I was passed this information today, which appears to be a mass email sent out to employees, artists, writers, and contributors of the magazine.
January 29, 2009
Dear Scrye Contributor: We at F+W Media continuously analyze our publishing strategy to determine if we are meeting our readers' needs and company goals. We take into consideration the marketplace we serve and the opportunities available for each of our magazine titles.
After much analysis and deliberation, we have determined to cease publication of Scrye magazine; the final issue will be the April 2009 edition, issue #131.
You may have specific questions about what has happened, and we have attempted to answer some general concerns below. If you have additional questions or concerns, feel free to e-mail me at joyce.greenholdt@fwmedia.com.
You have helped provide our readers with a consistent supply of information, instruction, and entertainment. On behalf of everyone at Scrye Magazine, I would like to thank you for your contributions to the magazine.
Dianne Wheeler

*GENERAL CONCERNS*
*Why are you ceasing publication of Scrye?*
With the escalating price of producing the magazine and declining subscriber and advertising bases, the future profitability of the magazine was questionable, at best. As such, the decision was made to apply resources and staff to other areas with greater long-term potential.
*Will this change delay when I get paid for stories that have been published?*
No.
*What is the copyright status of stories that have appeared in Scrye?*
F+W retains those rights.
*Will you have work for me in the future?*
While it is possible that we may produce games-focused special magazine, book, or digital projects in the future, nothing is currently scheduled. F+W continues to publish a wide range of publications for collectors and hobbyists, so there may be opportunities available for you, depending on your other interests.
*I like writing for F+W. What are some of your other publications?*
Please visit us on the Web at www.fwpublications.com.
*How can I keep in touch with you?*
I am still employed at F+W, now working on the editorial staff of Goldmine, our bi-weekly magazine for record collectors and music enthusiasts. You can continue to reach me at joyce.greenholdt@fwmedia.com or (715) 445-4612 ext.13419.
According to Wikipedia, Scrye has been produced since 1993, two years before InQuest first appeared. It's death marks the passing of the last major Magic publication.
I blame the internet. Print magazines for magic are truly ineffective these days, and price guides are useless with the internet, ebay, and how often the market varies.
This affects me...in that my store basically uses Scrye median price for singles, also taking into account SCG prices.
I will try to get them to compare SCG and ebay (MOTL) now...

I don't have any hard numbers on this, but I'm targeted more often than a black guy driving a beat-up sedan with a broken tail-light and no license plate, and Cy's well aware of that.
It's a real shame they couldn't turn it into an e-zene. I still have my Ice Age preview issue of Scrye that I look back on fondly. I'm sad to see it go.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
I blame MTGSALVATION. All the people getting 100% of their magic news and information here and from sources like it killed magic in the papers. I really don't feel Like I should pay to read what others think, especially in such an unimportant matter like a trading card game.

"Wizards could put $100 bills in packs and people would complain about how they were folded."
The only way this affects me is that now I can go back to ripping off people who don't know the actual prices of cards. I used to hate when during a trade, the other party took out the magazine and looked what the REAL price of the card was. That was way annoying.
I use to buy the odd issue of Scrye back several years ago when I use to play other CCGs, collect comic books, and the internet barely existed.
It was useful enough back then for spreading the word, but these days a paper magazine really has no hope of competing with the internet. I liked it well enough but I can't say I'm really sad to see it go.

I hate predators like you who seek to take advantage of people who don't understand the game as well. The game we play does not extend to the trading aspect of the game, making steals of trades is downright dishonorable especially when we should be supporting our fellow players. Before I really got into the game, I once opened an Arcbound Ravager. I was jumped on, and wound up trading it away for Ayumi, the Last Visitor and Oyobi, who Split the Heavens... 3% of my card's original value. Ever since, I've made an effort to protect people from people like you. The loss of Skrye is a tragedy, since it makes it so much easier for you monsters to prey on people.

