I want someone to explain to me what exactly makes a card a "cashgrab" for Wizards of the Coast. I see this word thrown around a lot, but what do you actually think it means?
A card that is printed at mythic rarity (or higher rarity than it should be) for the purpose of selling more boxes/packs. At least that's what I consider a cash grab card to be.
Don't worry, I was a Momentous Fail preacher too. A lot of us were.
I was probably one of the few people who wasn't on the Momentous Fall bandwagon back when that card was spoiled. I'm glad I drank the Vengevine Kool-Aid instead.
Seriously though, it still amazes me how people continue to miss so badly when evaluating cards. Momentous Fall flopped -- big time. We're more than likely going to see the same thing happen yet again as Scars continues to be spoiled.

Anyone that uses it generally has no idea what they are talking about.
The nature of a mox is that it is a chase card, a card that will be worth money.
This is LEGENDARY. This is not a card decks will run 4 copies of, because if you hold more than one in your hand, it is deadweight.
That should temper the price.
Complaining about mythics being good is getting ridiculously old. There was no legitimate reason for WoTC to print a mox at rare besides 'people would whine about it'.

It's underwhelming without a reasonable number of -2 activations to empower it - and especially in the case I was referring to of someone answering T4 DoJ, T5 Elspeth: -2 for 3 tokens where you'd be dealing with an empty board.
(Oh and of course, the person debating the other side is assuming your opponent is doing nothing on the turn between... which is a tad foolish to say the least)
I have to disagree here... She is totally amazing... It certainly is not foolish to assume that gaining life in a control deck is insane... even if it is only three, and that is also saying that you do not run creatures as well. And for her to be able to blow up the board...well that is just special. The fact of the matter is that her ultimate will be on par with that of a Nevinyrral's disk that does not blow up itself or tokens. That being said we have yet to see how much that lack of killing tokens will be a drawback. It is amazing tempo, and will surely see some play and be quite effective. The only problem I have with her is that she blows up Jace 2.0... Which would make her ultimate less than optimal in U/W. It would probably have to be relegated to being used at utmost need.

Opal is actually a really good example of a cash-grab. It doesn't make the game "more fun", unless you are a volrath that simply drools at the thought of another mox entering the MtG universe. It's pretty much the definition of a utility card, yet it's printed at the rarest level in magic. Speculation on it's playability in the older formats alone will drive pre-orders to a point that normal rarity could not. That's a cash-grab.
The amusing part is people feeling outraged that they actually beleived Wizards wouldn't print staples at mythic rarity.

Unless you use Jace, the Mind Sculptor to Brainstorm it away. There's always ways to make this or any "should only play 1 of" card good.

Why is Elspeth killing other planeswalkers like its no ones business...
Fluff-wise, I'm pretty sure she doesn't "kill" them with her ultimate. She harms them enough that they go away for a while, or otherwise purges them. The card that goes to the graveyard represents the spell you used to call a planeswalker to help you in your cause, so if you can cast that spell again you can summon that walker again.
Teysa, meet the new Elspeth. I believe you two will have many awesome adventures together in EDH.

Utility card? Not in Standard, or Extended. In order to use this card effectively, you need to be able to reliably get at least two other artifacts in play by your first/second turn. Not every deck is willing to/should be playing that many artifacts just to use this card, which you won't even need four copies of anyway (since multiples are dead cards). Utility cards can be put into a huge variety of decks without having to build around them. This is a card you have to build your deck around in order to use well.

But the bottom line is, complaining that a company that sells you a product is trying to make money is a ridiculous notion in and of itself.
My affinity deck is looking at that mox and sees a perfect replacement for springleaf drum

You're disagreeing with me over nothing - I like her a ton, I just think that example the person gave of T4 DoJ, T5 3 tokens as a "automatic win against aggro, really what do they do?" was ridiculous.
New Moxen eh'? Ima' gonna be playing me some artifacts in standard this winter I believe
Turn 1 : Plains, Memnite, Memnite, Ornithopter, Mox Opal, tap land & Opal, Gold Myr.
Turn 2 : Plains, Tap both lands & Opal, Tempered Steel. Swing for 11.
Turn 3 : Victory!
^^ scarily feasible. acknowledging you draw into a land or tempered steel.

Skill is an ability that relates more so to the type of deck that's built and how said player pilots it. It also relates to the ability to assess the board and use the cards available to you in the most optimal way relative to each situation.
When a deck is filled with above par cards and every play is solid, there comes a diminishing need to "think" for the lack of wanting to use a better word.

Mox Opal might become auto include many vintage decks
Ugh, this is like the Kozilek reveal all over again. Mox opal is going to have infinite hype, and then people are going to realize it's legendary. Is it good? Yes. Is it going to forever doom players who don't pick one up? No.
I'm really starting to think Elspeth 2.0 is going to end up being a Mini-El, like Mini-Jace.
+2: Gain Life -
"Whee! I now have 57 life!" "Congrats. Have a 10th poison counter."
-2: 3 white 1/1 soldier tokens
Pyroclasm, Chump blockers... Win More or cling to dear life.
-5: Boomness
With ~80 Artifacts, ~1/3rd made of darksteel and indestructible estimating in this set (let alone the rest of the block, which will have power creep)... Destroy effects aren't as reliable for removal.
I love the design of the new Elspeth, and the way her -2 meshes with her ultimate. She puts out 3 chump blockers to protect herself, and then she can pump herself towards disking the board, while using the chump blockers to ensure that she can get her ultimate, and forcing the opponent to over-commit to the board to get past the chumps, which in turn makes the Disk effect even more effective. The only concern with her I can see is that she doesn't mesh well with Jace TMS in the way that something like Gideon or old Elspeth does, as her ultimate will also get rid of him. This might restrict her to more aggro based decks, rather than giving her a spot over Gideon as the second PW of choice in UW control. Speaking of Gideon, I've gotta think the spoilers of Venser and Elspeth 2.0 helps his value in the new standard, as he still seems to be the best 5 drop planeswalker in UW control(which seemed to be in doubt since there were two blue and/or white PWs coming out today) vs. Venser(who seems more suited to Reveillark shenanigans this extended PTQ season)/Elspeth.
hmmm just a question would elspeth destroy artifact lands... she doesnt right?

Legendary? Wasn't expecting that. I guess thats one of the ways they could prevent it from being super broken though.
Just imagine if it wasn't legendary or tapped for a colorless without metalcraft. That would make it 50$+
As for the elspeth, I was wondering about the loyalty on it, then I saw it didn't nuke itself. That is absolutely crazy. Hey Ajani, you've got a new playmate.
I want someone to explain to me what exactly makes a card a "cashgrab" for Wizards of the Coast. I see this word thrown around a lot, but what do you actually think it means?
Poor wording on my part, I still say that Mythic is a bit much, but my point was that I like the card. I kind of rushed my dislike for the rarity.
But to me a cashgrab is when they print a card that they know that of people will want multiples of at a higher rarity in order to sell more cases to retailers who need singles of the card in stock. They break the custom of "simple effects at common, more complicated effects at uncommon, and complicated effects at rare" and "higher impact in limited means higher rarity" just because the card will be in high demand. Printing Bloodbraid Elf at Rare would have been a cashgrab.

You're using 6/7 cards first turn, one of which is most likely a one-of, and you're playing two copies of the same card.
If you're allowed to stack your deck like that, you could win with just about anything.
