and sliver decks, should
i see them
11:22 lostdream7: i think it would be cool to add maybe the gorgon
11:22 Polyjak: oh yeah?
11:23 Polyjak: i think i'm only running 2 tresspasser
11:23 Polyjak: which i realize is probably a mistake
11:23 lostdream7: i guess thats not enough
11:23 Polyjak: and i may want the musher in the board
11:23 lostdream7: i think the musher in the board is perfect
11:23 lostdream7: thats a lock
11:23 Polyjak: basically
11:23 Polyjak: except if i see gasp
11:24 Polyjak: which {U}{B} and {W}{B} probably want
11:24 Polyjak: i just think, in almost every case, skred > LG
11:24 lostdream7: true
11:24 Polyjak: then again
11:24 Polyjak: i would get wrecked by the musher too
11:24 lostdream7: i t would be nice to run both if you could
11:25 lostdream7: you dropped the ravenous rats for pitkeeper right?
11:25 lostdream7: or are the rats still in there?
11:26 lostdream7: sorry, saw pitkeeper is in the list too
11:26 lostdream7: i just didnt see the rats
11:26 Polyjak: no rav
11:27 Polyjak: they werent doing much
11:27 Polyjak: i may want stinky main instead of shade

11:29 lostdream7: anyways, i hav eto go to bed
11:29 lostdream7: have a good night everyone
11:29 Polyjak: thanks for the game and insights sean
11:29 Polyjak: peace out
11:29 lostdream7: any time
I'll post my current build, and see what y'all think.
That last game was epic. Ruinedlaw was playing WUB control using Stinky, the Crier, Pillory, Plumes, Minister, First-wing, Martyr of Sands, and some counters. Not fun. There were some major sky wars. My deck really came together though, in a way that I've not yet experienced. For the first time in a long time, a deck I conceived on my own (mostly) converged into something resembling a unified strategy. I was excited. Card interactions sprang up that I hadn't even considered before. It was Magic as the game was meant to be experienced.
I like Karplusan Wolverine. He's probably good in a or deck, too. He helped me take down Ministers and Criers and even Stinky a couple times. Thoughtpicker Witch was indispensible in the late game for keeping nasty auras out of the enemy's hands. Gobhobbler and Pit Keeper didn't really come into play in the last game, which made me take Pit Keeper down to 3 copies to add one Trespasser, the card that won me the game by shadowing through the creature stalemate. (Well, Ruinedlaw had more creatures overall, though mine were bigger.)
I'm quite happy with my spell suite (though there is a decided hole where Yamabushi's Flame used to be). Strangling Soot is quite impressive, and did great things for me. It may prove to be useful to add Last Gasp if regenerators become a problem but I'm currently of the belief that Skred is better.
The sideboard is mostly metagame cards against the Nasty Nine (particularly dredge dudes, Ledgewalker, and GotG, and lifegain). I could certainly change it up though.
I considered taking my deck in a more discard-heavy route, or perhaps in a LD route, but the last game makes me want to keep it similar for a bit and test more.
Polyjak: Of the nasty nine, I think the only ones I'd worry about are Grim Harvest, Ledgewalker, and GotG. If you can deal with the graveyard, deal with flying, and deal with pro-mono color, you should be okay.
Also: Yay discard! Boo LD!
I like the upping the Pit Keepers. They belong in 4 of's. Worst case, they are an aggressive 2 drop. Best case, they are a cheap Gravedigger. I also like your choice of Chilling Shades over Demon Jester. DJ's are situational and CS's are always going to be good.
Sidenote: My all time favorite basic lands are the Guru lands, Unhinged lands, and the Kami block lands. I saw that there are supposed to be promotional baisc lands included in MWS. I added the Guru lands to that directory. So, now I get to see my fav lands there. I picked up the scans from Magiccards.info. You won't see it when we play, but, damn, its sweet.
-H
Edit: Another sidenote. I just launched MWS to find out that the updates for Time Spiral are in. The official set abbreviation for Time Spiral is "TSP." Thus, I had to change the directory name from TS to TSP. At least now we have a standard.
Polyjak: Of the nasty nine, I think the only ones I'd worry about are Grim Harvest, Ledgewalker, and GotG. If you can deal with the graveyard, deal with flying, and deal with pro-mono color, you should be okay.
Mostly-aggro and/or burn decks aren't big fans of lifegain cards, so that's why I'm no big fan of Blind Hunter or Fetters. But I do have a few maindeck ways to try avoiding those fools.
I'm hoping to play a bit more with it before Thursday. I want to test vs. Harvester and Goodstuff and Orzhov. Who know what will be coming out on Thursday? It'll be exciting! Everyone should play!
I was doing some playtesting with the Red/Blue deck entitled "something Fishy" earlier in this thread and it was working well against regular standard decks, I was almost able to win a game except I could deal with Minion of Leshrac, or whatever that guys name is that steals lands.
There will be two teams, composed of approximately equal numbers. Each team starts with a captain. The captains flip a coin. The coin toss winner picks first from the clan members. The captains alternate picks until all members have been chosen. The captain that lost the coin toss starts with the flag.
The format for the game will be agreed upon by the team captains. The format may be changed upon agreement by the teams. The starting format shall be Pauper Type II/Standard.
A team gains the flag when one of their members beats the Flagbearer in two out of three games. If the challenger wins, they are the new Flagbearer.
The Flagbearer may be challeneged at any time by any member of the opposing team by posting a challenge in the clan thread. The Flagbearer has two days from the posting to play the challenger or forfiet the flag to the challenger. The Flagbearer may pass the flag to a clan member who may defend the flag for their clan.
A Flagbearer may not be challenged by the same opponent twice in a row.
The Flagbearer may change decks between challeneges.
The Flagbearer must post the results in the clan thread. They should also include how many challenegers they've beaten.
They games may be played in MWS, MTGO, Apprentice, GCCG or in any format the two players can agree upon. If there is no agreement, the players shall use MWS.

