I'm working on this card and am coming in on that "close, but needs tweaking" stage. Any help would be appreciated since my vision is no longer objective. Thanks!
The lowest point on the hour glass is wrong, and I can fix that. Is there anything else I am missing? Also, the client wants it to be "detailed" but I don't want to take away the focal point of the piece. Any ideas on that? I don't want to add stuff, but implied texture and background lighting effects are a possibility.

It's really tough to see at this size so suggesting fixes is hard.
However, I think the rod type thing on the left would be better off in front of the glass (I believe it technically should be next to the glass, like it is up near the top, but that's not gonna work with the way things are right now). Actually, if you really want to mess around with it, it might be better to trim the glass on the left of the bottom so there is some space between it and the rod.
You could also make the bottom of the glass some kind of wrought iron dealie, and have some bits extending out to the left to fill that space. That would fill the "detail" needs without introducing new objects.
I'm sorry if I'm not being very clear; it's rather late and I should be sleeping. If you like, I can do a quick paint-over tomorrow to (hopefully) show what I'm babbling about.
Yeah, I recall a nice Lorescale Coatl that CardKitty postet, textless I think. But that's already a couple of weeks ago, which means ages given the pace this thread grows with.
there were some good ohran vipers too but I suspect those were somewhere between page 50 and page 100 (ages ago, when they were new).

That helps. I'll play with it in photoshop and see if I can make any of that work. Thanks!
Maybe you could find a good action shot of another character who flies and just 'imprint' the costuming & facial features on to it? I bet there's no shortage of good Hawk-Man & other winged-chacters, etc art out there floating around. Gotta be something you can use!
(@Kriggy. You do know his skin turned blue right? He's no longer strictly 'human'. Not to mention, this change was a tied to his being Apocalypse's 'Angel of Death' so 'zombie-esque' is actually not too far out there...sounds like he nailed it. :))
he's not meant to be angel, he's meant to be archangel, like morph said he has had his skin turned blue and his wings to metal. he does look a little undead but its hard not to with blue skin i guess, it was difficult finding an image of arhcangel they were all low quality pics and you coudlnt see any detail, i take it he isnt as popular as he used to be!? wasnt any recent images really only old scans from comics.
maybe i coudl have used another flying character and iven him wings but its too late now, im not gunna try to paint over all of the art once its finished, woudl get rather thick i think.!.
wish i could have found a more dynamic pic of him, him flying out of the card like?
Yeah, I wasn't suggesting go back and re-do..no way you should do all that. It was more of a suggestion for future ones if you ever run into this problem.
Haven't read Marvel in over a decade but I would poke around online and see if you can find fan sites w/large archives of scanned covers for (in this case) X-Factor, around that time. Usually, covers have (by far) the most dynamic images, if I remember correctly. Just an idea.
Also, I'm seeing pages of 'decent' if not perfect images on http://images.google.com Have you tried that?
@T4H: Being a comic nerd myself, I know exactly what you're talking about when you say that Archangel was never drawn exactly the same, especially his wings. Some artists make them look like several small metal "feathers" together to look like wings, in kind of a Wing Shards style. Others make them look more like large metal sheets that take the shape of wings. And then some give him the skullcap while others leave his blonde hair out. Having said that, I think you did an excellent job of morphing a pic of Angel into a pic of Archangel. I'd also like to show you the following pic of Angel that's one of my favorites. I think the wings in this one could have easily (by someone with your skills) been changed from feathers to metal.
You could always just paint what you just said as a fresh art, I'm sure you have the skill to do it.
EDIT: OMG There is a Duress in the MTG world I HAVE TO HAVE, it goes along with my tendrils and someone that has posted on these boards before, painted it.
There's a whole world to the sales side of these things, but no one talks about it.
Mention the nitty-gritty about the money making side of it and "OMFG, ur doin it just for tha money? u suk u sell out" seems to happen.
YES, I WAS DOING IT FOR THE MONEY QUITE A BIT. It didn't stop me from improving my art technique!

Really? Who are these chumps? Have the other commission artists on this thread experienced similar sentiments?
Original art/commissions have always been items that I'm willing to pay for, even at large amounts (e.g. Spencer alterations), because it's a gift I'll never possess myself. If had the ability to make alterations as good as yawg, 4horsemen and the rest, I probably wouldn't spend as much.
But I can't - therefore I appreciate it more, and am always willing to pay appropriately. I wonder if these same people would say the same thing to a musician if they were hiring them to play somewhere, or to an architect who designs a house for them? Both art forms, and yet I doubt you'd see the same sort of whining.

That is exactly what I always worry about, thus I haven't ever been able to figure out the value of the alters I have done. I had a user ask me "What do you value it at?" and I was completely dumbfounded to discover I had no idea how to price a card alter. Any chance one of the many experienced artists here (such as Yawg, CardKitty, etc. (done for Yawg ego boosting purposes)) give me a run down on how to price altered art?

It is different for everyone.
And I vary my numbers a lot to experiment.
I'll say as low as $10 and as high as in the 3 digits. I've gotten triple-digits on commissions before.
I know I charge higher on average, than a lot of folks here.
But that helps thin the number of commissions to ones I really want to do, and people who really care.

I don't get it here so much, but most people that contact me about commissions disappear after I mention prices. I have been told I am reasonable or cheap, so I don't know. In real life people are really into it at first, but price scares them away again. I charge (per hour) roughly 1/3 what a plumber does and I have a 4 year degree, a Masters, and 10 years showing in galleries. It may sound arrogant, but I am a very specialized and good a what I do (although new to card altering).
I usually charge $15 for extended borders, $30 for extended full art, and more for something I completely design. Some cards are tougher and I factor that in, but that is my guideline to start. At those prices I have 11 commissions for the next month lined up, so clearly not everyone thinks I charge too much, but I might. I really don't want to alienate poorer folks though, so I work a lot for cards and trades.

Lol, I like it, but isn't it a little too cute for Cthulhu? Looking at it doesn't make feel like getting insane:D

NO. You aren't paying for that, sir or madam, please insert more money.
