looking into it Domri Rade could be an anagram of dormidera (also known as mimosa pudica or touch me nots). These plants can have both sex characteristics so this might be a subliminal kind of thing
This, if true, this is the most convincing post in the thread. I'm amused further this wordplay is noted by King Pun. It's even worse than Liliana Vess being an anagram of 'Villainess,' which is what gives me reasonable cause.
Um, excuse me? Why would a trans character be disgusting?
The same reason anyone could find a man or woman disgusting. Not their thing.
I would be disgusted by the angle chosen, that is, the punk-rock aesthetic stereotype. It'd be tremendously pandering to the naive, who'll accept it as inclusive, and damaging to those who recognize exploitation when they see it.
You don't call "dying to removal" if the removal is more expensive in resources than the creature. If you have to spend BG (Abrupt Decay), or W + basic land (PtE) to remove a 1G, that is not "dying to removal". Strictly speaking Goyf dies to removal, but actually your removal is dying to Goyf.
He is no older then sixteen. Maybe seventeen. All evidence points to the fact that he's the Gruul wild child from "In the Praise of the Worldsoul."
Except that there were no unnamed Gruul children in the story. In fact the only child mentioned was the one that Cecilee "adopted" who was sentimentally name Ruzi, after her brother. So unless he got a name change that's one point against it. Another two possible points are, A. There is no mention of time setting or time frame in the story, but to me it seemed like this was all happening in the present RTR time frame, so the baby wouldn't be old enough. B. Even if this did happen long enough ago for the child be a Domri-like age it is more likely that the child would have been raised by Ruzi as a Selesnyan wolf rider.
Although, to say that a Gruul orphan wolf rider PW wouldn't make for an amazing character, would be a quite a lie lol.
And just for debates sake, I think Domri is indeed male for the reason stated by multiple people already, that is one super flat chest for it to be a female in any Magic universe. Wizards likes them some ta-tas, just sayin
Domri Rade is almost certainly a human, judging from the image of him, but I do agree that M:tG definitely needs to have a goblin planeswalker at some point in the near future.

I vote for Domri Rade being a male. He has a triangular torso and a flat chest. Very rare do you see a woman like this in the realm of fantasy. :\ Lots of stereotyping in fantasy. EITHER WAY, they really should of done a better job with his picture, its too small for the card. The fact that theres a thread about it confirms that. Slap it next to something like Karn or Liliana, you can clearly tell the details about the card. This just kinda seems like a jumbled mess. This might just be the photo they have up. Don't know. Maybe I'm deaf.
I think I'd puke if they made the character transgender.
It'd be such a horribly obvious attempt at portraying a trans character in a way assumed by people that have never met someone trans--as looking somewhere between male and female.
Literally would be horrible. Please don't make me hate you wotc.

I live in San Francisco and this would actually be an accurate transgender person I think. Most of the ones I know that are the age of Domri Rade (apparent age at least) do the dirty, punky look instead of the whole flamboyant Mrs. Doubtfire thing usually portrayed in the media.

Age wise, I can concur--but style wise, I think I know one transguy who has a styling like that around here (east coast, near NYC) out of the five or so other trans people I know.
Then again, I met all through college. So age is probably the limit from that really.
I meant more the androgynous appearance than the styling however.

Right, most of the older transgender people I know that aren't prostitutes usually settle down and wear clothes that can be considered "androgynous" but are more feminine than masculine, for example, female jeans that aren't too tight and a blouse that looks like a male's collared shirt. That's for the men anyways, the female to males are usually much more aggressive and generally angry people, at least they tend to be.
Anyways I knew at the beginning of this thread that the trans idea was probably wrong since this is a game rated 13+ and transgender issues are generally considered "adult situations" in america, but it's a fun idea to kick around.

Must be a regional thing, since none of the trans people I know do that kind of punky look and I live in the Vancouver area.

The thought of homo-/bisexuality and transgender stuff being somehow more "adult" than heterosexuality or cisgender stuff honestly boggles my mind.
The idea of a transgendered character on a mtg card is just plain silly for so many reasons.
Why would Wizards want to promote controversy in their game when it has no point in the realm of storyline or gameplay? They removed the "demon" creature type for years because of it.
And even if it is confirmed now, there was never any question whatsoever to whether or not Domri was male... I mean seriously? For one the only thing covering his chest (which is very obviously masculine in muscle form even past the lack of breasts) is a diagonal strap.
To those that were saying him not being massive is very non-gruul, that is an extreme lack of imagination.
Shamans are very Gruul, as well as a small scrappy fighter who maybe doesn't fight so fair, or even that just uses magic in an aggressive nature. What about the Slizt clan?

This is actually exactly what I thought when I first saw the card art. I picture an anime-style young boy who has immense magic power and can call an army of green-red beasts to his side with a snap of his fingers, as well as backflipping and effortlessly jumping up on top of buildings like they usually do in anime.

That is an intense thing to say in my opininion. Sex can be confusing enough for children, and this is really in the realm of what their parents decide they are ready for. A fantasy trading card game really isn't the place for what seems to be one's personal human rights agenda.

I think (s)he was saying that (s)he thinks transgender acceptance should be a more mainstream issue, which I actually agree with, but again this is a fantasy game about magic powers designed for 14 year olds, so dealing with relatively mundane situations like transgender acceptance would actually detract from that fantasy setting. After all, it is only 2013, not 2413.

Male/female relationships? G-rated. Male/male or female/female relationships? Apparently not G-rated. That's a double standard I honestly have trouble understanding.
Also Spazik: 1) She, 2) You can spin that kind of thing to fit a young teenage audience. X-Men does that to varying degrees of success (mutants have been variously allegorical of AIDS victims, racial minorities, gay people, etc). The main thing is you need more finesse than Wizards will ever have.
Also, the fact is that anything outside of Heterosexuality is still largely regarded as a taboo in US culture. While the walls are coming down, whether you think they should or not, I'm pretty sure wizards is trying to make a buck. And the last thing they really need is people yelling at them for going out and addressing this 'taboo' topic. This happened, as someone said earlier, with the use of the demon creature subtype. Took them years to finally add it back. Time marched on I assume. Maybe one day they'll make a transgender character, but Domri Rade is clearly not it.
Sidenote: someone is probably hellbent on saying something along the lines of 'Blah blah shouldn't be a taboo. Blah Blah you're close-minded for saying that.'
Well sir/madam/sidam you'd be wrong.

Exactly this. It's the Disney Principle. They won't do something "controversial" if it means it affects their money.
I am pretty sure in like the fourth paragraph they refer to him as a guy because they say "his" abilities... He's not a transvestite. That would be kind of creepy, don't you think? Plus, you can see his chest, and I don't see any boobs. So if you would have actually read the article you would have known he is a young teenage thug. Not a creepy transvestite.

Single post count by the author... I sense strong feelings, and a thread destined for a lock.