Edit:
The teams so far. I won the coin toss. Eegag shall start with the flag.
Team Ledgewalkers: Haloscope, Polyjak, Grozothia, ActionMan3k, Akmage, Interpol, Master Beeble
Team Err: Eegag, Ruinedlaw, Redleg, Shloukas, ConFlux, Retropa, Macdeemac
Stats: Current Flagholder: Team Err's Eegag Most Successful Defenses: Ruinedlaw - 1, Eegag - 1 Longest Flag Held: Team Err - 2 day
I have succesfully defended the FLAG ONE TIME.... GO TEAM Err (eegag, ruinedlaw, redleg)
not as in Err.or... or play Err or, just Err.
so far so good. I played my Something fishy deck, adding Ephemoron instead of Drifter.
The first game was a loss and in truth I thought ActionMan3k would be stealing the flag.
The second game I sided in 4 Karplusan Wolverine and 3 Martyr of Ashes and I was able to pull the game with a great draw and a lot of burn.
The third game Action man was missing out on his Islands and I was able to capitalize and take the game....it was a close match and with a little luck I was able to pull it out.
BTW, while I was able to pull out this match, I am not so sure that Something fishy has a good game against Blue/Black madness. Adding the wolverine and martyr helped, but I am still not sure that is enough to give this deck a great chance against Blue/Black madness.
I was lucky enough to witness the kickoff match of the Princes of Pauper's very own Capture the Flag tournament. I will refer to this match as CF1.
ActionMan3k brought UB Madness on behalf of the Ledgewalkers. Ruinedlaw brought UR Something Fishy for Team Err.
The match ended with Ruinedlaw defending the flag for his team.
Ongoing scores can be viewed in the first post of this thread. Other important information can be seen at Haloscope's Rules post. There will be a section devoted to this tourney on the PoP site shortly. The link to the PoP site is available in my sig.
The sideboard plan was to use cremate if my opponent was heavy on flashback, dredge, or grim harvests. If my opponent was counter heavy and light on creatures I could convert into a counter deck myself. Other than that I just tossed in things that I thought might sometimes help.
I think U/B has the tools in this format, but I don't know if it's in the same tier as Orzhov. About your deck, specifically:
Gorgon Recluse didn't do well in my testing, and I removed all copies. However, it seemed pretty powerful in your match last night.
I don't know about Urborg Syphon-Mage. With Trespasser il-Vec and Looter il-Kor you have enough madness outlets, and the slow Syphon-Mage seems to go against your game plan.
You don't need Molder.
Right now, Last Gasp is more efficient than Assassinate. However, if Errant Ephemeron and the 5/5 for Suspend G become heavily played, Assassinate gets much better.
Tendrils of Corruption and Call to the Netherworld are unnecessary cards.
The first match of CF1 was very fun to watch, and I am eager to start participating. I am working on a couple of new decks for the Time Spiral Standard in anticipation of my first chance to capture the flag.
Jack, I still plan to join you on Thursday, hopefully with my U/B Madness deck completed on MTGO. I still need 4x Dark Withering, 3x Drifter il-Dal, and 2x Terramorphic Expanse.
Eegag: Urborg Syphon-Mage is in for reach/lifegain late game. You're right about Last Gasp generally being better than Assassinate in the pauper format. Molder was tossed in for lifegain and to make use of the golgari bounce since I don't own 2 dimir bounce. Tendrils of Corruption were also for lifegain, this deck doesn't block much and I figured it could take a beating in a long game.
Also, the Something Fishy decklist is incorrect since I know it runs remove souls and none are shown.
I'm also interested in the fate of UB Madness, and it will be the 3rd TS deck I build, right after I get Jakdos going well and then constructing Haloscope's WW build. I'm thinking that WW may end up being W/U unblockables (shadow creatures, the guys with white-fear, Gelid Shackles, and tapdown) with pump. But the WW is pretty good in its pure form, so we'll see what happens.
The "Something Fishy" build I posted is straight from earlier in the thread. I know Ruinedlaw has made changes to it. I'm sure the list I posted from Redleg is inaccurate, as well, but the general ideas are there.
Eegag, hope to see you Thursday!
ActionMan, thanks for posting your build and rationale behind card choices. This clan has only to gain from members doing such. And we all know that to grow as Magic players is to grow as citizens and as humans.
Haloscope, sorry I can not play tonight...as something came up, and I have to do some work...unfortunately.
I can play tomorrow morning before 10 pm est...aka 7pm est time for you, so I am guessing that probably wont work out, and tomorrow night is pdc tourney at 8:30 est when I get home, so if I am not playing I will play you.
Otherwise, i guess we can play friday?(not sure about the rules if it is two days after the post or including the day of the post?)
Otherwise I have a lot of faith in Eegag to defend the flag in my place tonight.
Eegag, if you can play Haloscope tonight, please do (I expect a victory of course).
I would say for 48 hours after the post. But, that's just me. However, I'm not exactly going to be hardass about it.
I don't think we should penalize Princes who are participating in PDC events. But if there's a wedding or funeral, if homework piles up, if there's some family event, or a big date... these things are inexcusable.
As I said, I don't think it should be a strict rule. As Captain Barbosa would say, they're more of what you'd call... guidelines.
ActionMan3K: Have you considered using Krovikan Mists? I was pondering a deck idea wherein you would use the three or four available illusions, then drop a Mist. It would, theoretically, be cheap and huge. Also, all of your efforts at using cheap illusions for defense would pay off with a finisher.
Edit: I just finished playing Eegag. He ripped me apart, 2-0. I played GoodStuff as I had recently posted. He played a Rock/Harvester variant. It was pretty powerful. Game 2 I was mana flooded, but he would have won anyhow. He ripped my side apart, swung for 10, and swung for 10 on the turn afterwards. I was clubbed like a baby seal.
I ran GoodStuff v4. His deck was a variant of something he had suggested for me at the beginning of this thread. He called it Rock Harvest. I think what he played tonight was:
What I didn't fully grasp until I saw this deck in action is that Scatter the Seeds is Last Gasp 5-8 when you have a Deathspore Thallid out. If you were to stack damage, Scatter could even take out an attacking 6/6. Backed up with a Grim Harvest, this was insane.
Team Err wins again! As Haloscope posted, I defended the flag against his challenge in ruinedlaw's place this evening. Once I saw that he was playing GoodStuff, I was rather nervous. However, my deck proved good enough to take GoodStuff out behind the shed and teach it a thing or two. Haloscope's guess on the decklist was just about spot on, except there was one more Scarwood Treefolk and one less Grim Harvest. I think the surprise factor played a definite role in my victory, and I likely won't play Rock Harvest again for a while in order to catch my next unsuspecting victim off-guard! (Though, Haloscope, feel free to use the deck - I know B/G Rock is your preferred archetype).
Sounds great. A cool way to get the clan playing. We can make it work using MTGO, MWS, or even GCCG. Most of us have at least two of those platforms, making our compatibility pretty good.

