I'm glad this thread exists, it seems it will provide endless hilarity as people try to grasp at straws while trying to justify their unability to adapt to change.
I don't remember people complaining about Zendikar being underpowered like SoM when it first came out and replaced all the cards in the Lorwyn blocks. People adapted to Zendikar change just fine. When Zendikar came out the prices were nowhere near as bad as SoM . Guess why? Zendikar's rares were actually worth something, not just the mythics. And Zendikar had many more playable cards than SoM, that's why people didn't complain back then when Lorwyn rotated.
Believe it or not some people can evaluate when limited mechanics like levelers and metalcraft aren't good enough for competitive standard, or just testing them against post rotation U/W, RDW or valakut. Poison and metalcraft looks hilariously bad vs RDW, being so slow until they get online without legendary mox (metalcraft) or reliant on pumps (against a deck with so much spot removal (poison).
This card will be the worst rare in RTR and less remembered than skaab ruibator in three months. It struggles to be on the same power level as mass of ghouls, even in limited.
That its not simply "not good enough for competitive", or underpowered. But that this is offensively bad, the real stinker tier.
Still, my best evaluation is that its approximately on the same power level as a 4/4 for 4 vanilla beater.
This set is not that special, the return to artifact theme is not welcome since everyone was asking an enchantment-based set or something less.. broken. I myself had quit playing magic since Scars were about to be released - and I don't feel like playing magic this season. Mirrodin's story is cold to me, not addicting. Remember the older days, when Mirrodin 1.0 was released? A lot of people have quit. Well, magic goes up and down, and as it is now it's too much bitter for my taste.
I think I agree with this. This set is too bitter for your tastes. I like it fine.
*metalcraft-heavy environment making other decks difficult to appear.
Refer to the answer directly above.
Maybe this is just one giant troll thread and we've all been fooled. However, I don't think the people in this thread are quite clever enough to do that. All in all, this thread is about people who don't know how to make the best of what is given to them. Don't worry fellas, in a few months you'll be able to netdeck again and start complaining about something else.

You may want to go back and look at the threads - there were TONS of "Well, I guess I'm not buying packs" or "I'll just be buying packs for treasures" posts back then.
It happens EVERY block, even some sets like Coldsnap have inspired this nonsensical Chicken Little'ing.
The really sad thing is there's plenty of powerful cards in the set that you people are missing because of the old "high" of Alara - tying your ability to succeed at a game to a single set/block just shows you to be a weak player honestly.
(And regarding your testing - it's flat out wrong - I was lazy with my testing and left the alara block cards in while doing my opposition testing and I've already found a few diamonds in the rough I'm working on refining to become competitive with those decks having extremely powerful options that aren't being replaced (i.e. RDW losing the Unearth critters))

I somehow doubt that it was even half as bad as the SoM complaints in numbers. People at least needed fetches, and remember at the beginning when Ob nixilis went for about 20$ and Cobra 30? Even Emeria Angel was worth at least 4. There might have been some complainers but NOWHERE near as bad as for SoM.

