I find it funny that people are assuming every pack will have a rare that currently costs $10+. The reality is that it'll have fine fringe cards like Seismic Assault and Panoptic Mirror.
I assume each store will get 1 case of this product which is nothing and won't even put a dent in the demand for the money cards.
They can't print a set where everything is good. They have to put just enough good stuff in to ensure it sells out. Remember that they said draftable so it means they'll have some level of balance in the set composition. So assume 8-10 "good" rares/mythics, 8-10 "playable" commons and uncommmons and the rest is bad but not awful. After all, they have to do Modern Masters II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI and so on and so on...
Yes, all I've proven is that I know how to do roman numerals but this is just my opinion.
and why is that? you have a supply of something (in this case, shocks), and the market is hinting at that supply growing larger (reprints). now the demand is going up (because people want to play modern), and for a little while, things are cheaper because demand hasn't consumed the available supply yet. now, people want shocks for standard and likely modern, so demand has surpassed supply and prices are going up.
now look at the boosters. demand is already high for cards that will be in this. the prices wouldn't be increasing if they weren't selling at those prices. so now the market will get some supply (because it'll be a limited print run anyways) to wet its appetite. people who want those cards will buy them immediately, sustaining their prices. unless distributors (and the secondary market) actively make sure the packs are cheap and supply remains plentiful (both probably won't happen) they'll remain expensive. that's not even counting if there's more people wanting to get into modern, which would drive up demand on a limited product, which in the end will raise prices.

I speak in sarcasm because calling people ******* ******** is not allowed.
It's a shame that they're only going from 8th ed forward. I would've loved to see them reprint some cards that Modern doesn't have but sorely needs, like Force of Will.
In all honesty, it depends on the print run. If it is too small, it may do as much as effect as a FTV. I guess they are avoiding the backlash they got from Commander Arsenal by announcing early that it was a limited run. At 7.00 a pack, it seems steep, but we have to remind that there will be very little chaff [hopefully]. Situational cards may be, but not crap.
Drafting will be expensive, but at least it will be fun, knowing that is 90% of the chaff has been removed. You really only have to worry about whether the cards fits the deck you are building or is too valuable to pass.

If each store only got a case of this, pack prices would wind up being at least $40. The print run is presumably going to be akin to Coldsnap, which was another limited run expansion. Normal size printing, but only a single printing.

I disagree, Modern is fine without FoW.
I believe that in order for a card to be Modern-legal, it needs to be printed in a Standard set in the Modern Card frame, which is why for example Scavenging Ooze is not Modern playable even though it was recently printed.
Do you actually think stores will charge this much for them?
Limited + Awesome cards = expensive. Realistically they will be 15 - 20 bucks each and people will straight up pay that much. I WON'T you WON'T, but enough WILL. They are gonna get the most of these packs, which is sad because they could just get singles anyway. We are the 99%

My favorite flavor text: Time of Heroes
Feel free to tell me yours!
I don't agree with your reasoning. There are many precedents of boosters being price gouged. Boosters from Worldwake and Onslaught command a much higher price than less coveted sets. Boosters from very old and scarce sets with expensive cards, such as Alliances and Legends, are even more expensive.
Yes, but they were double the price, maybe. And zen boosters were all more valuable anyway (basics).
Remember, every booster contains a rare and 3 uncommons. Many uncommons played in Modern are quite pricey (Spell Snare, Remand, Spectral Procession, Kitchen Finks, Aether Vial, Steelshaper's Gift, Path to Exile, Merrow Reejerey, Imperious Perfect, ...). There are even a few commons that sell for $1-2. A few of them will inevitably included, and on average the boosters will contain a lot of value. Which is great, of course, but it will also lead to them being sold over MSRP.
Just as with RTR. The EV here is enormous. I don't see packs for more than $3.99 anywhere. It does of course matter how limited/unlimited the supply is, but we'll see.
I guess OP wants it to be 'keyworded' like "dies" was. What word would you replace ETB with though?
When Aegis Angel is born?
When Huntmaster of the Fells arrives?
When Kitchen Sphinx lands?
When Faerie Imposter busts in?
When Dread Cacodemon pops in?
When Malfegor shows up?

This won't happen unless Modern becomes more popular to people not already looking to join it. This requires either advertisement or a new incentive.

Take a look at the Modern banned list. Sword of the Meek. Hypergenesis. Green Sun Zenith. Dread Return. Dark Depths
The banned list keeps some of the stronger combos available to the card pool from running riot, but there would be absolutely nothing wrong with those combos if FoW was Modern-legal. In other words, the lack of FoW damages the variety of viable decks in Modern.
Not even slightly interested in this at $6.99. Hell at normal prices it would still be meh. I guess I'm the idiot for already having a job and goyfs/bobs/thoughtseize/fetches.
Too many people are in love with this product already. Give it up, modern is not expensive, also get a job.
Thanks for the advice, Dad.
A single tarmogoyf buys at least 2 weeks of groceries for one person. One, 1 mm x 4 cm x 7 cm piece of cardboard. 2 Weeks of groceries.
Zen Fetch's won't be reprinted as they were after Alara.
This is true, which is kind of a mistake. Zen fetches are climbing, and once everyone gets into Modern next summer, they're going to want a playset of each. Maybe two. This set should have gone through RoE.

WoTC, thank you for finally announcing the Modern format, an eternal format where everyone can participate.
I dunno if this has been mentioned already, but will these be sold in big-box stores? 'Cause if so, OH MY YES.
No. Think of this having about the same distribution as the From the Vault sets. The bigger your store, the more they'll get. But there won't be enough for everyone who plays there to get one.

I'd rather have the ban-list instead of FoW holding the entire format together and giving more reason to play blue.
Anyways, it doesn't really matter, since it's not getting reprinted here, and can only enter Modern if it's printed in a Standard legal set.
Curses. Ah, well, I just gotta hope that SCG or other online sites don't gouge the prices on these (or, failing that, just go way out of my way to drive the hour+ to the nearest LGS).
