I love the fact Myrs, Wither, and poison are back all in the same set <3 makes me happy =3 Not to mention the Anvil and so much other stuff in this set. Simply....one of my favorite sets so far(Granted..I joined about the time Worldwake came out haha)

Considering we have 88 cards(Aside: can we stop counting the basic lands as 'spoiled' in every spoiler? It always gives me a letdown to find the 25-32 cards we normally start the spoiler with is only really 5-12 cards), it's too early to tell..wait until we've seen the full set/played with the full set/extensively tested the full set, with all of it's follow-up sets/played with the next few years' worth of sets so we can see its impact, then decide if it's a good set or not. While we do see these worst set/best set threads every single time, there's always someone who wants to adopt a 'wait and see' attitude. I'm interested in when YOU think is a good time to decide a set is good, bad, or middle of the road--and what makes it so, to you?
For me, it's not too soon to begin thinking about whether it's good or bad--while we have almost seen less than half of a set's cards, we've 'probably' seen most of the themes--Metalcraft, Proliferate, Infect, Myr-or-Entity (C'mon, I dare you to use that, Wizards), etc. While I like some, I dislike others--Metalcraft being something that doesn't sit all that well with me. Billed as the 'fixed Affinity', it still seems to suffer from Affinity's main drawback--exceptionally linear design. If there's enough reasonable artifact destruction, you could have your deck turned "on" or "off" by your opponent's removal/lack thereof--just like Affinity.
I'm also thinking it might be time to rein in Planeswalkers via effective, common removal that can affect Planeswalkers or creatures--something in the mold of Putrefy or Mortify, for example. We seem to be getting to a state where we'll always have 5 Planeswalkers in the main set, & 4-5+ more in every block, leading to Planeswalker-heavy, always-expensive "Superfriends"-style decks. We still could see this type of answer in Scars, but I'll be a little disappointed if we don't see something better than we have already seen in that area.
What makes a set good/bad/indifferent to me is a combination of effect on the metagame(causing dramatic shifts is good, but having little/no effect or completely invalidating all existing decks is bad), and the balance between overpowered/underpowered cards for effects. Wizards has made good strides forward with interblock design; I'd like to see that continue, and perhaps become a little less obvious (how many people don't think M11 's Steel Overseer didn't dramatically telegraph the artifact-ness of Scars?)
I think a set is only ever as good as the amount of fun the designers had putting it together. Unpopular sets like Kamigawa and Coldsnap were disappointing because the designers were trying too hard to shoehorn things into the sets because they wanted to take advantage of some element of their demographic or make things conform more to what maketing says people like. When they make a set like Invasion or, I think, Scars, the design is more based on intuition about what's fun rather than relying on polls and surveys and marketing information. And that results in a more genuine-feeling set, which makes it a lot more fun for me.
Wit's End is the PERFECT answer to your opponent's Monomania however.
Just hold on to your Wit's End when they Monomania, so you can Wit's End them on your next turn!!!
I think this is fairly reminiscent of the "Jace Battles" we have seen in past standards.. My guess is we will soon witness the great Monomania-Wit's End battles.
Well, I'm glad to see this thread before the "Why SOM is the worst ever" thread that will pop up.
I'm excited about poison's return, but everything else is boring me to tears. I've played since IA... so... I've already seen:
- stupidly good colorless blocks (Urza's block, Mir 1.0, ROE)
- white weenie equip like three times
- Same Mirrodin stuff, Myr, spellbombs, Affinity... err.. metalcraft... err... having "lots of artifacts is good" mech
- Imprint as card disadvantage when it gets nuked
It's weird, I'm a casual player that likes most everything! It's aight, though. I'll buy some poison stuff to redo my old-school poison deck, but probably not much else this block as I feel I've seen or played it all before.
EDIT: Oops, never mind my first point, I see that thread now.
I wouldn't say it's great but its decent. Mindslaver and Stoic Rebuttal are the only cards I consider personally exciting. There have been some interesting cards, but not really my style. Hopefully, the rest of the set brings some good removal and/or amazing finisher. Removal's preferred, though. Mindslaver/Prototype Portal, Jace, Manlands, and Sphinx of Jwar Isle are decent enough finishers.
i quit playing with the first mirrodin, so its only appropriate that i've quit with the second. i hate that the rares are designed only with limited in mind. when i buy a pack i expect to get my $4 worth. i shouldn't be playing the lotto. i should be getting bare minimum $4 in cards. yet almost everything spoiled so far screams limited fodder... except the mythics. why should i buy a pack? ever.
use to buy a box of every new set. this is the first one i'll just buy singles for and not bother with any packs at all.
I love the set so far, and I'm glad to have this thread in which to discuss it
I like the flavor, I like how the draft/sealed possibilities look, and I'm excited to play some of the rares and themes. I also don't feel completely locked out of the set by excess mythic nonsense. I'd rather see the mythic costs be locked up by planeswalkers I might or might not want to play, rather than in all of the decent cards in a set (cough cough M11 cough cough RoE).
Who's saying that the mythics are going to be the only reason to get this set? There are only a few mythics even worth playing. Eslepth, Koth, Venser, Skithiryx, Mindslaver, Mox Opal, and maybe Sword of Body and Mind.
Elspeth might be a little bit expensive, but her price will shoot down pretty quickly. Koth and Venser are only good in monored and blue/white respectively, so they won't be too expensive, just like Sarkhan the Mad. Skithiryx will only be good in infection decks, which could make him expensive because infect could be fun to play. Mindslaver is $4 now, don't complain later if it costs you $40 for a playset. Mox Opal will be cheap, as it's only good as a 1-of in some decks that play Trinket Mage. The Sword could prove to be good, but I think there are better options for equipment out there. If it is used, it will be as a 1-of in decks with Stoneforge Mystic.
You see, mythics are just not the big selling point of this set. There are lots of good rares that could see constructed play. White has Sunblast Angel, Tempered Steel, and Leonin Arbiter. Blue has Grand Architect and Shape Anew. Black has Hand of the Praetors, Memoricide, and Painful Quandary. Red has Kuldotha Phoenix and Tunnel Ignus. Green has Ezuri's Brigade and Putrefax. Colorless rares include Chimeric Mass, Grindclock, Kuldotha Forgemaster, Myr Battlesphere, Prototype Portal, Semblance Anvil, and the dual lands.
We don't even have to get into the great metalcraft cards, infect cards, and myr. Believe me, there will be a ton of cards in this set that will be useful in constructed.
I really like infect and the whole idea of bringing poison back in general, although I fear it may be a bit too good after seeing the new lord. But generally, yeah, I like it a lot so far. I think they could have made Koth a little cooler, but other than that, everything else seems pretty good. It seems a thousand times more interesting than the Zendikar set.

