How about that! I wonder if this particular card is Shawn Main's doing? Dark Ascension is the first set that he's contributed to (in the form of hole-filling, not as part of the design team) and red looting was his "shift a mechanic" portion of his GDS2 essay. Even if that's just coincidental, I'm very happy to see this change happen, a first step towards a greater variety in red mechanics and card selection.
Unless you have no cards in hand when you cast/flashback this spell. It'd be a cheap way to use Chandra Ablaze's hand-refilling ability or a mini Wheel of Fortune.
Good point, I hadn't thought of that. I can imagine they might want to do that at some point, actually, but I expect it wasn't what they were going for here, ruling that out.
The card picture just looks fake. The art is blurry, but the text is clear, the expansion symbol looks strange... It's a really bad mock-up, at least. Why do you guys think it's real if it looks so fake?

Some facts of magic:
-Terror is an emotion which, when experienced, results in death.
-The pox was a disease notorious for having killed one-third, rounded up, of Europe’s population. Smallpox, on the other hand, killed only a single person.
-A person riding a horse cannot be stopped by foot soldiers, large animals, walls, archers, or even catapults.

because it looks like every other "official" mockup wizards has ever made?

Welcome to literally every preview-card-mockup ever given out by Wizards. This is absolutely nothing unusual or out of place.
Am I missing something? Isn't it still 3RRR or 4RRR with Past In Flames? Doesn't strike me as an amazing play.
it all depends on what your dumping, the thread in modern about trying to break past in flames uses a whole mess of ramp cards sething song, desperate ritual, manamorphose and others.it helps by adding card advantage to it.
of course playing past in flames then playing JUST faithless is a bad play, but if you played a whole mess of ramp cards youve been dumping into your yard the whole game, past in flames them, play them again then draw four for RR then that turns into great card advantage and a higher storm count.
there are other cool things with this card too, burial rites comes to mind,a rbw control type deck that can drop a balefire dragon turn 4 is christmas landish, but still sounds fun.heck even splashing red into a the standard human deck for this for a chance to get dearly departed into the yard, play some humans like stormblood berserker then proliferate those counters with a volt charge sounds possible.
This card will be close to Preordain in terms of power in standard. Anyone saw deck tech with Chapin's Grixis control? Seems like a the perfect match. Works nicely with Ponder too.
This would be insanely powerful if it wasn't because it's red. Careful study is so good in part because it's blue. I love changing the pie and giving red (the color with the least mechanics) blue (the color with the most and better mechanics) things.

Yeah, hopefully whoever is behind this card has some other ideas up their sleeve for a color pie balancing.
This seems like it could propel Burning Vengeance to tier 1 by itself. That's an almost insane amount of filtering, and then being able to get burn damage from it too? Icing on the cake.
It's Careful Study in red and with a relatively cheap flashback cost, this is a fantastic card which will most definitely see play, it enables reanimation and any other graveyard based strategies very well. I hope it's not actually rare but i'd be amazed if it was anything less than an uncommon.
You gain a short-term advantage (better quality of cards in hand) in exchange for long-term resources (pitching cards that could have also been used). And in the case of this particular card, you do actually lose real card advantage unless things like flashback are involved.
Take your monoblack deck, then set aside 14 swamps. Add 4 Creeping Tar Pits, 4 Darkslick Shores, 4 Drowned Catacombs, and 2 Jwar isle Refuge and add 4 Jace, the Mindsculptors. Your monoblack deck is instantly better. Better yet, drop those refuges, throw in some islands and some mana leaks, and lo and behold, you're now playing a real deck. Congratulations. Welcome to the world of competitive M:TG.
I really hope this thing is real, and that it's an uncommon. it's insane.
It's exactly what UR delver needs for its draw (or atleast my version). Super fantastic in my eyes. Is it bad that this one card has me totally psyched for the next set?
It's card disadvantage w/o flashback....and well, just card filtering for it's flashback. Still, this card will be considered for several applications. I like it.
Is this confirmed to be in Dark Ascension, or is that merely conjecture based on precedence?
I'm really hoping it is confirmed, as I would prefer not having to track down a promo.
It's stated in the article it is from Dark Ascension. Did no one read the line "One of the hooks with the Magic: The Gathering comic is an exclusive card for use with the upcoming Magic: The Gathering – Dark Ascension set."

Is there a way for foreigners (I live in switzerland...) to get a copy of this or the Comic with the other Promo Insert?
Yeah, hopefully whoever is behind this card has some other ideas up their sleeve for a color pie balancing.

Seriously though this is a pretty awesome card, Careful Study in red with flashback, that's NICE CARD!
