While these cards are very cheap, picking up 30 of each basic snow-covered land type is looking to break my bank. I haven't found any sets on ebay recently either. What's the best way to nab a couple hundred snow-covered lands without paying 50 cents each?

Best bet is to look around compolation online store sites like tcgplayer or findmagiccards and see who has what. You likely wont be able to get everything you want from one source, but you may be able to get everything at a more reasonable price to you if you look at using 2-3 online stores to get what you need. Also, in some cases, the Ice Age ones are actually cheaper :).
I looked on ebay and found 2 auctions ending within the week that are for 50+ snow covered lands, your best bet would probably be to check there or other auction sites frequently and bid a set amount per land (like say 0.25 per land) and just wait. Eventually you can win some for cheap.
Often your LGS will have a bunch of snow-covered lands in the draft land box. Ask the people running the store if you can pick them up on the cheap, or they might even just give them to you.

Or better, offer to do a trade of basic lands you do not care about at 2x rate (give two basics for each snow covered land).

I second this. I've done it myself. Any cardshop common boxes will do. Be prepared to want to beat your head off the floor digging through 100000 lands though.