Look at me! I can bold words and use CAPSLOCK to emphasize my point! Hopefully I can trick people into ignoring that I completely have no evidence in my post to back up my claims if I make it look fancy enough.
That's just the thing iPot... I am not a tournament player in the slightest. I'm a regular joe like yourself that enjoys the casual side of things. This set just doesn't speak to me, but yet I've spent the last 12 months shocked that no one would see the casual melting pot that was ZEN/WWK/ROE. i'm still going to buy singles. I'm just not thrilled at the idea of buying boxes for a set that I PERSONALLY feel holds very minimal value to the kind of deck building I enjoy.
I can't say that there has been a set printed to date that I did not get enjoyment from. Even(especially) Legions. I am a crazy amount of Timmy, and Scars has a lot of appeal for me, and not just for the elf lord. I've wanted to be able to use Poison for so long its insane. When I found out it really was coming back in Scars I already knew I was going to be excited about the set. Green is my favorite color to play, and seeing Ezuri's Brigade made my year. I cannot wait to use this card in a deck. I've always considered 5/5's for 4 to be wonderful, the fact this dude is essentially an 8/8 for 4 I'm salivating.
And, as others have mentioned, this whole block was designed around a single story. This set is supposed to show you the basics of whats going on in Mirrodin. We have some elves fighting against the Vedalken. Geth is back and has a whole body with Glissa and Slobad nowhere to be seen or heard of. Khemba seems to be the reincarnation of Raksha but determined to make her name important for its own reasons. If thats not awesomesauce waiting to happen I don't know what is. And of course the Phyrexians are starting to show up. Sure they(Phyrexia, infect creatures) aren't very strong yet, what product is ever perfect in its 1.0 version? The fact they have Skittles and Petri this early is a sign of good things to come for them my friend.
Plus this set seemed to get a bunch of cycles out of the way. Mirrodin had its own cycles (myr, talismans, towers, artifact lands, replicas, spellbombs is all I can think of but there are more) and each "tribe" seemed to have its own identity one way or another. Green had "Pro: Artifacts" White was good w/ equipment Black had "+1/+0 for each artifact you control" Red made mana and sacced artifacts and Blue was "Look what I can do w/ Affinity guyz!" But Mirrodin, the plane, was itself a lot more structured at that time. Now everything is all a tussle and everyone is divided.
But back to the story thing, no one knows what the real threat to the plane is yet. No one is ready to defend against it, or to attack it. This is important in the grand scheme of things(people complaining about removal, or lack thereof). Soon someone is gonna take notice of whats going on, ☺☺☺☺ will hit the fan and everyone is gonna start swinging for the fences.
This set, on its own, is underwhelming. But this block, as a whole, is going to be fun.
I can't say that there has been a set printed to date that I did not get enjoyment from. Even(especially) Legions. I am a crazy amount of Timmy, and Scars has a lot of appeal for me, and not just for the elf lord.
Well I guess you're one of those folks that they can do no wrong in the eyes of. I wasn't a huge fan of a handful of sets over the last 10 years, but I love the game no matter what they throw at me. I don't play Standard so a poor quality new set does little for me but give me less cards to buy that time around.
To each their own, and I certainly have LOVED sets others have hated.
I for one like the set. Nothing ridiculously overpowered, and some really neat Johnnylicious cards (yay Mimic Vat!). Still, the set's not weak either; Elspeth and Koth will both see standard play (Venser hopefully too after Zen block rotates), and the set has at least a dozen excellent utility cards at common/uncommon. Scars doesn't quite have the power of Shards/Zendikar block, but that doesn't make it a poor block.
"what do you mean I have to think and be creative!? Bulls--t! I quit! I'm going to go back to playing pokemon!"
sorry the set isn't 250 cards that make your pro tour replica decks even more awesome instantly. But don't worry, take a beak for a month or two. I guarantee by the time you're cutting into a delicious 40 pound turkey they'll be plenty of decks other people thought up that you'll be able to build and play with.

So I bolded one word. I didn't make my entire post look retarded. The person who said there were many complaints for Zendikar didn't go fishing for year old posts to back up his claim. I told him good reasons why Zendikar was a better set than SoM (at least value-wise). Wasn't it up to him to prove me wrong?

So because he didn't back it up, it's okay for you to do the same?
I may be the only one, however I found it quite difficult to decide on which cards to remove from my deck at the prerelease. Often I have difficulting putting in cards. This time was the opposite.
Seeing poison again is a nice throwback to the days of olde. Suq'Ata Assassin, Marsh Viper et al, I missed you. They did the mechanic some good by mixing wither into it as well. Very flavourful delivery in that sense.
The storyline bit sort of throws me off a bit but overall the set's not too shabby. Far better than Rise and Worldwake could ever hope for.
The only reason why Zendikar sold so well initially was largely due to a) the "priceless treasures" inserted, and b) the fetchlands. Take the former out of the equation and suddenly it's not so hot afterall.
I argued that the fetches were something everyone wanted, good rares that made cracking boxes worth it. And that mythics like Cobra and Ob Nixilus started at 20-30 a pop. Do I have to dig up the Zendikar price thread or do I rightfully assume that the people who played a year ago know I'm right?

