I'm not sure if this has been previously posted, my apologies if it has. Wizards has posted selling points for tenth on its retailer site.
Included:
- More Power – Tenth Edition may be the best place for a new player to start but it’s by no means a beginner set. With powerful cycles incredible combo cards, and a few things players never thought we’d reprint, Tenth Edition is the most exciting Core Set since Alpha.
383 black-bordered cards (121 rare, 121 uncommon, 121 common, 20 basic lands).
- Organized Play
Worldwide Release Tournaments (July 13-15, 2007)
Magic Game Day Event in US/Canada on July 14
Promo Card for participants (while supplies last)
Types of play include: league, mini-master, and sealed deck with prizes.
Scavanger hunt: prizes for bringing in classic Magic memorabilia.
Tenth Edition cards are legal in Constructed OP events starting July 20, 2007.
Well this should put a rest to everyone who already clearly sees half a dozen highly coveted cards in the core and still goes "ZOMG CORES ARE SO WORTHLESS AND WEAK WHY NOT REPRINT GOOD CARDS WIZARDS?" Should. Hopefully. Even though I know it won't.
They said before there's going to be a red creature no one thought they would reprint. And given that we know Mogg Fanatic from our vote, it can't be that. I'm guessing either Ball Lightning or Flametongue Kavu.

Hypercube! A New EDH Deck Every Week(ish)!
Just think about this, Extended Rotates in October, there are going to be decks they like, and want to try and re-enable them again, but with a new host of cards. So probably most of these "powerful" cards are going to be aimed in that direction.
If anyone knows why G0-DRAW was banned I would love it if they would PM me. That guy was pure entertainment 100% of the time. Plus he never publicly responded to his Contraptions "Proof" that never panned out.
Hopefully Hyppie stays (unlike Obliterate that game in, altered the meta to some extent, then cycled out after one core set :P)
My wishlist?
-Heartbeat of Spring
-Counterspell (shall I get my asbestos suit now?)
-Duress (I know, unlikely)
-Phyrexian Plaguelord (hey, it was back for 8th... and now we have the Pickles deck which is able to replicate the old Rock And His Millions deck)
-Spiketail Hatchling
-Ankh of Mishra
-True Believer
-at least one cycle of rare duals... either allied Pains, Rav Duals or Fetches... preferably fetches since we're gonna lose them next year.
I'm having trouble thinking up combo deck cards they'd be willing to reprint in a core set... Trix? hell no... ProsBloom? doubtful... Heartbeat Combo? sure, no reason why not... TPS/TEPS/Long/Desire? Storm, can't be in a core set... Wake? It's gold... KCI? heh, not in a million years... Doomsday? No point without p9... Acadmey? HEEEEELLLLLLLLLLL NO!
what else was there?
EDIT: btw, doesn't extended rotate NEXT october? you know, usual 3-year rule? We've only had Ravnica and Time Spiral since the last rotation, which means we still have Lorwyn before we're due for the next one... but it IS true that we lose a big chunk of extended before 11th comes out.
"greatest hits", "some of the best and most popular", "powerful cycles", "a few things players never thought we’d reprint"
I'm intrigued now.
I almost believe they would reprint something like Exalted Angel now. At least that's what I think of when I hear "greatest hits" and "best and most popular".
What cycles would be powerful? the tribal chiefs including Goblin Warchief?
NO MORE SPECULATION ON WHAT CARDS WILL BE IN 10TH!
This thread is for discussion of the "selling points". If you have theories about the actual cards that might be in 10th, there's a lot of other posts about that in the Speculation subforum. Thanks.
The stuff I noticed from this that will be most important to 98% of players is this:
- set release July 13
- release tournies July 13-15
- set legal July 20
- 383 cards (121 rare, 121 uncommon, 121 common, 20 basic lands)
- black bordered
Note that 9th had 350 cards including 20 basic lands, so 10th has 33 more cards.
Well this should put a rest to everyone who already clearly sees half a dozen highly coveted cards in the core and still goes "ZOMG CORES ARE SO WORTHLESS AND WEAK WHY NOT REPRINT GOOD CARDS WIZARDS?"
Why? EVERY core set that comes out contains the advertising jargon "most powerful, most interesting, most exciting core set ever!!!" There's nothing in the advertisement that indicates 10th will be better than 9th, 8th, etc.
Indeed elf, as always selling points are just that. Everyone has the lowest prices and we know that 4 tylenol are equal to 8 advil. So what, it's just words. Let WotC put there money where there mouth is! I hope that they do. I'd love a better core set. I think there are plenty of options to put great cards in. With 33 additional cards I can't wait to see why they did that move. I can only say that this will be an excelent set and a good core and that I can't wait for it to come out!
10th is probably going to be powerful in comparission to other core sets, but besides very few good cards, we don't know much about it.
and Wizards advertising is worthless crap unless they show us some more cards to prove themselves. remember when they tried to sell us CS (or Betrayers/Saviors of Crapigawa) as the best thing since sliced bread?
i really don't want to know how many spots in this core are wasted for pointless crap like Grizzly Bear or Hill Giant. i really don't get what these cards should teach new players other than "expert sets have better cards compared to the core set".
They aren't pointless, they are staples for limited.