Prison Yard (Pauper Future Extended)
Shouldn't we make sure it would be possible on MTGO? At least for the initial incarnation...
I think that's a great idea. Passing flag to a teammate. Cool.
If you want to, sure. But, Magic Workstation is the one program we all have, I think.

Edit: Another sidenote. I just launched MWS to find out that the updates for Time Spiral are in. The official set abbreviation for Time Spiral is "TSP." Thus, I had to change the directory name from TS to TSP. At least now we have a standard.

It worked pretty well.

not as in Err.or... or play Err or, just Err.
so far so good.

I'm still planning on playing in SPDC this Thursday, and I'm hoping many of us will be up for the same. Registration is at 8:30pm Michigan time.

Jack, I still plan to join you on Thursday, hopefully with my U/B Madness deck completed on MTGO. I still need 4x Dark Withering, 3x Drifter il-Dal, and 2x Terramorphic Expanse.
Prison Yard (Pauper Future Extended)
Also, the Something Fishy decklist is incorrect since I know it runs remove souls and none are shown.
RuinedLaw, I challenge you! Match via MWS. I'll be on tonight. Catch me via IM?

Edit: I'm sure I'll have a deck by then.

Hope to see EVERYONE on Thursday!

I'll take on Eegag. No problem. Grr!

I don't think we should penalize Princes who are participating in PDC events. But if there's a wedding or funeral, if homework piles up, if there's some family event, or a big date... these things are inexcusable.
10 Swamp
10 Forest
4 Terramorphic Expanse
// Creatures
4 Deathspore Thallid
4 Thallid Shell-Dweller
4 Shambling Shell
4 Silhana Ledgewalker
3 Aquastrand Spider
2 Scarwood Treefolk
4 Search for Tomorrow
4 Last Gasp
4 Scatter the Seeds
3 Grim Harvest
Eegag, how close am I?
What I didn't fully grasp until I saw this deck in action is that Scatter the Seeds is Last Gasp 5-8 when you have a Deathspore Thallid out. If you were to stack damage, Scatter could even take out an attacking 6/6. Backed up with a Grim Harvest, this was insane.