Usually when a new set comes out I try to add new cards to old existing decks, but it's just not possible with Scars because all cards are either infect, metalcraft or colorless weird cards like myr. It's almost as xenophobic as Kamigawa's soulshift and arcane mechanics.
About the only thing you can put in old decks are the planeswalkers and random sideboard cards (the leonin arbiter and tunnel ingus). I much prefer Zendikar where mechanics like landfall can be put in other decks beside decks made to maximize landfall. Other broad mechanics like multikicker are great too. There are some great stand alone cards (the new dual cycle, new -4/-4 removal) but they're few and far between.
You can make new infect and myr decks, but they don't play well with pre-Scars card either, so they'll be as linear as vampire decks, i.e almost pre-made by Wizards. Say I play mono red now, it's just not worth watering down the deck with artifacts to put new goblin 1 drop or galvanic blast.
This card will be the worst rare in RTR and less remembered than skaab ruibator in three months. It struggles to be on the same power level as mass of ghouls, even in limited.
That its not simply "not good enough for competitive", or underpowered. But that this is offensively bad, the real stinker tier.
Still, my best evaluation is that its approximately on the same power level as a 4/4 for 4 vanilla beater.
So far this set looks like a win/win for wizards. It looks to be a fairly decent limited set. There looks to be money in the set for all the dealers. And there is seems to be a fair amount of constructed playables (so far spoiled). I can see why anyone would not like the set.
i like it alot so far, but i've been putting far too much effort into making decks around cards like precursor golem when half the set isn't even out. i've kind of cooled down a bit because i just want to see what the rest of the set offers and instead of scanning ebay for playsets of Hand of the Praetors, i'm just gonna freaking wait to see what i want to build based on what i draft at the prerelease and release events. i only play casual, so this will be my first sanctioned event (i'm a little nervous) and i've also never ordered a box..
i'm mostly excited for the new mechanics. as of right now and according to the SOM orb, by my count we still have:
13 more instances of infect
12 more of metalcraft
9 more of golem (for a precursor deck, haha)
1 more of proliferate
so i'm hoping we get some even better stuff soon.
also, this is my first true spoiler season, does anyone know what percent of the set is spoiled by prerelease? just wondering..
It's usually always a disappointment when looking at new sets, because they offer nothing new for Legacy (the only format I play competitively in...), but with the release of a few really good/cheap artifact cards, I'm glad that Affinity may be receiving the all too needed protective boost it needed in the form of Etched Champion. It might actually top 16 again, once the rest of the set comes out. Who knows, there might be something new that may make Affinity branch into 2 trees? Kind of what Tarmogoyf did for Burn decks....
Anywho, *raises glass of champaine* LETS HAVE A TOAST TO A NEW BEGINNING! HUZZAH!

100% of it should be spoiled by then. The product needs to reach the stores a few days before prerelease, and if stores have it there is going to be someone who opens it. And if someone's cracking packs before the entire set is released, they'll be sure to let the internet know what they find.
Sorry posted my original comment in the wrong thread.
But overall I am loving Scars. So many different nutso plays that, I cannot think of them all.

On average, you get less than what you spent buying the pack. And every set only has a few chase rares and mythics.
Also, it's not possible to have a set where you can open packs and profit. If a set has a lot of power rares, there will be increased demand for the product and sellers will raise the price.
And buying packs IS lotto. It has been so since magic began. Also, I've yet to see a set without a good chunk of limited fodder.
