From what I've heard, it was because SCG's competitors were using it to track SCG's pricing and adjusting their own prices to reflect. I could see why SCG would want that to stop. Yes, it sucks, but when you run a business you want there to be a level playing field whenever possible.
Not that I like complaint about a free site that I use pretty frequently myself and I understand why SCG wouldn't want them to do it... But why would the creators of ark42 give in? There not for profit are they? And any link to there Facebook?
What reason did Ark42 have to comply with SCGs request? Was Ark42 using SCG data? Even if Ark42 pulled prices from SCG, the prices are for any one to see (Ark42 just made it easier to see trends).
I have noticed before that SCG is protective of their pricing data. For instance, you can't just copy and paste a price for a card. Nor can you import the data from their buylist to an excel spreadsheet. It seems that each digit of the price is created by an individual html division (div). The divs are eached named with a cryptic string of letters. For example the number 6 in Deathrite Shaman's price is displayed with the following code:

You should create your own store and sell cards for cheaper than them if you think they're ripping people off. That way you can set your own prices. Seems like a better use of your time.

They're not ripping people off. There are plenty of other places to buy singles if you think they charge too much. It's not like SCG has a monopoly on online Magic sales..

When a store pulls land tax the day before it gets unbanned, then reposts the next day at x5 the value, you tend to lose respect for them.
Selling FTV for over $100.00 is just price gouging
Selling RTR for more then they've sold other boxs, just cause they know people will still pay.... yea. They really care about their customers.
Yea its a buisness, yada yada.
Them "forcing" a site to close some of its parts down becuase they are afraid of a little competition is sad. I can proudly say iv'e never given SCG any of my money, and never will.

This is mainly about finding another site similar.

With the two specific price tracking features they've had to take down? Nothing I've found. So you know, if SCG really did force Ark42 into gutting their site, that's BS, and shame on SCG for that. I just can't get mad at them for charging w/e price they want. They are the price leader in secondary market sales.

Ark42 was scraping. That's certainly something that is frowned upon by many sites. This isn't something new. SCG (and many other sites) intentionally hide their numbers so they don't get scraped. That said, if SCG didn't want them to scrape, they could ratchet things up and block the source IPs entirely. There are plenty of ways of stopping scrapers and plenty of ways around those. Asking nicely is a nice way of getting someone to stop without getting into an arms race.

While I highly doubt this is true, if it is, then it means that SCG has an inside connection with Wizards who informed them. If that's so, blame Wizards, not SCG. SCG acting on privileged information is simply good business sense. Besides, there were plenty of other online retailers that didn't boost their prices before (and this is still allegedly at the time) that Land Tax could still be purchased from. And let's not forget that those same online retailers ALSO raised their prices in accordance with Land Tax being unbanned.
On September 16th, based on Sheldon Menery's SCG articles, I went down to my LGS and purchased a foil Kokusho that had been sitting in their card binder since before I started playing. While it hadn't been explicitly stated at that point that it would get unbanned a few days later, I could see the writing on the wall, and I acted on it. Low and behold, 2 days later, it got unbanned and the value went up. Am I simply a heartless profiteer for using knowledge and intuition to improve my financial standing?

FTV sets are specifically meant for COLLECTORS, who are more than willing to fork over $100 versus paying about $400 for original edition foils of those same cards. Deal with it.
Selling RTR for more then they've sold other boxs, just cause they know people will still pay.... yea. They really care about their customers.
You rail about SCG being a soulless business entity, and yet they're still the largest and most prominent online MTG retailer by a wide margin. Obviously their multitude of customers who are willing to pay their prices don't share your criticisms.
Them "forcing" a site to close some of its parts down becuase they are afraid of a little competition is sad. I can proudly say iv'e never given SCG any of my money, and never will.
SCG "asked" them to stop collecting their info, they didn't "force" them. You air-quoting an implication doesn't make it so. They're also well within their rights to take whatever measures they want to keep their competitors from profiting from their pricing info.
For the record, I've never purchased anything from SCG. The only online retailer I've ever made a purchase from is ChannelFireball, and the value of the cards I bought amounted to less than $2.

Why do they have to have insider information to pull a card before a well known ban/unban date? From what I can tell, they pull all of the cards that could be banned/unbanned from stock the day before the banning/unbanning so that they can properly price them. There was plenty of chatter going into that unbanning that if people wanted to speculate on Land Tax, they easily could have.
You know what I did when Valakut was unbanned in Modern? Immediately went and purchased the cards for it. The next day, those card prices were significantly higher. If that vendor had put a freeze on those cards, I couldn't have done that and they would have made more money. SCG figured that out and put a freeze on the cards they think could be banned or unbanned. That's not insider information. That's being smart.
Why do they have to have insider information to pull a card before a well known ban/unban date?
Heh, good catch. Truthfully they don't. I was simply playing along with the "big bad evil SCG" angle where they possibly have 5 child psychics chained to beds in their basement, only being fed when they predict ban list updates and metagame shifts.
While the Ark42 site was a great resource, I can't believe that SCG is being labelled the villain here. Just as MTG salvation does not condone image leaching from other sites, why should SCG condone a site scraping their entire database however often Ark was doing it?
E-commerce is SCG's lifeblood. If they lose a single sale because their website is down or slow because another site is scraping their data then they are not doing enough to protect their shareholders or owners.
I've owned an ISP/web host in the past. I can tell you that sites scraping data from another site can be a borderline DoS attack, if not outright.
Asking the offender to nicely stop is a good first step. Blocking their IPs at the firewall is a good next step if they don't comply.
Again, sorry to see these features gone on Ark42, but I'm still not seeing where SCG is at fault here.