Sounds like 'Striking Creatures' to me.
I'd actually've preferred a prerelease to a release. Prereleases seem more fun that Releases, but they look to be a bigger pain to organize...

Underling Ethu's 263rd report read simply "Yes, my lord.Overwhelmingly, my lord." This marked the end of the Mirran-Phyrexian War.
Probably just entails what it says, a scavenger hunt. Random stuff to bring in. Probably old deckboxes and such stuff like that.

This is very true. It is a clever ploy to get more people to be interested in core set release then there has in the past. Not many people buy that much core per release these days. Or at least they are less interested in it when it is released because they have existing copies from other core.

actually extended rotated in 2008 the last rotation was in 2005 and it rotates every 3 years. so this year nothing changes for that format. but i do expect to see come cards to make an appearance in the core set to keep the format becoming as bland as it could be come with the format being from mirrodin to current.

Yeah, right. All R&D has done lately is reprint moderately powerful cards that should've never been considered overpowered in the first place and say "OMG TEH ANCIENT POWAR!!!". Were they to reprint cards like Jokulhaups or Force of Will, I might be more inclined to agree with them.
I'm cool with the way they issue the Core Set, as long as they keep it as an "advanced" set.
What I would like to see, is instead of another "4th Set" in the off years, is some kind of "Core Expert". An expert level Core small set, that covers the stuff that Core deems as "Too complex". This way, they get their precious 4th set a year, they put some of the "Core Blackballed" cards back into standard, and something for the non-starting player to push into after core, instead of having to plunge them directly into the current block.
What is a booster blister? And also, do you guys realize that they're having mini-master tournaments? That's so crazy! This should be good!
A booster blister is a booster in a blister pack, I think they sell them at toys r' us and/or wal-mart. I am also intrigued by mini-master and the scavenger hunt.

I don' think that most people would enjoy having a T2 environment filled with Force of Wills and Armageddons and such. The pool of people who enjoying playing magic with cards like that is relatively small compared to the whole.
It seems sort of silly to ridicule a company for marketing efforts. Of course they are going to hype upcoming products, every company on the face of the planet does it, and it works, thats why they do it. There isn't really any sense complaining about it. If you don't like the marketing, ignore it.
383 cards...it seems like an awkward number, but I cant complain. Though I am curious to see what this "never thought we'd reprint" stuff is, probably my guess random crap they never got to do in TS?
Well I have my doubts about how strong this set will be. The only core set Ive really loved since I first got into magic was 4th, the first core set available to me. So if 10th is anywhere near the power level of 4th ill be very happy but until they give some serious proof of upping the power level a lot beyond troll ascetic and incinerate Im not likely gonna buy any of it.

From MaRo
Every rarity gets good cards. That means that some mythic rares will be tournament quality as will some commons, some uncommons and some rares. My promise wasn't that mythic rares wouldn't get good cards but that we wouldn't limit the good cards to only being mythic rare.
Bear this in mind the next time a powerful mythic rare is spoiled

That might be like what they did at Nationals last year. They did stuff like give shirts to whoever brought up a Homelands card first.
What I'm wondering is what they're doing with Mini-Masters.

This article confuses me, with Coldsnap in the rotation, Lorwyn is number 9 in the extended rotation.
So its the set after Lorwyn that rotates Extended?
