Wow. That's really good! Only XRG for a double-striking creature that permanently pumps itself if necessary? I could see that in constructed. Not at XXRG, but DEFINITELY at XRG.
I think it is definitely constructed worthy. Say you need a way to give him trample, you can. If you happen to not have that and you need a mana dump at the end of your second main phase, you can do that because he is a threat all on his own. Seems like a great follow up to Huntmaster of the Fells so then you can flip it on turn 6 with a 6/6 double strike.
Too bad the ability is sorcery-speed. I sort of like him as a 4-drop in Naya midrange, but I don't think he is better than Huntmaster.
Probably a 5 drop so he can kill Thragtusk and beast tokens, and trades with a Restoration Angel. At 4 drop, he trades with all of the above. Of course, the mana-sink ability is great. All he needs is Trample...
now this is a mana-sink. seriously, if you have nowhere to spend your mana, why not spend it on a double striking dude. give him rancor and your good, he actually has a chance at constructed. the mana ability makes him 10 times better than all the other hydra's we have seen and is why he is playable.

Could work in RUG shell IMO, with Simic +1/+1 engine, doubling of the counters by Vorel, and drawing huge amount of cards by Zegana. Add to that some fancy removal spells, possibly Clan Defiance, Gyre Sage ramp... Perhaps Niv-Mizzet to use all this mana.
Wow, cool card for EDH and maybe even standard.
I mean, if this guy essentially makes it impossible to miss a mid-late part of our curve since he fulfills ANY drop spot.
Good call. In Jund, T4 Exava, T5 Hydra as a 3/3, swing 10. Exava has first strike and this has double strike, so good luck blocking. Only issue is those damned spirit tokens.
An 1/1 doublestriker for 3 or a 2/2 doublestriker for 4 doesn't gets me exited. Even Mirran Crusader saw little play and that's a lot more you get there for 3 Mana.
and that guy couldn't grow, now could he? this guy will turn any unused mana into a good resource when paired with rancor or wolf run.
It's sad that it is not splice mana for casting cost as well. I'd not hesitate to play him otherwise.
With doublestrike, each activation is virtually giving it a power of 2. It fits the mythicness in forcing you to find way to get rid of it (Not as deteriorating as a Wurmcoil Engine.
this card....I LIKE IT! Unsure if constructed worthy, perhaps when hunstmaster rotates out but there are good RG 4 drops in the format. I don't kno if this is good enough to displace any of them. The mana sink is great but it being sorcery speed hurts the card alot

THIS GUY. Goes right into my timmy-tastic Rosheen Meanderer deck. Seems pretty cool that if you need a blocker immediately, he doesn't have such bad value as a 1/1 doublestriker that you can pump later, if he survives. I just hope we get a nice ramp spell to go with him.
I always laugh during these spoilers where people say X is better from some set that is on the verge of going out of the format. This card I think will be good day one, but depending on what comes in M14, when primordial goes, and all the other cards people say are better are gone, this will see even more play.

Kinda a bummer to draw early, but the gnarliest late game creature to drop. Good thing he'll be uncounterable and sometimes have haste in this format.
Good point....5 drop slot is also crowded
Sadly, cards like these are usually not good in Constructed

not as much as other x spells are early game, cause he still can get bigger even if you cast him as a 1/1, then next turn make him a 3/3 and swing.

Any more of this, and Team Troll will be more than just a name.
