Discarding this elephant to the loltroll seems like a powerful turn two
Doesn't work. Your opponent needs to control the discard ability. Very high power on this card nonetheless, and makes random discard effects significantly worse.
Syncopate is cool. An interesting choice for a reprint, but fits the bill of nerfing the previous block, not being broken with Snapcaster, and being viable in constructed.
What's the point of ANY counterspells at the moment when the cycle of uncounterable spells are kinda powerful. Wrath, kill spell, beat stick (and WHAT a beat stick) memoricide. Here's to hoping the Izzet one is damage based just to piss off the blue players MORE.
Cearley's art is always hit or miss with me. I don't think I like this art, but it's colorful in any case. Spell is good, too. I think people were asking for this sort of spell back when M13 was being spoiled, no?
As for the Smiter, why are so many people saying, "Well, it's just a 4/4 for 3"? Since when was anything a 4/4 for 3? The closest thing I can think of was Putrid Leech, which was widely agreed as being too powerful, and this has upside :\
Starting to consider a naya-aggro variant for my personal deck, but I guess if this guy becomes popular, he'll be too expensive.
Edit: Didn't realize Syncopate was a reprint. Cool deal, still like the card.
When I read the title "Look What Blue In" I was absolutely convinced Remand was back.
How disappointed am I?
Don't get me wrong, Syncopate is a fine counter. It's no Remand though, and it's upsides don't outweigh the downsides of these new uncounterable spells and Cavern of Souls lurking everywhere. I'd be surprised if Syncopate saw play as more than a 1-2 of in a small percentage of control decks. Dissipate is better in most cases, though Syncopate is splashable for 5cc. Remand would have been an auto 3-4 of for blue control. It's an incredible tempo card, even with Cavern and company running around.
The Loxodon guy is fine. He's just a big dumb undercosted vanilla guy with a slight upside against Blue and Black-based control. I am slightly annoyed that "Pilgrim, Loxodon" is going to be a popular play, meaning I have to deal with a 4/4 on turn 2. At least he's not Hexproof, he dies to a Dreadbore or Mizzium Mortars just fine.
If Blue doesnt get a strong Counterspell....Then its official....Blue is a dead color in Ravnica.
Be less melodramatic. First of all, blue already got Izzet Charm as an amazing counterspell. If you mean mono blue, well I hate to break it to you but every monocolor is getting the shaft this set

Check out the thread for my cube if you have the time, and tell me how terrible it is.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
I think Syncopate is supposed to be Dissipates #5-8, but considering people don't run all 4, and apparently every spell on ravnica is counter-proof, this seems kinda meh.
Also, I really cannot tell what is going on with that art??????
I agree, it would have been nice if, at the very least, they had worded it like mindbreak trap and had it just "exile target spell" OR if they had just printed a better counterspell instead.
Of course that loxodon dude is a giant middle finger to liliana, which is good, because creature based strategies needed a lot more help against control in standard. Although, it still dies to Smother v2, so whatever.
Discarding this elephant to the loltroll seems like a powerful turn two
No it doesn't? It has to be discarded to a spell or ability controlled by an opponent to enter play. If you discard it to the loltroll it just sits in your graveyard.
Yeah, I'm going to be honest, i pictured that art on Remand and was almost weeping with joy. Now that I see what it actually is, I can't help but feel underwhelmed. Elephant is good though.

On Syncopate? It's a woman going "Oh no you di-int". Fits the spell nicely.
Loxodon Smiter would be the Selesyna uncounterable I called being a creature. Really didn't think it would be this pushed, but at least it doesn't have hexproof. Any U/x deck will need to pack spot removal for it.
I am SO pleased there's a playable 2-mana counter-all in this format. I mean, I love Izzet Charm and all, but I'm sticking with Bant colors. The 4/4 for 3 is nothing new. Woolly Thoctar was a 5/4 for 3, albeit slightly more difficult to cast.
It's actually supposed to. Way back when it was first printed in Odyssey, WotC said they chose the name "Syncopate" because it combines aspects of Power Sink (counter target spell unless its controller pays :xmana:) and Dissipate (if the spell is countered this way, exile it).

Lapsed DCI Rules Advisor - Retired from playing but still hanging around
Good thing that counterspell is nothing to be awestruck over because the artwork isn't very artistic in my opinion, and I'm glad I won't have to worry about putting it in a deck. As for the Loxodon; pretty cool. About what I expected from it.
It's kind of lame that we get all these uncounterable spells and no strong counterspell. What's the point? Hell, at this point I really miss Cancel, and that's really saying something.

Read Loxodon Smiter more better.

Seems like a powerful waste of a card... Loxodon Smiter's replacement effect on discard only triggers if the OPPONENT controls the discard effect.
