You can't have broken stuff everywhere. Dragon's Maze is very well designed and (appears) to be fairly balanced. I'm excited for the crazy brews I can try to come up with with the cards in here.
love DM myself, has a ton of cards for a few of my pauper decks, love it. great flavor and art too. complainers are always gonna complain and when a card comes out for their "netdeck" deck they copied to be like everyone else, they will jump on the bandwagon and buy it singing its praise. sheep haha lying sheep who will still buy packs and go to prerelease's, gotta love these people.
Maybe all the cards just haven't sunk in for me yet, but this set actually looks complex as hell for such a small set. This makes me super excited, because I love thinking about interactions between multiple cards and figuring out synergies as I'm playing.
It seems as though there isn't much removal, and they want the games to go longer. Which is cool, because it will encourage more weird synergy plays I'm thinking. I would absolutely value combat tricks slightly higher than you would normally, because it seems to me there will be a lot of stalled board-states.
EDIT: ^I'm talking about limited here.
Also, why do people expect modern/legacy/vintage staples out of every set? Those formats have huge cardpools, and I really don't want cards powerful enough to compete for space with Goyfs and Bobs and Jittes. And a lot of the people here complaining about how much better RTR was were the same people complaining that it had a lot of dumb vanilla creatures.
I have enjoyed all three of these sets, the standard environment is healthy, and I haven't had this much fun playing magic in years.
I have neither the skill to correctly and accurately analyze this set in the context of current and future formats after 12 hours of exposure, nor the hubris to delude myself into believing that I do.

@The Last Storm Crow: "The only sets to not have such a thread on this forum were Ravnica, Saviors, and M11, if my memory serves."
Saviors? As in, Saviors of Kamigawa?? As in, The Worst Set Since Prophecy???
By the way, I like DGM a lot better than GTC.
It might not have been Saviors, but I know it was one of the sets in the Kamigawa block.
Okay, I'm going to try to be open minded about this set.
This morning, I went to the mother ship and went through every single card. Most left me feeling "meh" about them. Some made me feel, "okay, not bad. Maybe even playable." But I can't think of more than one or two cards where I said, "Okay, this is a must have."
So what am I missing? What are the cards in this set that are definitely going to find their way into Standard Constructed? Usually Metamorph goes to the Standard forum with his "picks" from a set (not sure when) but I'd love to hear some opinions from you guys.
What's going to be a definite?
Off the top of my head, I'd say the Skylasher and that zombie that allows you to draw a card if your hand is empty.
Just looking at the block as a whole, there are a few things missing that I personally would have liked to see, like a Lhurgoyf with Scavenge, or a Simic Leviathan.
That said, there are also a few cards in here that I'm really excited to play with (specifically Exava, Ral Zarek, Bred for the Hunt, Gruul War Chant, Nivix Cyclops, Plasm Capture, Unflinching Courage, Zhur-Taa Druid, and Dragonshift).
It seems like relatively few cards at first, but then I remember that it's a small set.

