Maro's column today got me thinking. Each color except green has it's own iconic creature type. White has Angels, blue has recently gotten the Sphinx as its iconic creature type, black apparently now has Demon instead of Vampire, and red of course has Dragon. But what does green have?
The most obvious one is Wurm, but there are a lot of common and uncommon Wurms as well so it's not exactly the most impressive rare green creature type out there. We have cards like Spined Wurm and Craw Wurm at common, but at the same time we also have Plated Slagwurm and the like at rare.
Another choice is Elemental, such as Force of Nature of Verdant Force, which are impressive, big, iconic green creatures. But the problem is that the Elemental creature type is spread throughout all the other colors and isn't very iconic as a green-only creature type.
I was also thinking about Hydras, which seem to have been shifted from red to green in the most recent sets.
What do you think? Are there any other big, impressive creature types that could serve as green's iconic race? Which one would fit green's philosophy and themes the best?
Green has 4 creature types almost every set seem to have:
Elves (there's too much of them to become iconic, rare, mythic beings.)
Beasts (same problem)
Insects or saprolings (or squirrels, but they're just too little and/or cute to be iconic)
Treefolks or plants (but they're wood - wood isn't iconic!)
When reviewing some of the older sets, here are some card that "stuck out to me" in their respective set:
Shards of Alara: Godsire (Beast) and Spearbreaker Behemoth (Beast)
Conflux: Thornling (Elemental shapeshifter) and MEglonoth (Beast)
Alara Reborn: Lord of Extinction (elemental) and spellbreaker behemoth (Beast)
Lorwyn: vigor (elemental) and cloudtresher (elemental)
Morningtide: Chameleon colossus (shapeshifter) and unstoppble ash (treefolk warrior)
shadowmoor: mossbridge troll (troll) and deus of calamity (spirit avatar)
eventide: regalforce (elemental) and deity of scars (spirit avatar)
zendikar: rampaging baloth (beast) and scute mob (insect)
So in the end, beasts and elementals ARE green's way of saying "KAPOW, in your face countermage"
Does each color have to have a single "flagship" creature type? I think it's fine that it's not so clear-cut. They should fluctuate from set to set, as well.

Well, if you read MaRo's article today, it is clearly states that some creature types are iconic and some are characteristic. If we go by MaRo's example, Elves and Beasts and Insects and Treefolk would definitely be classified as characteristic creatures types for green, since they are quite common and numerous.
I think this paragraph from the article illustrates the point pretty well:
Quote from MaRo »
Red's iconic creature is the dragon. Yes, there aren't many of them but the ones that do exist are some of the most exciting examples of what red is capable of. Red's characteristic creature is the goblin. No creature is more prevalent in red than the goblin. It has become red's staple race.
So, the issue here is that green doesn't really have any defined "iconic" creature type like the other colors. It has a lot of characteristic types, like Elves and Beasts and Treefolk, but it doesn't have any iconic creatures that are big and impressive and splashy, like Angels are for white or Dragons are for red.
Does each color have to have a single "flagship" creature type? I think it's fine that it's not so clear-cut. They should fluctuate from set to set, as well.
Maybe not, but the point I am trying to make is that green seems to be the only color without a "flagship" creature type. Since each other color does have a big, iconic creature type that everybody loves, I find it a big strange that green doesn't have any of the same caliber.
Athani:
Hydras are a good candidate, I think. The only problem with them is that they have the grandfathered +1/+1 counter text, which limits what you can do with them.
Kuberr: I say that Beasts (and Elementals) are among the characteristic races for green.
Scuirimancer: Good point. Instead of "hey look at my [insert large creature type here]!" Green gets to say "And now my army of gigantic dudes smashes your face." It works, but I do think there should be an iconic race.
I was mulling this over last week and came to the conclusion that I really wish Hydras could be the new Green icon. They have the issue with +1/+1 counters, but there are 50 billion sleek cards that can be made to use those. The real strokes against it are that the original hydra was red, and some of the green options were potted plants. Another issue against them is that many have a very low CMC. This is only troubling because if you compare the mana cost for Protean Hydra and Bogardan Hellkite, which looks more impressive?
Recent pluses for the tribe: Protean Hydra, Feral Hydra.
Angel's have more or less per definition flying same with Sphinx and even non-flying dragons are rare. I can't see a problem with the fact that Hydra is often build around something with growing
Demons as well. All of the "Icon Races" have flying. This is ok.
My point really was (and it was unclear) that +1/+1 counter text takes up a lot of space, so your card is going to be a one-trick hydra, doing something cool with +1/+1 counter and not that much else.
Bryan: Read the article in question. MaRo was talking about the difference between Iconic and Characteristic races. In summary, Iconic races show off what a color can do, and are very splashy. Characteristic races are less impressive, but they are everywhere within the color.

