Powerful as in Nacatl is the better card. As in, Nacatl is nigh-broken and was banned in Modern for a reason, while Sharuum sees no play. You know what I meant. It's also more complex - Wild Nacatl involves a little bit of book-keeping whereas Sharuum is virtual vanilla. Neither is a super complex card but Sharuum sure isn't mythic for complexity.
Mizzium Mortars is sometimes a Plague Wind, an effect that only exists at rare (And sweepers in general exist at rare with the exception of Pyroclasm effects, which granted this is). Dreadbore is rare because it references planeswalkers. Abrupt Decay is rare because it's part of a rare cycle along with the other uncounterable cards. Detention Sphere is probably above the complexity threshold for common nowadays; it could be an uncommon, but then again Maelstrom Pulse was a rare and the sphere, if it showed up in packs too often, would probably hose the Selesnya tokens decks too much.
People overly focus on the rare removal in the set and ignore Ultimate Price and all the charms at Uncommon.
I actually expect that thoughtseize won't be in here. Why? It's too essentially black and it's probably standard fair. Given that context, I think they'll save it for an eventual standard-legal set.
I feel like they will focus on things that won't fly in standard for various reasons--complexity, power, and flavor being the most obvious. I am hoping that, given the context of this set, the commons and uncommons fly directly in the face of the "new world order."

Sig by Dark Night Cavalier at Heroes of the Plane Studios!
Hi, my friend and I have been discussing what Commons might actually show up as commons in MM. How many Commons will be Uncommons shifted down? How many could be rares? Could Rares like Isamaru be uncommon, could Path to Exile and Lightning Helix be common?
Basically, will they value "Putting cards out there" over draftability? The set is intended to be draftable, what sort of commons would be appropriate to reprint in this set towards that end, even if they don't make a splash in Modern?
My arguments: Lightning Bolt is a given.
Thoughtseize could be printed at Common, just like Duress.
Krosan Grip and Magma Jet could be bumped down to common for this set.
Any thoughts?
Lightning Bolt was m10, printed AFTER Alara Reborn, but BEFORE Eighth Edition.
Thoughtseize cannot be common. It's a $35 card. Wotc wants more cards out there without completely wreaking the market. Saying Thoughtseize can be common is like saying Duress can be Mythic.

AF did say that the set goes way over the complexity of current sets (Which is why they're trying to keep it out of the hands of less experienced players), though there'll probably be some degree of NWO to it - I expect it won't be crammed full of on-board effects at common like some of those sets were.

On average, Magic players are worse at new card evaluation than almost every other skill, except perhaps sideboarding.
I was worried at first too, and I'm sure we'll get some jank for NWO reasons or to fill space, but just sketching stuff out I think it'll be easy to fill out the common slots in the set. For example, here's my "dream team" list for blue commons (assuming 16 commons/color, which leaves 21 common slots for multicolor, artifact, and land):
Some of those are a bit lame for a "Modern Masters" set, of course. Ninjas is a tier 3 deck, Echoing Truth is a sideboard card, and Mulldrifter, Teachings, Harbinger, and Condescend see play approximately nowhere but have historically been powerful and important. But it only moves 1 card down a slot in rarity (Faerie Harbinger) and fulfills all the other requirements of the set (8th-Alara Block only, which I feel discounts Mana Leak; makes Faeries and Storm, among other archetypes, draftable in limited). And that's just an ideal list; there are tons more options for blue! We could see Cloud Sprite or Mothdust Changeling or even Cursecatcher moved to common, for NWO purposes. Depending on interpretation, Mana Leak and Think Twice could be valid for the set. They could go for Boomerang or Compulsive Research in place of one of the above cards. And they could shift down Telling Time.
Long story short: while I'm sure there will be a dud or three, I think the commons in this set will be packed with just as much awesomeness as all the other rarity slots

This list doesn't feel like it gives Blue a way to win in limited.
IMO it would need a few other cards like Somber Hoverguard or Errant Ephemeron (or less likely but maybe possible in this set) a rarity-downshifted Air Elemental - cards that are included solely or primarily for Limited.

This set can be drafted. It doesn't mean it is being MADE to be drafted. Just Saying.

I think the fact that they're making the box 24 packs per box, and the fact that there's a GP with Modern Masters Draft, might be hinted at as it -made- to be drafted.
Not a change in rarity but the new Signet arts are almost assuredly for this set for common mana fixing (unsure if this was already stated in another thread).
New art. 'Too powerful for Standard.' Modern staple.

Yeah, it kinda does. The last time they put out a set that came in boosters but wasn't developed for limited was Unglued. The time before that was Alliances.
A lot of people talking about draft... Just because the set is made to be drafted, that don't means it will contain limited-only-totally-unplayable-otherwise-junk.
Being draftable is like the second focus of the set, the main focus is to provide modern staples. Not adding playable cards just to add limited junk don't seems the main goal.
I wouldn't be suprised to see some of the common cyclers, such as those found in living end decks, in this set. Most of the cards like architects of will and valley rannet can be splashed pretty easily in a variety of decks and, while not optimal, can work as decent mana fixers.
This is the lamest thing I have heard in the last 200 years. Just because it isn't broken doesn't make it a grey ogre. It ramps and grows itself outside of shenanigans. C'mon.jpg

My favorite flavor text: Time of Heroes
Feel free to tell me yours!
I realized a few minutes after I made my post that KotR does, indeed, search for lands. Sadly, the only lands I search for in Modern are fetchlands (guess what isn't in Modern Masters), Bojuka Bog post-board (not in Modern Masters again), Ghost Quarter/Tectonic Edge (only GQ is Masters-eligible), and maybe manlands and Moorland Haunt (have fun trying to draft Mutavault; maybe Treetop Village is more viable; Haunt certainly isn't in Masters).
KotR is such a good attacker in Modern that I've never used her as an ersatz mana dork. 3-cmc mana dorks that require your colours to already be fixed in order to be played are pretty bad, anyway.
yPretty sure the guy who thinks Thoughtsieze could be a common is trolling. I could see it reprinted and staying rare, because it doesn't do something that deserves it being a mythic. Remember, there is only 14 cards left for the Mythic slot, and while I could see a case for Bob or Vendilion Clique, Thoughtsieze seems unlikely. I could see a reprint of the good Elspeth, though probably not any other planeswalker from that era. The only other good one was Ajani Vengeant, and he isn't good enough for Modern unfortunately.

I think they learned a lesson from MTGO Master's Editions and will focus much more on making the set entertaining to draft.
They have specifically said it is made to be drafted.

"Personally I love high-riak, low-reqars gambles. Life's best with a decent amount of riak. And f*** reqars."
Since there are no Zendikar fetches in the set, Knight of the Reliquary may as well be a Gray Ogre in draft (unless you put 6+ Terramorphic Expanses in your deck).
If they get weird enough, Kami of Ancient Law is a Grizzly Bears that sees rare Modern sideboard play.
Of course, we probably all know that Dark Confidant has the cmc and body of a slightly worse Grizzly Bears.

When Wotc talkling about “changes in rarity”, mostly, they are talking about upgrading. Not downgrading.
Daydreaming about getting staple cards like Thoughtseize at common card price, is not good for health.
