Things I need to work on:
Thinner layers (got any tips on making paint thinner but making it still stick to the card?)
matching acrylic colors
Applying finish in the end... some of it got a bit splotchy I think I was spraying too close to the card or something.
criticisms / tips welcome i'm trying to get better at this it's very fun
thinner layers- add a bit of water, but not too much. just have to experiment. it's ok to do several thin layers rather than one or two thick ones. blend the colors from the border over the original card so there is nice transition. It's ok to paint over the backgrounds on cards. I use paint made for miniatures as you can get a lot of variety in colors. I have big jars of black and white from dickblick.com and the other must have colors are burnt sierra and burnt umber. miniaturemarket.com has a lot of good paints and ship for free on orders $75+.
to clean up the textboxes, put a bit of water on your brush and wipe it over the areas you want paint removed from; then either use your fingernail or something small like a toothpick (I use a fine detailed sculpting tool that resembles a small knife) to easily remove the paint. I found that by getting dried paint wet it can be removed quite easily; even multiple thick layers over an entire card can be removed this way.
when you spray, do it quickly over the card and from about a 6-8 inches away. it's ok to do a couple of thin layers if you wish. i usually just do one thin layer and it seems to be adaquet.
Pretty damn good for a fist try! The figure looks energized, I can tell what you were going for - energy swirling around her, she's looking over her shoulder, it's all there. As you pointed out, it's a learning curve, and your next one will be better :D. Can't wait to see what else you come up with.
@ Froze: That Scion is incredible!
@ Frenadol: Yeah, it might have been a little ambitious for a first attempt, but it still looks pretty darn good! I have to agree with 'sepia when I say it looks like she's powering up for a face-melting attack. I like! (Also: BRS!)
@ Klug: . . . . Wow. Your comic alters continue to stun and amaze! And Vader is awesome!
Here's a recent one I snuck in between projects and studying for finals. Decided to give a beat-up old favourite a new lease on life.
Thanks for all the feedback! I'll keep that in mind.
Those are both fantastic! Are those feathers floating down around the sword?
I could bet those are soldiers holding their swords and sitting on the plumes while being surrounded by a sort of bubble, falling onto the battlefield in a such a birth-like style.
Very, very flavorful and amazing tinny details, Ondal!!!
This showed up in my mail box earlier this week and I thought I'd share it in case you guys haven't seen it yet.

It looks like the original was done with brush tools in either Photoshop or Painter and then printed onto your card. So the answer is: Inkjet in paper.
OH! sorry this altered art thing is kinda new to me. Its done with pencil.

If you look at the original that someone else did, you will see in the airbrushed looking areas of the background that the image was at least finished in one of those two programs. It may have started as a drawing, but it ended digitally. And then the card you are holding is a print off onto card stock, not a pencil drawing itself.
I really like the work you have been doing lately and it makes me wish I had a lot more time to paint... but work and kids have me taking migraine medicine and gaining weight faster than I'd like ;).
I have noticed in a ton of portraits that the artist stretches the face by about 15% and it always happens in the nose. My theory is that people treat the face as a collection of eyes, a nose, and a mouth, but it's really the structure of the forehead, cheeks, and jaw. Now, I don't know what she looks like obviously, but I did grab the top of the image and pull it down to compensate for that %15 just to see. Does that proportion feel better?
you'r right Galspanic, but a portrait is something really hard, and need years of practice to do a good work, i'm still practicing now ^^
i'm not saying she looks more hat your 15% less vision but in fact the nose i painted is longer by 1 or 2 mm ( but she still have a long nose )... this is the result of using a wide pc screen
Oh trust me, I know that doing portraits well takes years of work, but that nose length has been something that I see again and again - so I point it out when I see it. Part of it is a suggestion to the artists and part of it is "it's so weird that this happens all over the world again and again and again"

Thanks man! I've had the idea lingering in my mind forever. Completing my Lyzolda commander deck finally inspired me to finish it.
Expect more anime alterations to come.
I always thought that Quinton Hoover's old stuff with the contour lines was his best work and then he stopped doing that. It's nice to see that approach on some of the newer cards!