I think Hydras are a good route to go, and it's obviously what wotc is trying for (protean hydra) and it is very evocative of green. Growing, resilient, etc.
I think we can make hydras without being forced to make them 0/0s with +1/+1 counters and stuff, though. There are other ways to represent a multi-headed beast, I think.
-The Butcher Orgg ability feels hydra-ish to me...look at all those heads! Each one is biting someone different!
-We could also have creatures that grow a la Molten Hydra (but bigger) while not necessarily being 0/0 creatures for XG. (So we can achieve the big flashy mana costs)
-We could also have hydra-like drawbacks, say creatures that get withered by damage?
A straight 7/7 for :4mana::symg::symg::symg: with the butcher orgg ability would be sufficiently powerful/flashy enough to be iconic; is the ability alone enough to make it truly hydra-esque?
What about:
Titanic Hydra :3mana::symg::symg::symg:
Creature - Hydra
7/7
You may divide Titanic Hydra's combat damage as you choose among defending player and/or any number of creatures he or she controls.
Sources deal damage to Titanic Hydra as though they had Wither. [could be reworded for core-set functionality]
:1mana::symg::symg:: Put a +1/+1 counter on Titanic Hydra.
just a thought. I'd like to make Hydras work as the iconic green creature.
Green doesn't need an iconic big creature type because the whole point of the color is the many fledged varieties of life itself.
I agree with you on your second point. However, there are certain advantages to having an iconic creature type to act as the flagship of a color. I think it would be good to have one, but as you noted it isn't needed.

Green doesn't need an iconic big creature type because the whole point of the color is the many fledged varieties of life itself.
Perhaps, but that is also an easy "out" of the question that some of us (including wotc I think) are trying to solve. Maybe that isn't the whole point of the color. Or maybe there is a creature that can stay true to that point, while still being somewhat of a flagship. Hydras do seem to represent variety (just look at all those heads!), right?
Nah, hydras don't really ring flora and nature to me. Elementals do.
Hydras could never be iconic because they don't ooze the flavor in real life.
But I don't think the iconic creature type needs to perfectly evoke all that a color (and just one color) is about. That would rule out dragons, certainly. Elementals are waaayyy too open to interpretation to be a green-based iconic creature, unfortunately.
If your opinion is that Hydra doesn't work, that's fine. I think hydras do fit nature to me, and I've always found them very flavorful. Throughout fantasy I've always liked hydras, but that is just me. I've never been a huge fan of angels, but that's just me too.
Haha, true, but in this case I think it's safe to assume that there will be a green "iconic" creature, whether we want/accept it or not. Maybe here we can try and work that out, and find one that is the best fit. Or we can give up.
But I don't think the iconic creature type needs to perfectly evoke all that a color (and just one color) is about. That would rule out dragons, certainly.
How come? Please do bear in mind that the idea of smartz dragon is at best secondary.
All the other colors' iconic creatures generally have flying. Because green can't have flying creatures, this MUST mean green can't have an iconic creature type.

Back in the day, cards like Force of Nature and Gaea's Liege were the iconic green creatures. They were not elementals at the time, but were lumped in later. Maybe they should have their own creature type?
I suppose you could also upgrade Wurms to iconic rare status like they did with Angels. (Although there's an uncommon Angel in Zendikar, now...)
I suppose you could also upgrade Wurms to iconic rare status like they did with Angels. (Although there's an uncommon Angel in Zendikar, now...)
There've been common angels in the past too. Also dragons.
Treefolk anyone?
I'd say this is about right - they could easily start beefing them up to iconic.
All the other colors' iconic creatures generally have flying. Because green can't have flying creatures, this MUST mean green can't have an iconic creature type.
All Ninja Turtles' names end with O, except Raphael's. That means he is not really a Ninja Turtle.
It's understandable blue control players would be shocked and in denial at the notion of this card, since their decks have been dominating multiple formats for an eternity yet they've curiously never once had to deal with any counter-hosers that weren't ineffectual, narrow CRAP.
Iconic Magic Creature
1. You show up only a few times per set (and many times only once).
2. You are almost exclusively rare or mythic rare.
3. You show up on splashy cards.
Characteristic Magic Creature
1. You show up many times per set.
2. You show up in all rarities, especially at common.
3. You appear on many mundane, basic cards (such as vanilla and French vanilla creatures—R&D-speak for creatures with no rules text or just simple creature keyword abilities.)
The closest green has to an iconic type is Wurm, followed closely by Treefolk. Wurms have two of the qualities of an iconic type (1 and 3) and two of the qualities of a characteristic type (2 and 3), but I think the first quality is the most important for both categories. Wurms only appear once or twice per set, often as common or uncommon cards, but they do appear in just about every set. When Treefolk are not making a tribal appearance, they are few and far between.