- I dislike apple to, whats your point. I am not the only one that has a dislike for SCG.
All in all, what SCG did was only piss off a handfull of people for no reason. Made it SLIGHTLY more inconvenient to undercut them. Good job SCG.
Anyone think that Ark42 actually kept SCG in check? Now card value information will take a couple more days to follow SCG's footsteps... I think my gripe with all this is SCG forced a not for profit website that a lot of users find useful to bend a bit to there will.
As a web developer scrapping is frowned upon but like I tell people... If you don't want to ever see it on the web or used by others on the web... Then don't put it on the World Wide Web...
SCG prices cards at what they want to price them and they sell them for that price.
Customers then have the choice of either buying from them or buying from somebody else.
Hmmm ... Free market society. Yeah, that sounds like a rip off to me.
Nobody is holding a gun to your head forcing you to buy from SCG. Personally, I've never bought anything from SCG and I spend about $700 on cards every 3 months. This last quarter I spent under $300 because I'm close to broke. But I got good deals on the cards I bought and didn't buy from SCG.
So will somebody please explain to me (and just a warning, I run my own business) how SCG is ripping people off when those same people have free will to buy from whoever they want?
I'll wait for anything resembling a logical explanation.

You won't get a logical explanation from anyone bashing SCG on here because the majority of people that are complaining are children that have no concept of business or a free market.
Seems like everyday a thread turns into "bash SCG for being successful". If you don't want to pay the prices that SCG sells cards at, there are actually hundreds, if not thousands, of other online shops (not even counting ebay) that sell the same cards cheaper.
I can guarantee you that you will never be forced to buy from SCG, unless you are foolish enough to show up to one of their tournaments and need to buy cards; then you will experience a valuable business lesson in Supply and Demand and/or Scarcity of Goods.

Most of the people bashing SCG in this thread are bashing the fact that they've shut down key features from Ark42. If you're spending money at SCG and whining about it, it's your own damn fault, and you have no valid complaint. The point of this thread though (finding a site that is similar to Ark42/there is none), is a completely valid reason to bash SCG.

It's actually ridiculous that people are bashing on SCG for ripping people off, as if somehow those people were being forced to buy from them.
Also, why wouldn't SCG bump up the price of Land Tax? It's hardly shady business practice. SCG is very highly regarded as having impeccable, customer focused business practices (we're not just talking prices here). They always honor agreed upon prices when buying, and always ship out pre-orders at lower prices, despite the cards going up in price. I couldn't say the same about some other less reputable online stores.
Sure SCG often has higher than usual prices for Standard stuff, but I've found their prices for older stuff, particularly foils to be very reasonable, and sometimes the cheapest around. For instance, I got a foil Rishadan Port from them recently that was the cheapest I could find on the internet, including Ebay.
If you've ever dealt with SCG, I think you'll find it hard to find a real reason to bash them. If you don't like the prices, then don't shop there. No one is forcing you.

No, this is nowhere near a valid reason to bash SCG. They simply asked a website to stop something that they were doing, and the website complied. Exactly what has SCG done that is a "completely valid reason" for people to bash them again?

If it wasen't for starcity, the best price guide online would still be worth using, its not now, and its becuase of starcity.
They lost no money to them, it was non profit. If anything, it was a shortcut to starcitys prices.
You can STILL go to starcity, and STILL look up prices.
Noting positive came from this, except for scg pissing some people off.
The logic fail in this thread is making my head explode. If you don't like SCG, why do you want Ark42 to use SCG price data? Why don't you want Ark42 to get its price data from a source that you think is better?
Also, the people who think stores shouldn't change their card prices in response to changes in demand or events such as banning have got to be kidding. Magic cards are constantly changing in value with every shift in the metagame and every set printed and running a good Magic business is all about responding to those changes as fast as possible. There are 50 billion places to buy Magic cards both on the internet, b&m stores, and trading with friends.
If you want to complain about any organization setting the price of Magic cards, complain about ebay buyers and sellers - because ebay sales actually determine the baseline value more than scg does. I guarantee scg pays staff to watch ebay 24/7 and that the scg price changes are driven by ebay more than anything else.

Took down its 2 most useful features.
A month ago they took down recent price changes
(a quick guide to what prices recently changed in the world of magic)
I could cope, since i then just used the price list, which used green/red up/down arrows to let you know what increased/decreased in value.
Well, last week they took that down to, i went to thier facebook group and inquired about it.
Apprently SCG urged them to take it down.
Another story of SCG sucking and people not sticking up to bullies, blah blah.
TL;DR? is there another site similar to ark42? one thats acts sort of like a magic stock market?

They lost no money to them, it was non profit. If anything, it was a shortcut to starcitys prices.
You can STILL go to starcity, and STILL look up prices.
Noting positive came from this, except for scg pissing some people off.
Big thanks to Rivenor for the sig!!
