cage costing one is almost a downside tbh, most graveyard themed decks are already wary of a myriad of 1 cmc graveyard haters and usually run some missteps just for them, those will hit this just as well...
Except that Misstep is only legal in Standard and Vintage, so Legacy reanimator doesn't get access to them (the format where is counts the most).
It shows how wizards wants us to play the game. Combo, control and 'fun' decks get hosers that cost 1 stop stop them dead in their tracks at any point. Aggro decks get a hoser that costs 3BB and just throws them a hurdle. Even our sweepers aren't particularly good
LOL WotC hates Dredge, and I think it's finally showing through with this hate. How are they going to print a card that hoses it's main block mechanic? Solar Flare will have to run 3 - 4 of mental misstep, more artifact destruction, or stop playing the deck altogether. Cage is going to be in SB in all formats.
They are also forcing us to use creatures, way too much. Way to hurt your long standing player base!

'fun' decks? I get that you hate the card and all, but this is beginning to feel like hyperbole. This card does NOT hose combo and control, as a whole. Can it hose a certain kind of combo or control? Sure. But making general statements like that is absurd. It's one thing to talk about the archetypes that this card does hose, but come on. and the sweepers in standard aren't much better than they have been in a while, which is to say, fairly good. We've got the standard wrath effect, and the normal red sweepers, as well as some sweepers, incremental or no, in black. The card's good, but you're making it sound like it broke the game in half.
Ambush viper will still see play bc of flash. Good cards. This set has hope yet!
Well it's also a 2/1 for 2 that has Flash and can trade very well... Like sure this card makes Viper a little worse but it goes right next to Viper easily.
Since when is a 2/1 with Death Touch bad in limited? In fact a 2/1 with Death Touch and Reach for 2 saw play in Standard during Tarmogoyf's time.

I don't think I've seen any combo decks in standard that don't require a graveyard interaction that this card shuts down.

Ok, its not killing every combo and control deck, only about 75%-90% of them, mostly fledgling ones that are yes, more fun to play (pod) and needed a boost to their power, not a kick in the shins. This is a card that only hoses combo and control really- aggro decks just sort of ignore it, besides perhaps zombies. Its an example of a card that overwhelmingly hates on certain archetypes but leaves another unscathed- and in this case, with ridiculous efficiency behind it.
I felt a great disturbance in the force, like a thousand decks across several formats suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has been printed
I really dont get y this card was made. To those ppl sayin u can just naturalize this, the decks that are affected by this card doesnt hav the time to deal with the cage while struggling with PWs and titans. From a spike point of view i dont really care, cuz my titans arent being reanimated, but i do like playing pod n brewing casual decks, but the cage is really oppressive. ( i cant even pod for slime for christs sake!)
It took me a few seconds to figure out why the "from your library" clause was in there. I was like "Are they going to be printing a bunch of undercosted Panglacial Wurms in the next few sets and are afraid they'd take over standard!?"
And then I realized "Oh right, Birthing Pod."

You've got a rat in your walls, and cheese won't solve anything.
I guess I'm just looking at it this way---if i'm the player playing against the deck I want to hose with this card...I still need to actually put this in my deck and play it. If a deck like Dredge existed in standard, functioning completely off of "going off" in the graveyard, I'd happily use this, since resolving this means that I won. I'd have to take out some good cards in my deck for a 1 mana artifact that doesn't do anything for me, but I'm fine, since that 1 mana artifact reads "you win the game". However, against something like Solar Flare--I'd rather just side in something that's good against control in general, still working with my deck. Does it shut down some cards in the deck? Sure, but the vast majority of them still function. They can still cast think twice and forbidden alchemy. My point is, at least in standard, there's no deck this shuts down so completely that I'd feel good playing an artifact that does absolutely nothing in place of...well, any card in my deck. When Splinter Twin was in standard, I could persuade myself to side in Torpor Orb because I could stop the deck from winning by just playing that. But as it stands now, I don't think I'd want to make any room in my sideboard for this card. If some degenerate graveyard recursion combo deck comes up, sure. But if a deck uses the graveyard for some extra functioning, I'd rather attack them from another angle.
To everyone that says its no big deal just destroy it! And what if your ancient grudge gets countered? Odds are you probably just lost the game because you're already so far behind because they played a 1 cost on the play that already put you at such a disadvantage think of all the mana/resources you'll spend trying to deal it. I personally think that card is powerful and the fact that it only cost 1 just makes it insane. spellbomb is one thing but this card is a little ridiculous. Guess well just have to wait for the rest of the set before we start a riot. For everyone hoping to play monoblack zombies wizards just lit a bag of dog**** on your doorstep
Yep, and thats why "Dies to Dismember" is and will remain a valid argument until next rotation, sigh. It might be a fun casual deck though.
Right on. I'd love to see this ooze getting a power level boost (cough shroud /cough) and becoming a mythic, and bumping down our vampire nighthawkvorapod from mythic status. That would have made a lot more sense. Well, vorapod still wouldn't even deserve to be rare, so maybe not.
Vorapede is actually not bad at all given that it has undying. Especially if you combine it with new spells like feed the pack. Plus, there's not a lot of cards that have both vigilance and trample.
Mono black infect is the only deck I have that doesn't get effed by the cage, well see you in september thoughts of making new decks. In the meantime I guess I'm a collector.

Oh I don't think vorapods bad on the power level, it might have been playable in pod (if this card didn't kill pod), its more of the fact that vorapod should have been an uncommon with lower power, not a french vanilla mythic- many people don't like vorapod for being badly designed, not necessarily how strong it is. This Ooze is an awesomely designed card that is flavorful, unique and interesting, and its only rare, while vorapod is no more complex than vampire nighthawk but its somehow a mythic
Probably one of most versatile hate cards ever printed, albeit one of the weirdest "hate" cards I've ever seen. It manages to shut down some of the most powerful cards in just about every deck in Legacy, and in many decks in Standard, while missing things that normal graveyard hate cards hit. For example, it doesn't do anything about Loam or Crucible, but it manages to shut down Reanimate, Snapcaster, and GSZ at the same time. It should find a home in many a sideboard moving forward.

Heh...I hope the Persist deck I'm making doesn't see this...
Probably not a smart idea to try and discuss anything other than the cage in this thread.
