I want to make undying happen over and over. I'm not very smart. the best I could come up with was:
mindcrusher + hex parasite + any sac outlet.
I thought about Geralf's Messenger, but unless you have tons of mana you're just going to do a bit of damage and then have to take the same amount to use hex parasite.
that's just the best I could come up with in standard. what is a viable non-standard combo?
I thought of some other dumb things, but there has to be something cool.
Loyal Cahar on the other hand... dies as a human (no counters) comes back as a zombie (no counters). Then dies as a zombie and comes back as a human (w/ counters). Then dies and comes back as a zombie (no counters) repeat until you get tired of doing it.
@Woocls: I'm pretty sure that a transformed creature with undying would come back as it's transformed form, not it's original form... I might be wrong though, seems like a somewhat decent combo.....
FOR 5BBBBWWR COST!
It I wanted infident damage...
I would just do Lich + Gringrim + Bloodling Keeper + Heartless Summoning
that would only be 5UUBBBBB total
I honestly think the Triskellon + Mikaeu, because it would the best combo... 9BBB = infident Damage, which is far easier to get then infident attack... and much more conventional. (not in standard of course)
I am the Outcast and the Loner of this world,
I don't need the strength of others to survive,
I only need to rely upon myself to stay alive...
The trust you have in others, is not a strength,
The trust you have is a liability and a weakness,
While others will fail you, you will never fail yourself...
While the Pack might be stronger than the Loner,
The Loner is still stronger then anyone in the Pack,
The only strength you can rely upon is your own...

Nope, they come back in the original form unless the card specifically says that it comes back transformed. Just like if they leave play and come back.
Still though.... three color mana color base, of which their pretty heavy color on the cards you use... UB seems a little more relyable then RWB....
expecially when 1B can be played at any time after turn 2

Noone was saying make a janky combo that can be easily played turn 3... Besides... you'd need 6 mana just to cast Mikaeus. So, it's conceivable that you'd have access to the mana you need to cast all 3 parts of your infinite combo by that point. This isn't a spike type discussion, it's about breaking cards and then finding ways to make them playable.
Total cost: 5U + cost of whatever undying card you're using. You can do it turn 3 via:
1: Birds of Paradise
2: Ashnod's Altar
3: Sage + Young Wolf
Though, it probably won't do you much good if you can't use the cards you draw. in the end, you can have up to 8 mana to play with if you sac all of your combo piece creatures after you're done with them, up to 2 of it colored mana if you sac'd the Birds to play the Sage.
Biggest problem is that Altar is only legal in the older formats + EDH.
Another much more convoluted combo would be Phyrexian Altar/Thermopod + Pawn of Ulamog + Ion Storm + any undying creature. Sac the creature to the Altar/Thermopod for R, it comes back with a token. Sac the token for 1, use the 1R to use Ion Storm, then repeat. It takes 4 cards, but does unlimited damage and is modern legal (with Thermopod).
Note that Loyal Cathar + Mikaeus doesn't work as well as you'd think.
Loyal Cathar revives at the beginning of next end step, meaning that you can only run one loop per turn. Mikaeus with Persist creature, Bloodied Ghost, etc. doesn't have this problem.

They do go well with the graft mechanic. Not when you play them but when they come back. Add a little Proliferate and a few Cytoplast Root-Kin and let the hilarity ensue. Now that I think about it Mr. Roots third ability is a nice way of having infinite blockers.

Mikaeus,Hex parasite,Wurmcoil engine,sac outlet = lot of 3/3 deathtouch and lifelink generating.
Well anything that cancels out that +1/+1 counter on the undying creature. Would the -1/-1 given by heartless summoning do it? Anything that gives a -1/-1 counter will do to
Swing, Sac to Dias, play Oil, repeat. Tons of incremental advantage and halves their life total, making Vorapede even more scary.
On top of that, Oil doubles as slow yet versatile removal while simultaneously adding 10 psuedo-life. Well, against anything that isn't infect.dec or has "Phantasmal" in its name
It's a pretty basic list that doesn't really need the oil combo to be threatening, considering its just Gb stompy with a little reach/card parity. The general idea could look something like this:
mindcrusher + hex parasite + any sac outlet.

Kitchen Finks and Ashnod's Altar get you infinite life and infinite mana in this way.

I love it in all it's unpractical glory.
I'm sure you can think of something by yourself.

You mean, the Loyal Cathar that has the creature type "Human" and is therefore unaffected by Mikaeus the Unhallowed?
this would resolve wrong... hexmage would be dead before it got to remove it's own counters. Thus, it doesn't come back

This is really neat. I might have to brew around this application. Use that undying spell and it will be awesome.
About Mindslaver rulings:
Mikaeus,Hex parasite,Wurmcoil engine,sac outlet = lot of 3/3 deathtouch and lifelink generating.
Nope, it doesn't add a counter.
I suppose Harbinger of Night would, though, or Carnifex Demon or Midnight Banshee. None of those three can do it unlimited times per turn, though.
Wandering Mage? Not really worth it...
Culling Dias + Glistening Oil + Anything with Undying ends the game in a hurry.

4 Strangleroot Geist
4 Vorapede
4 Birds of Paradise
4 Rampant Growth
4 Glistening Oil
4 Green Sun's Zenith
4 Tragic Slip
2 Grim Backwoods
2 Buried Ruin
2 Evolving Wilds
4 Woodland Cemetery
4 Swamp
10 Forest
As an aside, Black Sun's Zenith plays rather nicely with Undying as well. Might be worth looking in to.
