Strange promo choices. Vault Skirge may have potential in the future I suppose, but Maul Splicer doesn't look like it would be going anywhere. I wonder what sort of FFL brew ran that well.

How is Vault Skirge going anywhere? Both promos seem pretty bad. Also, why is gateway only commons now? =|

Hey, lolis with katanas are awesome, and I don't care about their home country.

I honestly don't think WPN is about what played well. FNM (about half the time), Player Rewards, Judge Foils, and Grand Prix probably have that covered. Prerelease, Release, Pro Tour (ironically), and WPN seem to be more about what might interest less tournament oriented players. Vault Skirge is neat because it pays for itself with the lifelink. Maul Splicer gives you 3 creatures for the price of one card. It's also sort of a 7/7 for 7 that's more likely to kill someone than Enormous Baloth.

Fair enough. Perhaps these were cards that scored well during godbook surveys. They are pretty neat cards and potentially exciting for the casual crowd even if they don't do anything of import in more "serious" play.

Other than PTE, that's been the general trend of WPN since the program started. Of course, it's the exception to the rule, since that was the only way to get it out there in huge quantity, as fast as possible. They couldn't really print it at common, though, since it kills everything for 1 mana. Sure, there's been the rare exception like Sprouting Thrinax that's seen a lot of play, but it was only in 1 deck and, obviously, Jund was better than intended.
It actually makes sense to make WPN for non tournament players, though. Basically, they're giving out a stack of foils with no real event to tie them to. They'd all just end up on ebay instead of being used for drawing in casuals to the store.
Whether it looks tacky or not, the FNM/Play stamp makes it immediately obvious what the promo is for. Not everyone has the patience to do research as the million threads of the same topic will attest to.
I think they should give this job to the guy who gave us Path/Hellspark and Firewalker/Baloth and not the guy who gave us Twinclaws/Slave, Pathrazer/Curse and Rise/Mind Control. From a set dripping with potential commons/uncommons they continue to promo the least exciting and useful cards in there.
When wizards keeps choosing cards like these as promos, it's hard for me to tell myself that someone sat down and said that this is what we want to reward players with.

Tempered Steel decks are desperate for a 1 mana artifact creature to the point where they play the one that has B: gains infect till eot. (can't remember its name atm lol). One that has evasion an quickly gains you more life than was spent on it if it sticks looks ok.

This.
People, stop whining like children every time a promo is not a bomb in competitive constructed. These promos are not meant for you. They're meant for casual players and people that are new to the game.
Last Friday at FNM I gave some randoms out to our newer players. One lady, who was playing in her first FNM, got the foil Curse of Wizardry. She LOVED getting it. That's the type of person these cards are geared towards.

L1 MtG judge (L2 coming soon) and Dominion tournament coordinator serving Flint MI and its surrounding cities.
Wow these promos are over the top terrible. They don't need a Path type promo every time or even often, but cant there be some middle ground? - interesting cards that show off the new mechanics and aren't terrible?
Leeched image attached.

That said, the Splicer's art is worse but I like this version of the Skirge.
I know I am beating a dead horse back to life, but that "Play" mark on the art is ugly and needs to die in a fire. Like touch damage in video games.

It's not like they'll be any more expensive than a jank rare. You could pick them up off the internet for $2 each, easily.
