I like that She's not a "typical" protagonist or antagonist int he vein of the other walkers. There isn't some grand quest or heroic obligation for her to latch onto, and she doesn't have any grand scheme or master plan. She's just wandering around, doin' her thang.
Not every Bradywalker they create has to be some kind of epic character.
Until, one day...
*Tamiyo walks from the rain into a roadside food stall on Innistrad and places an order. Just as she sits down and begins to eat, a person walks up behind her and says something in gibberish*
Stall Owner: He says you under arrest, Ms. Tamiyo.
Tamiyo: You've got the wrong gal, sorry.
*more gibberish*
Stall Owner: He says you planeswalker.
Tamiyo: Tell him I'm eating.
*more gibberish*
Tamiyo: ...Nicol Bolas, huh.
*She leaves to accompany the man back to a flying police car*
...I kid, I kid. But she is interesting - I remember the moonfolk in Kamigawa being very haughty, if not outright malevolent and hateful. But she seems too lighthearted and almost innocent for that. I guess Jace and Tezzeret have dark and brooding locked up?
Well then, let's all brace for impact and hope that this PW didn't appear in AVR just because it needed to be introduced and she has nothing to do whatsoever with the events in Innistrad.
Oh, you mean like Sorin and the Incredible Finale?

They took a big beating in Kamigawa and a lot of time has passed. Maybe they've mellowed out a bit since Mochi disappeared.
I think she could have potential as a Core Set reprint. If they're ever willing to let Jace sit on the bench for at least one core set, she seems like a good replacement. Her abilities are fairly general blue fare, and her personality is a good one to act as the "face" of her color.
I'd love it if she just shows up from time to time on various planes, just to observe whatever interesting stuff is around. Not getting involved with any epic stories or personal quests, just hopping around the multiverse looking for neat stuff to learn about.
My headcanon is she writes the Planeswalker's Guides.
My headcanon is she writes the Planeswalker's Guides.
I approve of this.
Another idea that's been suggested is that she appear in the background of cards from various planes every now and again, observing and taking notes. Like a "Where's Waldo?" minigame.
I love that the reason she's here on the plane isn't because she's tied to some plotline or another, she's just hanging out so she can study the moon and the rest of the plane. Her apparent extroversion and enthusiasm are also quite refreshing compared to our other mono-blue walker characters.
And her hair does not disappoint.
A bradywalker that isn't going "I'm a planeswalker, I need to have a connection/fight with another planeswalker NAO!" and not into the ongoing plot? YES!
And my speculation that her arrival in Innistrad was related somehow to the moon came somehow true~! Love her flavor and I love her design, not too regal yet retains her soratami background.

My sentiments exactly! Average, easy-going types like her have been looong overdue. What do people have against a walker that isn't drenched in excessive drama?
I expect that she will play a major role in some event to come. All planeswalkers printed to date have had roles in the storyline; their perspective and presence unbound to a single plane is a great creative tool - they encourage players to stay with MTG by giving a sense of permanency to major characters despite the constant change of setting inherent to the blocks of recent memory. This is typecast to them. If Wizards had no need of that, why go to lengths to design and introduce the character? If she is so irrelevant, they could've neglected her exposition as they have done with many legendary creatures.
Okay, after reading the last few posts, now there are more things I'd like to add to the question pool regarding Tamiyo. First is about her friends, second is about her visits, and third is about her spark.
About friends, it would be nice to know which planeswalkers she has made friends with. I like the idea if she makes friends with Chandra considering that they are similar in a way: Tamiyo is a knowledge hunter, while Chandra is a treasure hunter. With Jace... possible, since Jace himself also travels around a bit. Obviously I doubt she has been in contact of Nicol Bolas and any of his henchmen, nor has she with the Mirrodin planeswalkers (but how about Venser?), nor has she with the ones in Innistrad (two of them are busy playing cat and mouse and the other one is a shy guy). Depending on how close Gideon is to Jace, if she is friends with Jace she may be friends with Gideon too. And that's before counting the rest of planeswalkers I can think of.
And how well-travelled is she? I'm just worried that if she has gone to some... ugly places it may affect her initial cheerful persona. Think of it; What would an observer think if they set foot in a place like Zendikar?
As for her spark, now I'm really curious. Planeswalkers ignite their spark usually by suffering from something big or doing something intense, so how would a happy-going lady like her ignite her spark? Granted, there are some planeswalkers whose way of igniting their sparks are still a mystery (especially Jace; Lili, Nissa, Gideon and Koth probably ignited theirs while doing some dirty business), but considering how cheerful Tamiyo is, it's hard to imagine she has been hurt...
LOL! Those two would make an interesting pair indeed.
That gave me an image of Chandra and Tamiyo flying Tibor and Lumia style.
Edit: I just noticed that her hand is folded like holding a quill, most likely controlling all the quills writing on the scrolls around her. Nice detail.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a terrible event. We actually DO know how Gideon awoke his spark - it was in meditation. Hell, Sarkhan got his ignited when he started talking to a spirit dragon. Moments of great stress or great epiphany are the trigger, not necessarily tragic events.
IIRC, we know what made Jace realize he was a Planeswalker, but he was too young at the time to have begun doing dirty work. I'm thinking Koth may have woken his with the rising of the 5th Sun, but that's speculah.
Also, just because your happy go lucky doesn't mean you can't comprehend suffering or that you haven't hurt, or that serious evil will shake you to your core.
I know a few people whose lives have been difficult, but who take it in stride and enjoy themselves and life. It is possible to push past suffering.

In the blurb given out on the article, it was mentioned that she was a field scholar pre-ascencion.
Unless I am mistaking the use of words here I think she travels well, and this can even be used to link on how she ascended. Maybe she faced danger while she was doing research somewhere back in Kamigawa? Or as mentioned by KyoraSan, her ascension might even be as simple as Gideon's.

Definitely NOT going to start playing blue because of her.
Isn't that fine, though? Overly powerful planeswalkers (like, say, a certain other blue one) can be oppressive and format-warping. I think it's alright to make planeswalkers that are merely good and not "gotta play this now" great.
EDIT: As a scientist, I have to say, you grossly oversimplified science...although you aren't exactly wrong. That said, she's closer in spirit to the "natural philosophers" of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries than to most modern scientists.

I can't believe I'm actually thinking conversations between them now.

True. It would be nice to hear a little more about the state of that plane, even if we don't go back (and we almost certainly never will).

... y'all don't suppose that's actually what's on those scrolls floating around her do you?
I'd hate to see Chandra's face if she ever reads hers and how she's made out to be a walking bomb.

A wildcard eh?

Technically, she isn't Japanese tho. She's Kamigawan.
Besides, I think she's beyond the stereotype: I don't see a camera or a hat.