... AAAAAAAAND I was wrong
I think the split cards were a bad idea. Because of Fuse, they tacked on +1 mana to the cost of both sides (with a couple exceptions). There's only a couple sides worth playing in all. But that has largely been the case with split cards, they can so easily over shadow their 'stand-alone' variant.
I'm siding with the rest of the naysayers here, this set is weak, but we should remember that Magic is 49% standard, 50% limited, and 1% every other format. Feel free to debate that break-down.
Well, MegaMorphling is a near-certain control finisher. Blood Baron is a monster in midrange, immune to most removal and capable of outracing Obzedat, Thragtusk, and every other threat in standard. Exava will be the new Hellrider come rotation. Ral Zarek is an absolute toolbox who fits fairly well into either midrange or control shells running those colors. Voice of Resurgence provides a ton of pressure for aggro; he's no $35 chase mythic, but he's potentially better than Champion of the Parish, which is no laughing matter. Plasm Capture is a wait-and-see; the fact is, Mana Drain is a really powerful effect and someone is going to find a way to make it hurt. Zhur-Taa Shaman is a pressure-applying mana dude that can swing for 2 or ping every turn, and he makes it far easier to reliably get the casting trigger for Rakdos LOR. Renounce the guilds is another piece in the puzzle of a control removal suite. Possibility Storm is an underrated control hoser that completely destroys X-spells and counters and makes removal sketchy at best. Advent of the Wurm is ridiculously efficient even without flash. Council of the Absolute is an enigma card that could really break a control mirror. Deadbridge Chant is a better Staff of Nin for BG decks. Drown in Filth is a great removal spell for reanimator. Gaze of Granite is a nonwhite board wipe that can be tweaked to only hit your opponent. Lavinia is capable of stopping an aggro rush in its tracks, and can't be killed by any of the removal in Naya or Gruul, short of a bloodrush onto a nonred creature. Master of Cruelties has one of the most powerful effects that has ever been printed on a creature. Obzedat's Aid is an effect that has never seen print before, and could very well be incredibly powerful. For Esper, Reap Intellect is an in-color Rakdos' Return on crack. Ruric Thar is incredibly difficult to deal with profitably. Sire of Insanity says to control, "kill me instantly or lose". Viashino Firstblade is a hasty 4/4 for 3, at least on the first turn, which puts it among the best red three-drops that aren't Minotaur Wizards. Warleader's Helix may not be the real Helix, but it is still not bad in a low-removal format. Warped Physique is probably the best kill spell that Esper has in Standard. For those playing the colors, Woodlot Crawler is a strong sideboard option. Beck is modern playable, no questions asked. Armed//Dangerous enables an aggro alpha strike. Catch is Zealous Conscripts on the cheap, and is constructed worthy. Far//Away is one of the most versatile kill cards available; ditto for Turn//Burn. Both could easily see Standard. Wear//Tear is one of the most versatile sideboard cards for RW, and can easily become a two-for-one.
I don't guarantee that all of these cards will see constructed play; if I had to guess, I would say about half if not a bit more than that. However, there are plenty of playable cards in DGM.
there is only one card from this set i feel i must have and that is the Debt to the Deathless and the only reason i want that is so i can run a second Exsanguinate in my EDH deck

Your sig is about someone saying Desecration Demon is bad. Time has proven them correct. Not sure what you're trying to be snarky about here. I'd update your sig.
Totally missing the point. I know the demon is not a good card. I didn't really expect to see it in any T2 deck of relevance. What I'm pointing out is the inflated and unnecessary hyperbole which is his trademark for all his posts: The latest released set is always 'the worst ever', the latest card spoiled is always 'the worst ever' and Magic's design apparently doggedly refuses to alter by an inch the trajectory from its free-fall plunge into the vilest filth.
No.
Ah but of course you'd defend him; he's championing your own feelings towards this set.

Do you understand that the added flexibility and variables /have to/ add to the mana cost of those effects? Otherwise, there would be simply no reason to ever play the non-split version of those effects over the split ones? That said, there a bunch of properly and cheaply costed sides of these spells: Beck, Armed, Catch, Dirty, Breaking, Blood, Ready and Tear are fairly costed. Well and Trouble are the cheapest those effects have ever been.
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Awww, while Plasm Capture is certainly good, and going into more than one deck of mine, I was really hoping for a huge, rare, strange Simic stompy-thing from this set. Gatecrash focused on the evolve mechanic which was fine, but that was more focused on smaller creatures and tempo than raw stomp factor. Simic is the color combo of hugeness in creatures, and I am always hopeful for new impressive creatures to add to their ridiculously small stable of game-ending fatties (at the moment, Simic Sky Swallower is the only thing that fits the bill). Plus, something that was 6/6 or bigger would have been a great evolve trigger anyway!
Just feels like a missed opportunity is all. My Timmy-self cries.
PS: I do enjoy that uncommon Frog Mutant (Species Gorger). It may be a rehash of other creature effects, but I have an enters-the-battlefield simic deck that this guy is going straight into.

I like how ALL the uncommons are gold cards or split.
between all the cards, we should get an average 5-6 gold cards per booster pack. pretty good if you ask me. limited will be fun.
I think DGM lacks the integral charm that RTR and Gatecrash. Something is just a bit too bombastic and showy about this set. It disappoints me, because Ravnica is already bombastic enough and going to levels this high is simply just too ambitious. You can see that because of how many misses there are here. Overall bombast isn't going to work unless you fix the details. Point in case being guild spell type balances, guild champions, Fuse cards and perhaps forgetting the little things that made the original Ravnica so good.
Then again, I'm still happy with the set. It's certainly no Avacyn Restored anomaly, and Limited play looks incredibly interesting. Competitive cards are scattered throughout too.
And I took a look around the art too. There are some strange pieces there. Maw of the Obzedat is worth a mention. No clue.
That thrull reminded me of the first big boss on FF Tactics. Ah wth was it's name...began with a Q.
