You need another damage dealer, or a clear borad to do so with the Guildmage tho. I would have preffered taking damage then the stupid "target player WHO LOST LIFE THIS TURN" clause.
Then you forgot something important that shows up in reminder text (like Bloodchief Ascension) once in awhile: Damage causes loss of life. The "lost life" clause is more inclusive than just using the "took damage" clause that Bloodthirst uses, which is one of my gripes about an ability called Bloodthirst that doesn't care if you drainblood from another player.

People are so quick to call cards bad without even considering options of what they can do with them. Its as though a card needs to have 'you win the game' literally written on the card for it to be any good. It's pretty funny reading back to cards like Delver of Secrets, which was pretty heavily called unreliable, and not that good, when first spoiled.
The elemental is interesting and I'm interested in looking into what options there are in standard (and otherwise) that use cast triggers to get extra value from spells (that you can then exile or let resolve depending on what is better at the time).
I don't see the tools in standard to make the Elemental work, you either dumping to many cards or mana into something that dies to Abrupt Decay ect for it to be a build around card and i can't image what abomination in standard would play it without building around it. Unless something comes along in a later set. However the card has some really interesting possibilities in older formats with storm, replicate and Pyro Ascension to name a few.

Calling someone a Commie is flaming and must be stopped, but turning the word Conservative into a loaded pejorative and using it over and over again is perfectly acceptable.
I would venture to say that there will be an Izzet card somewhat like this
UR
Gain control of target instant or sorcery spell. You may choose new targets for that spell.
Commandeer is 7 mana. It'd be somewhat surprising (If hilarious) to see a 2 mana version, although at least this version is restricted to only instants and sorceries.

The wedding is over. Now it's time for the honeymoon.
The guildmage is really good. Fights through mana flood, decent body for the colours, importantly has the x/2 body. Tears apart weenies on the offence, able to deal extra damage to the opponent if you need to dump mana.
I think it will see constructed play if the appropriate colours are good enough.

Flying and Trample. Look at the upcoming meta game.
Detain: Doesn't affect the imps but totally ruins the demon.
Populate: So many creatures. Don't care.
Scavenge: Just gonna make my big hitter bigger than yours. Probably Lol Troll
Then we look at current cards. Gravecrawler just laughs. Just things like that.
1) You cast a spell. You then get priority.
2) You may then choose to exile the spell or not. If you do not, then...
3) You opponent gets priority. If your opponent passes priority without doing anything...
4) Your spell resolves.
It doesn't seem quite as good since you can't play a spell you have every intention of feeding to the elemental to try and draw out counters. I'm not sure that would ever come up though...
You know what's REALLY sweet. Desecrator Demon and the Imps actually work...TOGETHER! In the same deck! With....Heartless Summoning
edit: Still can't wait to see big Papa Rakdos and that "paincast" mechanic.

Might be too undercosted in my example but you get the idea.

I could think of a lot better things to do with enough mana to make that combo useful. Plus, you've just pumped everything into him so that he can get path to exiled.... congrats.
ahh yes, the 'dies to PtE' excuse for not playing creatures. I'll file that alongside dies to Dismember, Lightning Bolt, Gut Shot, Doom Blade...did I miss anything?
I think the Nivmagus is quite the awesome piece of tech. Try to cast a spell with it on the table. If it gets countered, eat it up. If it doesn't, let it resolve. Target a creature with a removal spell. If it grows/gets protection in response, eat up the spell
Ugh, Trostani will be very annoying to play against.
Oh, and of course another cruddy Rakdos card... :/ (in the visual spoiler)
The weird Izzet one-drop is amusingly good against counterspells. Oh, you want to counter that? Well, I'll exile it for two counters! lol
I think you read the card wrong its exile an instant or sorcery YOU CONTROL not just an instant or sorcery because that would be dumb (TOO GOOD)

He means exile the spell that's being countered. Which works rather well actually.
