for the record my original comment involved saying that if you did a certain obnoxious thing in edh youd be a cockwad. if i were flaming someone id totally understand the infraction and certainly wouldnt argue it. my point is that it seems a bit awkward giving out a censorship dodge infraction when the user would gladly take the censorship if the word was bad enough.
I'd like to point out that the use of the word **** to refer to genitals is inappropriate and is likely to be moderated. I'd venture to guess that is the root of this particular case.
im pretty sure the f word is a lot worse than what i said. i am sorry for not getting the vernacular right but i feel innapropriate language is about the same as dodging the censor when the word would always be considered offensive. if that word is always innapropriate the censor should catch it. i was probably using that word in one of the least offensive way you could while still actually using it in context.
I think it is somewhat unreasonable to expect us to keep tabs on all the unusual ways people insult one another.
I, for one, had not heard the term 'cockwad' before today. It's obviously derogatory, but it isn't anything I would have thought of when considering insults for a person.
i understand now not to use the word but i still feel when the censor doesnt catch something a warning should be issued when it is clear the user isnt trying to be rude to someone else, is this not a reasonable solution?
This all comes back to moderator discretion. The moderator felt it was the appropriate action for them to take, you obviously disagree.
Did you contest the infraction at the time?

I was a little too narrow with this.
It's more along the lines of referring to genitals is not usually appropriate in most areas of this site.
I'm sure that it would be acceptable (if a little crass) to use slang terms when discussing it in the appropriate context (like in a thread about circumcision).
Man, I'm on a roll with the just-barely-toeing-the-line-of-appropriate-serious-plus-humor-posts.
So what if I were to refer to someone as a *** in a derogatory way? Not to be slang for homosexual, but in the other context it is meant, though still as a casual insult. Would that be to the effect of calling them a *****, but in the sense of referring to them as a female dog? Or even just flat out calling them a dog?
Mind you, I can't remember the last time I referred to someone as such (***, not *****, though probably about 7 years ago), but just for the reference of other users who feel the need to do such?

Well, I understand that there's some reclamation of the word, akin to the 'N-word' and other [letter]-words.
Furthermore, the word is for cigarette in the English language.
Would that be to the effect of calling them a *****, but in the sense of referring to them as a female dog? Or even just flat out calling them a dog?
Can't we simply have a little more class and refrain from calling others on the boards and others not on the boards things?
In fact, there is a very relevant (to MTG) use of Retard: Talking about the French version of the card Delay
Dang. You Sarnath'd me.
The word retard and variations are used a lot in English too, particularly in contexts such as, say, physics or when your mates ask you why you're late to the matinée. Its pronunciation is /ri-tard/, not /ree-tard/.
I support not having a filter more than I do support having a filter, but I also support cracking down hard on those that transgress some sort of line, which I suppose would be rather discretionary and, well, inconsistent.
See, my opinion on the subject is that we are spoiled here with the censor, as I came from a forum with no censor and with much stricter offensive language guidelines (to put things in context, I was given a permaban, that was later reversed, for saying ' "black people are dumb" is an opinion. It is false, however it is still an opinion' in a thread when someone argued that opinions could be factual).
The censor is a wonderful thing, and although I've never posted a censorable (at least not until recently :?) word, I like having the safety net.
I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?
I hate this kind of censoring. On MTGO I cannot even have a normal conversation because normal verbs are filtered out in my native language. For instance I cannot say: "You can do this", because "can" is censored.
If someone wants to say something nasty, they can circumvent the filters and say it anyway. For the normal users these filters are only annoying.
Oh, that's devo'd.
I noticed that on Gatherer comments are censored to such an extent that some cards cannot be linked to or common words are filtered because they contain, for example, "ass".
Wait, what is your native language? I suppose you could resort to using English.

@pizzap
There is a history of social oppression behind the establishment as unacceptable for many of the "vulgar" words of English, so it actually isn't a random phenomena. It also a discussion better held elsewhere (Debate, NSFW Debate, or WCT depending on the phrasing of the topic).
What you need to understand is that these words carry heavy social meaning in a way that is often hostile, but is also considered very inappropriate for those under the age of majority in English speaking countries. While a very large portion of our userbase is mature enough to handle these words, the fact that many would prefer not to anyway, combined with the large portion of our users that are still quite young, makes it a losing proposition to remove censor restrictions.
The censor acts as a failsafe for users, if they would say something offensive, hopefully it will be censored and both the user and staff are saved the hassle of an infraction. Is it perfect? Of course not. However it is something that allows us to include as many people in discussions here as we can.

Your infraction wasn't for evading the censor, it was for inappropriate language. Evading the censor means using your own special characters to make censored words appear uncensored. That's not what you did:
You could have avoided this infraction by using a different, non-offensive word in place of cockwad.
I was curious if words like fuggin' or friggen fall under evading the sensor, or only things using number/alternative letter combinations to represent letters of the original?
It's my understanding that "to frick" is to make a loud annoying scraping noise; it comes from horsing, I believe, where they used to use a painful-looking brush with a whipping motion to get dirt and bugs off a horses hide that made a nails-on-chalkboard noise that was unpleasant for observers (people involved in hand shuffling could be said to be "fricking"). Thus, while it's often used as a stand-in for other words that begin with F, it simply (as an adjective) means "really annoying to observe."
I was curious if words like fuggin' or friggen fall under evading the sensor, or only things using number/alternative letter combinations to represent letters of the original?
I'm wary of making any kind of blanket statements that take away moderator discretion, but in general we only consider it evading the censor if it's a modification of a censored word that is obviously designed to prevent the censor from catching the word. Alternative words generally don't fall into this category.
The other thing about this is, we don't want a ridiculously overbearing censor for reasons already aforementioned - I personally thought it was particularly STUPID that on Combat Arms any use of "nip" was censored, so any time we wanted to type "sniper" it would come out as "s***er" and everyone was like "LOL HE SAID ****" and we could not properly convey that we wanted our comrades to kill the goddamn sniper - and of course, all of this was completely circumvented when they integrated voicechat anyway.

Asking people to remove quotes in their signatures is tyranny! If I can't say something just because someone's feelings are hurt then no one would ever be able to say anything! Political correctness is stupid.

It's quite offensive to some people, especially those who are very close to / related to mentally handicapped individuals. With all due respect, I don't think working in an institution necessarily results in the same level of sensitivity to the word as having a personal relationship with a person.
To sort of bridge this topic to something I'm curious about, and to avoid making a new topic:
Why do those specific words earn exemptions from the censor based on context. The inappropriateness of most words considered swears is purely one made by societal connotation. the F word is no worse than the phrase "sexual intercourse", (when used in context) aside from the arbitrary taboo society has developed. So if there are contexts where I can say sexual intercourse or even rape appropriately, why is the f word disallowed? If I can say feces in a contextually relevant and reasonable way, why should the obvious parallel be censored?
