Dominic Lo, of Sydney, Australia, dominated the field of GP: Auckland, leading at the end of day one and day two. He was the number one seed in the top-eight, and rolled his way to victory.
actually yes... it is... Auckland is part of New Zealand... and New Zealand is the next door neighbor (and actually I think it is part of (but don't quote me on this)) to Australia.
New Zealand is not a part of Australia (unless you refer to the continent named Oceania as Australia, or if you mean that New Zealand and Australia both being a part of the British commonwealth, NZ is technically a part of Australia), and to say that it was a local champ is about the same, geographically speaking, as saying it is a local champ if a Swedish player wins in Spain.
Anyway, congrats to Dominic Lo, and to the other top 8-ers.

really? I thought it was for some reason? In any case, it was a local champ in the sense that the person was from that general part of the world... (as in it wasn't a person from Northern Asia, Europe, or the America's... or even Africa... if you know what I mean?)

I had expected more pros to turn up at NZ to get some easy (not easy, but easier no offense to the New Zealand-players) points. But the air fare was too high, I guess...
In the global perspective, it's local enough. If LSV gets to win a "home" GP in Atlanta, 3,000 miles from his actual home, I'm going to call this as close enough.

Didn't cheon and the ruel bros turn up? That's competition.
Saying local for aussies is not correct, neither aussies or kiwis think that they are "local" to each other.
Who started this "New Zealand is part of Aussie" thing? It gets on my nerves.
We had a decent turnout compared to the average Aussie GP, 251 wasn't bad at all.
The pros who were there were:
Shuuhei Nakamura (9th), Tomoharu Saito (86th), Paul Cheon (44th), Luis Scott-Vargas (12th), Olivier Ruel (5th), Gerry Thompson (10th), and Guillaume Wafo-Tapa (39th)
I ended up going 9-3-1 finishing 17th on breakers, which isn't bad at all considering I had no Byes.
This was definitely a good boost to NZ magic and a lot more people I know have said that they will at least be flying to the Aussie GP next year.
All in all a fantastic tournament and I just want to say that Jason Chung will be someone to keep an eye on for future events, this year finishing 3rd at Nats and 4th in the GP both times losing the semi's to the overall winner of the event.
New Zealand has not been a part of of New South Wales (a state of Australia) since 1840, and is about 2000km (1250 miles) away. No kiwis (NZers) would ever accept an Aussie as "local" (no offense to Aus, the rivalry ends at sports matches).
Congrats to Jason, I watched him through the finals at nats, and he is such a good player for someone so young, and a nice guy to boot. I predict we will hear a lot more of him in the future.

I second that. Jason piloted the QnT deck at nats like a champ. Also nice to see Nick Tung making another strong showing too. From the event coverage it sounded like the final between Nick and Dom was quite close.
I guess if the argument that NZ is close enough to Australia to call it local, than residents from Seattle and Detroit may as well call it a home win if they win in Canada
Grats to all who top 8'd. I heard nassif was there too?
I also heard from someone on the Friday that Chapin and Nassif were in town to make an appearance at the GP but neither of them were there. Of the well known pros, only the ones I listed before made an appearance... I'm about 99% sure on that anyway, there's a possibility I missed one. Check the final standings on the Wizards site to confirm.

Some of you may have been in shock since we invaded Canada and Mexico, but fear not, it was for a good cause. Now that we conrol North America, we produce an extra 5 armies a turn.^_^
I understand the hate drafting part, I was talking more about the fact that it was IN HIS MAINDECK (not his sideboard) without any way to actually cast it.

Hi simon! lol.
Dominic Lo was born in wellington(New Zealand) im pretty sure.
I came 4th losing to Dominic in semis =/
Olivier Ruel gave me a Naya charm (he picked sarkon vol over it =[ ) then rake claw and some mossotons straight after. I was like.. surely he cant be green. I was thinking he was Red something not green, like grixis or something.
Well, local or not, he's a fabulous chap. Well done that man! And - given how many 'Australian' actors are actually from NZ, we'll let this one pass :p.
God...I hate it when this happens...whether or not he was born in NZ or not, saying that NZ is part of Australia is like saying Canada is part of the USA. Besides, Here in Australia, we have an appropriate Human to Sheep ratio.

Haha! It was only a matter of time!
There is some coverage on the event (probably mostly on the pro players like LSV, GWT, etc) on Campbell Live tonight for all the New Zealand viewers.
The Cambell coverage was mostly a "there's this game that exists called Magic the Gathering" type story, with a short interview with LSV that went:
"You can actually make money from this!?!"
"Yes, I won $42,000 last month in Berlin".
And the sheep to people ratio in NZ is lower than it has been in a long time, due to more farmers switching to intensive dairy farming. [/random NZ fact]
(But yes, I can see sheep from my house)

Meh, I'll say that Canada is part of North America, and New Zealand is part of Australia.

You can say that all you want, it doesn't make it correct.
Canada = country / North America = continent
New Zealand = country / Australia = country
What you are looking for is Australasia or Oceania, to include different countries of the south pacific. But Americans are notoriously bad at world geography anyway.;)

You. because any definition that makes Australia a continent excludes nearby islands, since they're not actually part of the Australia landmass, whereas New Zealand + Australia is Australasia.
There are multiple definitions of continent. One of them is based on continental land masses; in that case, New Zealand is not connected, so it doesn't count.
The other is based on the underlying plate tectonics; New Zealand is actually on a different continental plate.
There is NO definition of continent that has a continent called Australia that includes New Zealand.
Australasia is not even a continent, but it IS a grouping that includes both. Note the spelling.
You should read them.

Correct me if I'm missing something but how was Ruel ever planning on casting Fire-Field Ogre? There's no blue producing sources in his deck.
If you read the coverage, it was a hate draft.

Sometimes, it pays to read the links on wikipedia.
Australia is both a Country, and a Continent, but New Zealand is neither part of the country of Australia, OR the continent of Australia.
