jeffderek asked: You've said in the past that Magic tries to avoid using women as purely sexual beings in art, and specifically tries to avoid images of women being taken advantage of. I realize this isn't art on a Magic card itself, but what do you think of the Grand Prix Indy playmat being given out? I'm not a woman, nor am I easily offended, but it's actually kind of offensive looking. I'd link you to the art but Tumblr won't let me, so I hope you can find it.
To quote Elaine Chase, Magic’s Brand Manager on Twitter: “That playmat is not authorized and will not be given out.”
I am curious to see what the art was and what people think about it.
I wonder if this means there won't be a playmat for GP: Indianapolis then. GP is less than three weeks away.

I was driven from this once-great site by abusive mods and admins, who create rules out of thin air to punish people for breaking them (meaning the rule does not exist under forum rules) and selectively enforce the rules that are written on the forum rules. I am currently lurking while deleting 6 years and 2 months of posting history. I will return when ExpiredRascals, Teia Rabishu and Blinking Spirit are no longer in power.
IT could literally be a guy choking his wife and it wouldn't be as provocative as a Earthbind.
Also, consider magic's willingness to depict violent, graphic murder, especially prevelant in the most recent block, and now they're afraid of something because it sexualizes somebody?
I have a feeling these playmats will eventually slip out and be worth a lot. Wizards doesn't seem to have the best methods of dealing with product they want destroyed.

Mixed values and utter bull****.
Seriously. Maybe someone should put those full-scale on a playmat and see if Wizards bans their own imagery.

So outright decapitation is fine, half naked chicks everywhere is fine, but a half naked chick licking a goblin is over the line?? This is ridiculous, I was considering hitting GP Indy and was about 50/50. If this playmat was an incentive, I'd go in an instant, but it being banned makes me not want to go at all, idiocy.

Wait -- this playmat art that you didn't know what it was until a little bit ago is determining whether or not you attend a GP? You realize it is a MTG tournament where people play MTG in swiss rounds in an effort to win? Play spells? Turn cards sideways?
No, you're right -- it's a risque mat convention.

This mat would be fine for me to own, but I can see why brand wouldn't want it. What's the source on this though, I can't find anything official on it. Maybe it's a trollmat.
The image I found was pulled from the twitter conversation MaRo cited with Elaine Chase, Brand Director for WOTC
People are saying that the mat may be worse than the PT philly shirt...what did the shirt look like because all I can find is one picture of a person wearing it but from what little I could see it didn't look bad at all.
I thought the playmats were produced by a third party (in this case, pasttimes.net); if that's the case, they were just no allowed to give away their free advertising. I expect the mats themselves will be on sale at the website and might go for a bit more than your standard playmat, but other than that I think Wizards has enough clout to get someone else to get a different playmat from someone else, even if it is at the last minute.

I was debating going at all, this playmat would have tipped the scale into going. The fact that they banned it for ludicrous reasons tips it the other way, that's all I was saying.

Just to be clear, the playmat was not banned for being sexy. It was banned for being sexist.*
Quote from "Elaine Chase" »
We keep a standard for Magic art to portray strong female characters. Sexy is OK, submissive or damsels in distress is not.
* N.B.: Sexist in the opinion of the people at WotC whose opinions matter when it comes to making these decisions. There need be no argument about this.
How's it a stupid reason? Elaine Chase's tweet sums it up perfectly.
We keep a standard for Magic art to portray strong female characters. Sexy is OK, submissive or damsels in distress is not.
Just because 90% of M:TG players are male does not mean that WOTC wants to do something that would mildly please that 90%, and alienate the other 10%. That's bad marketing.
Sorry, but I find that offensive. I have been banned on other forums for having too risque artwork as my avatar and anime, so it is not some holy crusade. I do not like it, and I am glad it was banned because it is offensive and may be demeaning to some.

Apparently goblin-run harems are NOT good PR. Who knew?
Am I the only one who noticed that the elf woman at the bottom left looks kind of deformed? I understand that artists often exaggerate the female form to make it more attractive, but, like, her legs don't match up with her hips. And she also looks like she has some pretty bad flounder-boob.
Also, I am disappointed to see that the Angel of Despair apparently became an "escort" in her later years.
I am curious to see what the art was and what people think about it.

Tragically, the image is too small to tell who the artist is. Reminds me of Ron Spears though.
That's funny, it kind of reminded me of Ron Jeremy.

DUDE THIS MAT IS AWESOME. Did you SEEEEEEE the art at the freakin' San Diego one? WTF. I want this mat so bad.
I dunno. I'm not offended by this. Maybe it's the girl near the Goblin's mouth, but whatever. I don't see a big deal with it.
Should the guys be upset that a Goblin is at the throne and there are human male heads at his feet?