Yes. It is the falt of the internet. The magizine industry is disappearing beucase why wait a whole month for news when you can get it the day it happened. I don't agree with your stance in the enboldened text however, becuase writers and journalists perform a vaulable service to society, and deserve to be compensated for it. this is a pretty frequent debate among players...at least from my experience. it really is too bad that people go out trying to rip other people off...that's just wrong. but there's nothing wrong with trying to make out better in trades. i mean, that's the nature of trading. though...that mentality does come back to a "trader beware" paradigm.
in the end, it's a shame that scry will be no more.
I used to read the magazines every other month when they came out back in 95-2000. Once I got my own place and the internet, MTG News and later, MTG Salvation became my main source of information.
I don't see why the Scrye staff doesn't set up a web site for their news articles and other publications as well as their own version of the magic market price guide. This way we can still get news and some insider info but it would be a website with forums and other cool stuff.
In the MWS world, for many players, winning also makes you a noob.
The same applies to:
-Knowing the rules.
-Netdecking.
-Not netdecking.
-Using old versions of a card (yeah, it has hapenned to me: "Ugh... ugly pic noob")
-Knowing English.
-Using phases.
-Countering spells.
<@MarkRosewater> THis is a secret we've carefully guarded but for this chat I'm going to spill the beans.
<@MarkRosewater> Some cards in Magic are better than others.
<@MarkRosewater> Ssh, don't tell anyone.
I'll betcha in 20 years, there will be no substantial audience for magazines in general. It's a shame, but the niche and smaller hobbies will most likely be the first to go. Also, looking at the demographic that plays magic, I'd bet my life's savings that they use the internet far more than printed material. Convenient and free. Can't compete with that at all.
It's too bad to hear about Scrye, though! It's always sad when a good publication ceases.
While I can't say I'm particularly thrilled that Scrye will no longer be published, can anyone really say they didn't see it coming? Every shop I deal with in my local area sells cards online anyways, so generally the online median is what they go for in shop, I can't imagine it was just a St.Louis thing.

You know, if Magic and other card games that were actually popular had gone back to putting varient or preview cards into the plastic wrap maybe we'd have incentive to buy. I'm sad because I occasionally read the articles in Scrye. I'm one of the few people who actually buys magazines (I'd say about 3-4 scrye's per year), and I subscribe to Entertainment Weekly and EGM. I love the internet, but I like being able to hold the magazine in my hands.
The only way this affects me is that now I can go back to ripping off people who don't know the actual prices of cards. I used to hate when during a trade, the other party took out the magazine and looked what the REAL price of the card was. That was way annoying.
They'll be pulling out laptops now instead. People at my store always thought scryes pricing on singles was wrong for some reason, my store sold singles based on scrye as well, I wonder what source they'll go by now?

This is a pretty ignorant statement and hope if you rip a little kid his brother comes and "Fixes" the problem you caused.
ANYWAY On another side I am happy there is no mag anymore for a certain extent. Some cards *crap rares* would be worth 4x there value in the mag and would end up screawing the value sets of cards in trades. Just been happy a friend has had a wireless mini comp to help on the values. But I do miss reading some of the articles:(
Sad to see it go, several shops I go to use it to help with pricing.
That said it's understandable with the economic crisis going on i'm sure many niche publications will vanish in the same way and sad though it is, TCG's are a pretty niche area of interest.
I know of a few stores that will be greatly affected since this was their only resource to base prices on. It won't affect me any since I use prices from online stores when I sell or trade. Still it will be missed.
i am not sad to see it go, i believe its prices were never consistently correct and actually boosted the price of crap cards and it didnt matter what they said about high valued cards. Your stores would put all cards minimum at scrye prices but would then boost the higher cards as if scrye was wrong.
I agree with tyler durden thats annoying anyways. Your card's value is only its worth to you. If you dont know a card is good too bad. If you do and you try to get the value out of the card, good for you. If you dont know your cards price then its just a piece of cardboard.
I am sad to see it go, but it was never at the grocery store anyway. I subscribe to a few magazines, but the majority of the one I buy are impulse items when I shop for my family. I have a desk job and can't cruise the internet all day, so it was nice to have a magazine with big glossy photos and articles to read while I was taking phone calls at work. I think the problem was their format sure, (Success comes online) HOWEVER, they could have created something unique that was not available online and offered added value. But they never really did that. And they weren't available when I wanted an issue.
i'm glad to see it go for numerous reasons. first of all i hated the pricing on the cards and hated it more when people used it as a way to make a trade. i was in need of troll ascetics and knowing that tarmogoyf was a 20$ card had to make a bad trade just tget the troll.(scrye had it listed at 8$) if the magazine hadn't existed i might have gotten more value out of my trade. They made some bad ruling calls in the card questions section.(which was sometimes refered to during fnm instead of using wizards website). occasionaly their bad reviews worked out in my favor when it came to trading when a new set came out.
