According to gatherer on the mother site in the rulings section for Melek, Izzet Paragon: If the top card of your library is a land, you can play it if you could play a land.
Is this an error? I wouldn't think Melek worked this way but if so it makes him much more awesome.

Yes, it is an error. Someone probably copy/pasted the rulings from Oracle of Mul Daya as to playing with the top card of your deck revealed, and forgot to change it.
Yes, the ruling is incorrect (they took some rulings for other cards, but forgot to remove that one). Gatherer should be fixed next week-ish.