Complaining about card prices accomplishes nothing. Read some Medina articles, learn to trade better, don’t act like the only way to do ANYTHING in this game is to price out decks and buy every single you ever need.
"Man, this set sucks. The power level is so much lower. This adds nothing to Standard and all the big money cards are mythics. And what's worse is it's knocking out a strong block. Even after one set I know this is going to be the worst block ever."
Any idea where I heard that line for the first time? When Shards of Alara was released. There were a number of people *****ing that the power level was too low, that nothing was going to see play, that ultimately the block was all trash. Now I'm hearing the exact same malarkey about the set that's making Shards block rotate out. Hilarious.
Here's a thought: how's about we wait until the set is actually on sale, then wait for some Japanese guy to make a Pro Tour-level deck (since I don't believe those of you complaining about the set's Standard-level power have actually built your own decks in ages), then see how your opinion changes when you decided to bring net-decked Poison or Myr to your next FNM.
As for casual/EDH and such, I'd wait until the rest of the block rolls out to write it off entirely. I know not every set appeals to everyone, but I've got a feeling there'll be something here that'll appeal to you more once you've got a better idea where they're going with this.
One of my favorite things about Magic is the constantly shifting STD environment. I get tired of the same thematic elements and love to see how cards from different planes will interact. I never judge a set on the power or usefulness of its card, but rather what types of themes it brings to Standard. I loved how the chaotic nature of the shifting Alara plane played well into the adventure/discovery/unstable terrain of Zendikar.
I'm not gonna say they can do no wrong. There are plenty of things that have seen print that I wish had never happened. I wish like Hel they would stop printing so much gorram GY hate and let us reanimator fans have SOME love. I mean jeez, every color got a new leyline except black? Really? Thats ☺☺☺☺ing gay bro. But each set that gets printed has something in it I want for one reason or another, and so I get something from each set regardless of it the set itself is considered "powerful" or even "good."
the biggest problem with the set is that maro is a terrible designer. he's so full of himself and his own percieved genius, he fails to see that he's bad at making mtg cards. he over intellectualizes everything, and when you do that, you get crap sets like som, that may look somewhat interesting on a philosophical level, but aren't fun for players to play with.
I always buy a box of the newest set. This time I instead preordered 4x of the C/UC and bought a bunch of .50 rares. I get to play with Scars for a total investment of about $60. I will have playsets of almost every rare I care about and I can trade for the mythics once they inevitably tank. I think people are hating on this set because of a lack of value. THIS MEANS YOU GET TO PLAY FOR LESS MONEY! What is bad about that?
So basically, don't buy packs or boxes and instead just enjoy the new cards. Understand that the new mechanics are not going to be fully powered until the other two sets in SoM block come calling. Of course Metalcraft isn't good yet! 2/3rds of the metal you are going to craft is still on the cutting room floor at WotC.
In summation.....Star Trek wins a prolonged naval battle against superior, yet less technologically advanced, numbers, with Picard leading the assault, while Kirk takes your soul by laying out Solo and probably his manservant Chewy as well, before impregnating and ditching your Princess.
"Man, this set sucks. The power level is so much lower. This adds nothing to Standard and all the big money cards are mythics. And what's worse is it's knocking out a strong block. Even after one set I know this is going to be the worst block ever."

Now I'm hearing the exact same malarkey about the set that's making Shards block rotate out. Hilarious.
Yeah, you didn't hear that line with shards, because shards mythics were fine.
Shards of Alara WAS weak. Do you really have that poor a memory? The power of the whole block basically came from alara reborn's cascade mechanic. Path to exile was 5$ because no one bothered to open conflux. Heck, even elspeth took a long, long time to catch on.
It pretty much did add nothing to standard until the block was complete and a ton of faerie hate cards were printed.
There really are quite a few of these threads, aren't there...?
I'd rate the set 3 out of 5. Its not as powerful as I originally thought, but I like it in general.
I just did a quick review of the pre-order prices for some singles and there are four, yes, FOUR, cards valued at $20 or higher. Three of them are the planeswalkers, of course, however the fourth is Molten-Tail Masticore.
That's pretty intense if you ask me. So I don't know where you folks are getting the idea that the set is bad both practically AND financially. Higher than that of Rise overall (all of the overpriced Eldrazi, save for All is Dust, have all dropped. Watch All is Dust drop significantly after Shards leaves and Scars is considered legal).
Well, I am one of the players that bought more Magic with SoM then any other set before. I have already drafted and played in various SoM Sealed and it's not even released. I havent heard anyone in any of those events say that the set was boring and a failure.
Sure, we found out that infect is really good in sealed and draft. But every set has cards you should play or burn. You gotta remember infect creatures usually have low P/T. go 1 for 1 and block them. Your creature will sure die on the long term, but it's still better then letting them through.
As for the pricing of cards. It is a trading card game, just trade stuff, especially if they don't cost ☺☺☺☺, they will be easier to trade for less. Sure you won't be able to easily trade the Planeswalkers, but the SoM walkers are not ''must have'' compared to walkers like Jace or even Garruk. Venser and elspeth are only good in precise archetypes. As for Koth, he sure is good when you play red, but it's a minimal part of the game.
All this thread told me is that some people don't like stuff that other does like. Welcome to something we call ''the society'', Magic won't ever die because of a set that is bad compared to others. People will simply adapt to it, and someday, it'll be gone and replaced by something better.
Stop crying and adapt.

All this thread told me is that some people don't like stuff that other does like. Welcome to something we call ''the society'', Magic won't ever die because of a set that is bad compared to others. People will simply adapt to it, and someday, it'll be gone and replaced by something better.
Stop crying and adapt.
