Hi there. With the recent price increase of Stone Forge mystics, Im beginning to wonder if it would be a good idea to sell or trade these off soon, before we get too close to them rotating out of standard, or if they would be worth hanging onto past rotation.
Theyre seeing play in most formats, and will probably forever be a stable in white equipment decks in EDH. Also, Im considering the fact that this is a card that will only become better with time, as new equipment cards see print.
Do you think they will drop a lot in price come rotation and is it wise to trade them off now?
I'm hanging onto mine, personally. I typically sell cards off before they rotate, but I just play my SFMs too much to let them go. And, as you said, they're super playable in Legacy/EDH, and will likely only get better with time.
Everything drops in rotation. It will dip down around october, go up slightly during Extended PTQ runs, then dip down again. It's worth hanging on to them, but it may be useful to sell them now then pick them back up cheaper when they're rotating if you want the most out of them.
It will definitely remain an eternal staple, so if you play those formats and don't need the money there's no reason to really worry much about it. I got 2 of my mystics when they were still a third of their current price so even if they drop below $10 it doesn't matter, i'll pick up two more when they hit bottom after rotating, couple extras beyond that for extended then just call it a day.
Definitely flip them prior to rotation if you can, as they are going to drop - but if you play Legacy, you should also pick them back up as soon as they get cheap again. I have 6 total and am holding on 3 and actively flipping the others.
However, I would say DO NOT GET RID OF FOIL STONEFORGE. Due to Legacy/EDH demand for pimp foils this thing will likely be a 50 dollar card in 3 years. I can't see Stoneforge ever becoming totally worthless in any format, so the demand for foils will always be high.
Of course, there is a strong chance that Stoneforge will rise again soon once Sword of War and Peace comes out to complete the cycle, before the post-rotation drop. Sigh...

Personally, I think the price of Stoneforge will reach its highest around a month or two after the release of New Phyrexia, as long as Sword of War and Peace is comparable to the other four Swords. If decks like Caw-Blade that take advantage of Stoneforge are still popular at that point, I could see the price being around $30, possibly higher.
After New Phyrexia, I'm guessing that there won't be any must-have equipments printed in M12, so I don't see Stoneforge rising much with that release (Umezawa's Jitte or a card comparable to it would raise it more, but I don't think that would get printed). After that, the standard rotation will happen, and Stoneforge will start dropping in price for the month prior, and when it does rotate out, I'd assume it'll stay at $12-$15ish until Legacy gets a new way of abusing it.
I'd be tentative for long-term investment on SFM. The checklist I use for it is:
Card Tutor (CHECK)
Tutor to Hand (CHECK)
Cheat Cards into Play (CHECK)
Tutor with a Body (CHECK)
Mana Efficient (CHECK)
Black, Blue, Red, Colorless (Nope)
Means I'd put it on the long-term legacy ban "watch list"
Wizards has a habit right now of not banning Standard Legal cards (where art thou, Yawgmoth's Will), but I could see this and Candlebra being in the next round of Legacy bannings (post rotation).

I don't see SFM becoming degenerate in Legacy. Its tutor effect isn't repeatable like SotF (let alone repeatable multiple times per turn for just one mana), and equip costs still need to be paid after the equipment hits the board. Aside from that, she's easy to kill, barring support from the likes of Mother of Runes.
SFM is one of my favorite cards, and I see it being viable, but not broken, in Legacy, for a long time to come. I just have no desire whatsoever to unload mine.

