So I better build up Merfolk now... What are people going to take out to play it?
Sage's Dousing in a more aggressive build, or Lark if it ends up testing well enough to make the loss worthwhile. I don't like the loss of Dousing, but if it comes to that...
I'm calling it right now- worst rare in the set. Even good limited players will find better bombs at common and uncommon no sweat. Worst. Episode. Ever.
I really do predict this to be our worst rare in set award winner. I'd be happier opening a jar of eyeballs, so I think anything worse is highly unlikely. This card wont just have zero constructed potential, but not be significantly better than a mass of ghouls in a draft.
Actually, I'd be disappointed if we dont get some kind of ophidian-esque creature for :symgu:, it's too big of a common area for the two colors not to be revised in an hybrid set.

...and give Doran decks an Ohran Viper until the entire deck rotates?
Anyway... It looks good, but I don't think it really has a spot in the deck. Its to vulnerable and dies to practically any removal. It also was no evasion, so it can't easily get in there. It still has some potential, it'll need a lot of play testing.
Average, imo. You need creatures to untap with, so that means in order for it to be any where near as aggressive as it should be (compared to similarly costed cards), you need to have attacked with 2-4 creatures the turn before. Moreover, it doesn't even have evasion....

It's a stinkingmerfolk. Even without any of these it untaps as a minimum 4/4 next turn. I guess I need to find my Lords... of all the things to give blue, it didn't need this at all, but I'll take it
Hungry Spriggan sees zero play. It has built in evasion. You can't rely on other cards to make cards good.
Not saying that it won't see play, because it might, but Islandwalk isn't real evasion without some work and I don't know what you cut for it. Sage's Dousing is very good in the deck because of the banneret. Sygg is already underplayed in the deck and is much better in merfolk than this. The card, in a way, forces you to overcommit because you have to do something everyturn.

Plus it's pretty hard for the typical "dies to removal" options when Merfolk decks have counterspells up the wazoo, not to mention a guy who grants Merfolk protection. This card is pure bred nuts.
You can if they are a collection of cards that make up a T1 deck, nearly all of which are poor on their own. This is Merfolk, not Rock, and it has already proven itself as a top tier deck. I think Mutavault puts this card over the top for me, as you will reliably have ways to tap permanents every turn, or at least the turn before the alpha strike. And it is probably the best post-wrath drop in Merfolk(if the Wrath didn't get countered).

Level 3 Magic Judge
Do you know any judges who always impress you with their work ethic, knowledge, or attitude? Nominate them to be the next Judge of the Week!
So I have been playing merfolk almost exclusively since shadowmoore came out and this guy is nuts.
Comparing this to spriggin:
Spriggin is only a 1/1 for 2G until it attacks and would be in decks that play green.
Thrasher is a 1/1 for U, 1U, or 2U or free or you can even NET mana the turn you play it and on your opponents turn in a deck that plays blue.
Aside from gratuitously sinking mana into a mutavault at EOT to make the guy huge, A simple Cryptic command will make this guy a 5/5. When merfolk goes affinity style he will be ridiculous when you go reejerey, rejeery, adept, adept, thrasher, curscatcher. Cryptic command your wrath... win the game.
My point is this... during my turn I am swinging with a guy or two and on your turn I am countering your spells for 2-4 mana, so a 6/6 that demands an answer seems pretty good. The guy fits in a deck where you have to kill every single creature or lose the game. You can't let the banneret live or you lose, don't let the reejerey live or you lose, dont let the lord of atlantis or lose, let this guy live?
Cloudthesher doesnt have evasion
Tarmogoyf doesnt have evasion
Korlash doesn't have evasion
Vanquisher doesnt have evasion
No cards from Kithkin realistically have evasion (minus spectral procession)
Merfolk play counterspells. Protecting this guy is pretty easy
Cloudthresher is undercosted with flash and wraths faeires
Tarmogoyf is the most efficient beater ever. Argue Tog if you want.
Korlash regenerates, granduers, and is cheap.
Vanquisher is undercosted and and deathtouch.
Kithin wins by pooping out creatures until it can mirrorweave. It doesn't care too much about its 1 and 2 drops having evasion.
Spriggan is still a 4/4 trample for 3 and has seen zero play. Sure, this is going to be bigger, but also has no evasion. Do you really need this guy to win when you can go reejery reejery adept adept cursecatcher and cryptic command? He seems really good when you curve out, and very sub-par otherwise. I would rather throw a wrench into my manabase and splash for Goyf than play this guy. He's bigger and cheaper.
This card is a win more. Seriously, it's nice in casual when you can easily get rid of more opponents. But 1on1 this card is nothing extra. A deck with mutavault, lord of atlantis, reejerey, one drop, card draw, land and mirrorweave will allready win on turn 5. You don't need this card.
Though if Merfolk control will show up this card will be a good candidate.

hey i have managed to evolve my axolotls by feeding them thyroid glands the thyroxine contained in these gland is enough to change these water dwelling creatures into land based creatures

Tay, that's not evolution. It's metamorphosis. Evolution means descent with heritable modification – individuals cannot evolve, unless they're Pokemon.

Hey, me too! Except that I had to leave my wife who was having a baby to go to the computer. I feel kinda bad about that, but magic cards are more important than family.

hes an aggressive fatty thats undercosted AND in the counterspell color.
sounds good to me.
I wouldn't say that he is undercosted. He can be like any other merfolk but i don't think that it is a major selling point. He is a merfolk which is pretty awesome for the deck and if you untap with this guy in play he will be a 4/4 on turn 4. Then add in any shenanagians that you can pull off. This guy lets merfolk swing with a big dude. Once you attack if he drops down to a 1/1 on my opponents turn I am not that worried about it. I dunno, I like the guy and I think he makes a lot of sense.
I think this is card is being extremely underrated. Tarmo doesn't have evasion either so that's a dumb reason to say this guy isn't good. This guy is huge in blue. He's a huge fattie that comes down fairly cheap.
At the very least he's a 4/4 on turn 4 in BLUE! With any accel he's a turn 3 4/4 attacker.
But on most occasions he's gonna be a 5/5 on turn 4. And what about if you drop a 4th turn garruk...and every turn he's gonna get bigger if you can tap out your land and curve properly.
There's so many cards to make him good...i haven't even mentioned merfolk...
Oh and there is literally no comparison to spriggan. Spriggan is a completely different card...I don't even get how there being compared. This card is gonna be bigger and doesnt have to attack to see the gain. I love this card...I'm definitely picking up a playset while they're cheap.
The first time I read this I thought it was "Whenever a permanent you control becomes tapped ~" but this is way better because you can counter on their turn and then get the bonus on your next turn.

Protection from reason (Decadent_Creed can't be blocked, targeted, dealt damage, or enchanted by reason.)
Anybody who doesn't think this will at least be a 12 dollor card is smoking crack. This... is... the... new...tarmogoyf. I could see it even played in vintage.

Yes, I agree. This is an amazing card and one of the only rares I'm thinking about getting. This will probably end up being the only chase rare in the set.
Sage's Dousing in a more aggressive build, or Lark if it ends up testing well enough to make the loss worthwhile. I don't like the loss of Dousing, but if it comes to that...