The biggest problem with Wurms is their tendency to appear as commons. However, green is supposed to be the color of big fat creatures, which means that it needs big fat creatures at all rarities. It is perfectly fine for the color of big fat creatures to get its closest thing to an iconic creature type spread among lower rarities and only occasionally as flashy rares like Panglacial Wurm.
The problem with Elemental is the same problem with Beast: There are too many of them and too many in other colors.
Zendikar has two blue Elementals, four red Elementals, and one green Elemental. M10 has one blue Elemental, four red Elementals, and one green Elemental. Shards of Alara block had one blue Elemental, two black Elementals, four red Elementals, two green Elementals, and a five color, a black red, and a black green Elemental.
Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block had a couple dozen Elementals in each color, but it is worth pointing out that the primary color for Elementals in Lorwyn is red.
I would agree with the Wurm, for green icon. It exemplifies what green stands for: Fatties.
Treefolk are the same category of Elves. They are a race that has seen a lot of action, but individually they are rarely impressive. They need numbers. Icons should be a serious threat all by themselves, which any of the gigantic Wurms can easily accomplish.
How come? Please do bear in mind that the idea of smartz dragon is at best secondary.
I don't see any particularly strong connection between Dragons and Passion, or Dragons and Recklessness. I see strong connections between Dragons and Ambition and Dragons and Selfishness, which are both black traits. I'm not saying that this rules out Dragons as red's iconic creature - I'm just saying that the fit between "iconic creature" and "color" cannot be perfect. Mainly because the colors were not designed around these creatures.
My problem with treefolk is that...they're lame. How can we expect someone to be excited about opening a big rare TREEFOLK as an iconic creature? No amount of beefing up or making them tournament-caliber can make up for the fact it's still a tree. (And please don't bring up individual "cool treefolks" in the past as evidence that what I'm saying isn't true - of course some treefolk are cool, that isn't my point.)
What I'm really getting at is that it would be much, MUCH easier to tweak Hydras to make them feel more green than it would be to tweak Treefolk to make them feel more iconic.
Elementals: I love elementals, but restricting them to green-icon generally rules out elementals of other colors. Which is a huge problem, because the common fantasy "elements" are earth, fire, water, and air.
Back in the day, cards like Force of Nature and Gaea's Liege were the iconic green creatures. They were not elementals at the time, but were lumped in later. Maybe they should have their own creature type?
I like this idea. Is there another word we can use instead of elemental?
Wurms: I suppose. I guess my concern with wurms is that they have the opposite problem that hydras do - while hydras have certain distinguishing characteristics that could pigeonhole their design space, there is nothing special or distinct about wurms. They are just big mouths with snaky bodies. Any wurm could just as easily be a beast.
What about hydras and wurms as co-Icons? Since we're all talking about green, the color that "is its own iconic creature" (to quote Felecorr), there could be room for two (very similar) large scaly beasts to occupy the top spot.
As for Iconic creatures for green, I think it could go to Hydras, although I'd prefer Dinosaurs.
Hydras need not all have +1/+1 counter abilities, but they should be able to grow.
Xylohydra 4GG
Creature - Hydra
Trample
Xylohydra's power and toughness are each equal to the number of forests you control.
At the beginning of each end step, if Xylohydra was dealt damage this turn, you may search your library for up to X forest cards and put them onto the battlefield tapped, where X is the amount of damage dealt to Xylohydra this turn.
*/*
But really, the big green Icon should be Dinosaur.
Cyranosaurus 5GG
Creature - Dinosaur
Tapped creatures can block Cyranosaurus as though they weren't tapped.
Prevent half the damage that would be dealt to Cyranosaurus by tapped creatures, rounded up.
Whenever Cyranosaurus attacks, any number of target creatures defending player controls block it this turn if able.
7/7
Dinosaurs can attack creatures directly, tapped or not. Muahahaha~!
Scarodactyl 3GG
Creature - Dinosaur
Flying
Tapped creatures can block Scarodactyl as though they weren't tapped.
Whenever Scarodactyl attacks, any number of target creatures block it this turn if able. Those creatures gain reach until end of turn.
Whenever Scarodactyl becomes blocked by a creature with flying, it gains deathtouch until end of turn.
4/4
Spikosaurus 3GGG
Creature - Dinosaur
Tapped creatures can block Spikosaurus as though they weren't tapped.
Whenever Spikosaurus attacks, any number of target creatures block it this turn if able.
Whenever Spikosaurus becomes blocked, it deals damage equal to its power to defending player.
Whenever Spikosaurus becomes the target of a spell or ability an opponent controls, it deals damage equal to its power to that player.
6/6
Something in here can be keyworded. Like, Hunting (When it attacks, you may have any number of target creatures controls block it this turn if able. Tapped creatures can block this creature as though they were untapped.)
