So far 11 cards that I dont want or need, the 10 oversized foils, wich are nothing but crap, I dont know why wizards keep pushing them, and a foil mimeoplasm, I already own the commander one, and I dont need it in foil.
Indeed! I like to enjoy the original color and darkness/brightness of the work of art. You cant really enjoy that the same way when you have rainbow swirls of color all over that shifts with light refraction.
Yeah that's why I like old-border foils. I liked the way that it was only the border that was foiled. It looked classy imo.
I wish people would understand this, and quit griping about getting a version that is more valuable than the same card would be in nonfoil.
Some of you don't like foils, but some of us do.
God forbid they throw that latter group a bone occasionally,
ESPECIALLY since they axed PDS for this...
Sure. Except PDS went for MSRP $34.99. And it was 60 all foil cards, some of which (especially in the case of Graveborn) were highly sought after. Costing more than twice that for sleeves valuing approx. $10 and only 18 playable foil cards? (i.e. not oversized cards). That would be a total ripoff. I don't even care about the life counter. Sure, it's a pimpin' life counter, but PDS came with a spindown D20, and this could hardly be worth more than that as it can't even be used to roll to see who goes first. That's why I think it was a typo.

Yeah a lot of cards in PDS were utter garbage too or basic lands so who cares? At least now we're getting mostly good cards. I could care less about the extras and the stupid oversized cards.

I'll tell you exactly why they are here...to fill up print sheets. They needed to fill out print sheets that are getting foiled (done before the cards are die-cut), and apparently they thought giving us extra cards that we will want and use (rather than throw away) would mean they would have to drop the total value of cards in order to meet that price point- which I find laughable.
Anybody notice that the cards in the pic are already bent?
Foils stay in the best condition when they're not in an extremely humid climate. WotC is located in Seattle. I would be absolutely shocked if the cards weren't at least a little bent.
wow £50 is a lot for this, I hope there's some VERY good cards, otherwise I won't touch it with a barge pole.
Yeah, I would agree. $75 US for 18 foil cards plus some other minor accessories???? I don't really care for the sleeves or the over-sized cards. The life counter is interesting but I don't see why this set can't be set at a lower price point. I mean, even the PDS and FTV series don't have such a high MSRP...
My friend might want this for the sylvan libraries. He uses them in zoo legacy. But i wonder why its 75$ That to me seems a little bit steep but i wont know until the list is spoiled

I suppose I should start building my walk-in Humidor to store them, then.
If they'd sell 15-card boosters with a few random foils in it, most would be happy to buy a few of those boosters at more than standard booster price. Maybe even some Legacy or Modern players could buy them if they also included some decent reprints. Anyway, it would sell to all sorts of players, everything except only-collectors.
To be fair, that was NEVER going to happen. This was a hastily compiled product, so deciding on, mocking up, and packaging such a product would not be feasable- not to mention it would be a wildly unique product since they have never made boosters for anything other than block sets before. If you do that you do it right, and that would require much more lead-time to do right. Also, when they print foils then have to print a whole sheet worth of them for it to be economical, and I am not sure how much is on a sheet, but I know it is a lot more than would be required for "a few random foils".
To me and, guessing by the comments, most other players, it's a slap in the face saying: "We made this more expensive so not everyone can buy it."
I am against this product but again, to be fair, I think this represents a fundamental misunderstanding of the wants of a majority of the Commander players. I think that a "slap in the face" is a more deliberate act, where as this is just ignorance.
Although they did, with the Alara Premium boosters. On the surface it may look "just like a foil print of the Alara block", in reality they had to keep stuff out and actually mix 3 different sets into one. So it's not unique but it hasn't been done before.
I don't think that is anywhere close to what you suggested, and they has plenty of lead time to plan it and do it right (if you liked that sort of thing).
What do you mean by ignorance ? If you mean that we players and collectors shouldn't expect that every product is aimed at us, you are correct. I didn't want Planechase 2012, I'm not interested in Duel Decks, etc.
But this is actually targeted at the wrong people.
It is ignorance because I believe that Wizards thinks that this product, created in this way, is actually desired by a majority of the Commander players where as I think they are dead wrong. I don't think that Wizards set out to create a product that would only be attractive to a small sub-set of Commander players, they created this thinking that we would get a funny feeling in our naughty bits just thinking about it*, and I think that shows that they do not really know this demographic.
I do not have numbers or any market training, this is all just the opinion of a player, but it is based on a lot of face time with a lot of EDH players.
so, I'm out of the loop, what else has been spoiled?
1/10 Oversized foils (Azusa)
Officially 2/18 standard sized foils (Mimeoplasm, Sylvan Library)
"Battle Marks" (basically plastic chips with a + and - on them meant to be used as counters)
A life counter that goes up to 99
120 "premium" sleeves
And a ridiculous price tag of 75 bucks
This is just a rumor, but since we are in a rumor thread. I had heard from some shop owners (who apparently has a "connection") that Vampiric Tutor was getting a reprint in this set. I mean take it for what it is, I don't believe anything until I see it I just thought you guys would want to hear what I chalk up to speculation.
Yeah a lot of cards in PDS were utter garbage too or basic lands so who cares? At least now we're getting mostly good cards. I could care less about the extras and the stupid oversized cards.
Thing is, this product likely has the same amount of not-utter-garbage as PDS. Yet it's still $75? The only really new thing here are the "battle marks" and the life counter, but I don't see that justifying the doubling MSRP from PDS. I wouldn't be surprised if this product has the shortest print run of any.
- 10 oversized foils that really are of no practical use
- 18 foiled normal cards, with if speculated right, 5 old commanders, 1 Command Tower and as revealed, 1 Sylvan Library, meaning there are 11 unrevealed cards left
- 120 foiled sleeves, an unnecessary addition that ramps up the price
- 20 +/- chips, I think it's better to just use normal dice, but I guess it varies from person to person, yet again an unnecessary addition that ramps up the price in my view
- 1 really neat life counter, this I wouldn't call unnecessary, I'm actually fine with this one, however.. It is still not worth the price
And all this can be yours for just 75 dollars
Those 10 oversized cards could've been split up into 20 normal cards, why on earth would they do this?
Well it can always contain a foil 'Goyf...
But I am puzzled that they would make a product with $75 MSRP, unless it also had a bunch of commons so it would be like 60 cards.
Now if a few cards are bad or you won't use some cards, you really are not getting much.
The life counter is cool, the sleeves are stupid, the counters are meh. Oversized are hmm... so the foils better be outstandingly good to compensate.
So correct me if I am wrong but after seeing this today I think we just got our FTV:Commander product and it really can't even be argued that it isn't. The thing here is that WOTC just priced it right out of the gate at what most FTV's tend to go for. I will buy this only if it is sold in big box stores. The only problem with the big box stores is how much these will be destroyed by thefts.