I agree completely, however I do have it on my watch list. I don't however see it even being really considered until Wizards finishes up with the Swords / Equipment / Mirrodin re-do that they're currently themed into. Putting all this RnD and production time into equipment and then banning cards that work well with them does seem counter-productive until something better comes along
Reprints the one card that people point to when saying that art objectifies women.
Well done Wizards.
Liliana does not objectify women in any way at all. We have gotten to a point in our society that every single picture of a women must be objectifying a women in some negative way......blah blah blah.. That is not the case. (((Sarcasm)))Picture of a girl drinking a milk shake, must be sex related and putting women down, picture of girl sitting on a beach, picture of a girl driving a car, picture of a girl on the moon at a new space station.)))
You have a picture of an attractive strong power women who girls dress up as for anime conventions. What more do you want? The picture is fine, happy to see a reprint. Sick of of seeing people claim that everything in existence must be putting women down. Then all I have to do is replace the word "women" with anything else to get the same mentality; fish, cats, arabs, blacks, jews, men, environment, whites, chinese, old people, etc. It doesn't matter what word I put in. Stop sucking life out of everything man. That artwork of her is awesome. Stop putting stuff down man. Just stop. If the picture was really as negative as you claim she would totally nude, in a kitchen, making sandwiches and giving blow jobs. Her abilities would be horrible as well. +1 do nothing -2 do nothing -6 do nothing. Instead liliana of the veil is an amazing planeswalker comparable to jace, the mind sculpter with great art to appreciate.
My suggestion listen to some comedy radio for a while, pandora is free, youtube is free there is something out there for you. ***** go make fun of somebody. The whole world is so serious and campaigning for some cause, or someones rights, everything is a hate crime, racist, sexist. blah blah blah.
"O no mcdonalds must be slandering a hate crime against skinny people every time they make a big mac." hahaha jeeze You're just someone perpetuating another groups negative perspective that they've made you believe is correct. Look at the picture for a hour and tell me what's wrong with it? I don't see anything.
I have heard vague rumors of a moustache-dispensing vending machine in a distant laundromat, across the street from a tattoo parlor. However, this information is shaky, and time is of the essence.
Just wondering, is it worth picking them up now or within the next few weeks? Or should I just forget about them?
I'm not sure what waiting a few weeks is going to do for you. If anything the Sword of War and Peace will be good and it will only cause SFM to go up in the near future.
Just to throw a data point out there, I've had ppl asking about these some more recently ^^ Traded away about 8 these last couple of weeks, still have about 3 playsets left, might just hold the rest like Vik

Cool. What else is hot?
But I've only gone through 100 or so in the past week, so there's another useful data point.

So do you think it's going to go up post-NPH or will it stay stable in the 17-18 range then dip?

The reason why I'm having to wait a week or two is because I don't have the money at the moment; I need to sell some cards online, then ship em out (a little more complicated since I've been stuck here on campus :(). And that's assuming that I get the listings up and sold as soon as possible.
I have a little cash in person and would much rather buy/trade for them in person, but no one at my local has any for trade. You have a point about the new sword. Makes me queasy thinking that they'll only get pricier (and then by summer there's gonna be a storm of people trying to get rid of everything, which means competing sellers...god...such a pain to try and break even).

Like pretty much EVERY OTHER CARD IN THE HISTORY OF STANDARD, it will drop in price after it rotates this fall. If you don't have them and aren't trying to play Standard, just wait.
Unload non-foils, keep foils. Foils will hold value you the 100 card casual people and legacy, crowd, nonfoils will drop with rotation

So, on average, 1 JtMS every 2.222 boxes or 1 Bird of Paradise every 3.694 boxes. Yeah, I'll take my odds with Mythics, they are easier to get than old rares.

Won't get the banhammer, but I'd unload them before end of next month when everyone else will be getting rid of standard staples before rotation. It will take a drop, even if it continues to see play in Extended.
Going against the general consensus here, I'm looking to acquire these. If you're looking to unload, I'm interested.
I'd have to agree with Dresden on this one. If you're worried about slight drops in price and maxing out your short term gains, then sure--get rid of them.
But do any of you really think we've seen the last of any groundbreaking equipment cards that will be introduced into the game? And wouldn't it be logical to assume that as long as there is equipment in the game of Magic, there will be people who will be interested in cheating that equipment into play, regardless of their levels of competition? I feel like whether or not you miss out on making a few extra bucks on the card right now, it will always be tradeable and will be of value to have around.
i predict that its going to be similar to kotr or noble hierarch in that it will drop but then go back to where it was and eventually get more expensive. its really cheap, tutors and vials equipment, a unique ability outside of stonehewer giant which costs way more

This.
I wouldn't expect them to 'tank' ever, basically. This card will always be short-list material when it comes to building any deck that cares about equipment. Think Argothian Enchantress. It's by far the best ("spike-iest") enchantress they've ever printed, kinda like this guy for equipments.
Doubful she'd ever get reprinted either.
And they're going to be printing more equipments that will only get better with this guy.
Personally, I'd hang on to them unless you're absolutely itching to sell or you have 100% certainty you'll never build another equipment-centric deck in the future.
No way in hell this card will get banned. That's just silly. edit: Ok, I see the criteria above..perhaps. Still doesn't feel right to me.

Agreed.
I collect Knowledge Pools!
I am just curious as to the average value you picked them up for as I have a couple SFMs and am not 100% aware of what they actually are valued at.
