This thread is largely for reference, and for recording my own thoughts. My inspiration for this deck came from several others, but the biggest one was jmdt's Chainer list.
Notes on the list:
- The number in front denotes casting cost, except for lands.
- The '*' means it's a foil copy.
- 48 out of 97 cards in the list are foil.
- No foils exist for Altar of Dementia, Infernal Tribute, or Phyrexian Tower.
- My play style focuses more on reanimating creatures from the yards of other people rather than my own. This is simply because I have already earned a well-deserved reputation for playing with graveyards, so I am much more likely to get targeted with Bojuka Bog than someone else at the table.
- 4 is the magic number in this deck. Some of the most powerful cards in this deck are at four mana, and all of them can be dug up with Dimir House Guard. I'm also looking into adding Fleshwrither for even more ways to dig up four-drops.
I switched to this deck from Geth for several reasons.
1. Geth brings guys back TAPPED, and that drawback has become incredibly relevant.
- What good is someone else's Sol Ring if it doesn't let me use it towards the next Geth activation?
- I used to run Amulet of Vigor (an otherwise useless card) just to try and get around this.
- Being able to reanimate a blocker in mid-combat is awesome.
2. Geth's ability costs a crap-load of mana, which forces me to be "all-in" on his ability and makes it harder to focus on other things.
3. Chainer is versatile enough to get stuff from my yard or from someone else's.
- This allows for two different possible styles of play. If there are a lot of green/creature decks at the table, I can go after their stuff. If not, I still run plenty of my own.
- Liliana version 1, 2: Both have relevant abilities, but I'm trying to keep a relatively low-profile with this deck. If I were to play more of these, I feel that I would need to run more blocking fodder like Bitterblossom or Bloodline Keeper.
- Bloodline Keeper: Good for making lots of fodder that also flies. If I ever need fodder that also flies (as opposed to ground guys), this will likely come in.
- Grave Titan: Very good at clogging up the ground, but I don't need that kind of fodder.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed: I cut this because too often I try to reanimate someone else's creatures, so Dark Mike would just give them back to the opponent.
- Nekrataal/Shriekmaw/etc: Not sure how many of these I need, or if either one is better/worse than Bone Shredder. The restrictions on it are a little cumbersome.
- Netherborn Phalanx: A black creature that transmutes and has a decent ability...sounds a lot like Dimir House Guard, except I don't run as many six-drops.
- Sadistic Hypnotist: Not sure if this is better or worse than Mind Slash.
- Soldevi Adnate: Sac outlet that provides a decent mana boost, but he has to tap, so he could be too slow.
- Viscera Seer: Cheap sac outlet, but the ability is not very useful.
- Batterskull: Great card for life-gain, I can sac the token and re-cast it, and there's a small chance it might equip something besides the Germ. If I have more problems with life-gain, this will be the first card to fix that.
- Caged Sun/other mana doublers: They generate too much hate for this deck, they aren't easy to get back, and my meta is full of Terastodons. At least the Revenant is a creature.
- Eldrazi Monument: I thought this would be a good way to protect me and Chainer from harm, but I never keep many creatures on the table for very long.
- Memory Jar: Usually a good way to mill 7 cards for each opponent, but it's a one-time use card that's hard to get back.
- Nevinyrral's Disk: Another potential answer for artifacts/enchantments.
- Smokestack: I'll admit I've never really tried it, but it always seemed really mean, like Obliterate. Then again, maybe that's the point.
- Spine of Ish Sah: If I ever need more non-creature removal, this is it.
- Attrition: It's a cheap sac outlet and it's removal, but the non-black clause seems very pesky.
- Strands of Night: I don't currently run Crucible, and I need as many lands in play as possible.
- Demonic Collusion/Increasing Ambition/other black tutors: There are so many black tutors that it's easy to dilute the overall card quality and just spend every turn tutoring.
- Plunge into Darkness: A sac outlet that also gains life, but it's a one-time use card and I'd probably never play the other half.
BSZ is awesome. It simply kills everything, including indestructibles, regenerators, hexproofs, persists, whatever. The only exception (which I haven't run into yet) is "undying".
Corpse Connoisseur only came into play once for me. I needed to dig up an answer to Ulamog, and he found me a Fleshbag Marauder that I reanimated. He's a creature version of Entomb.
Claws of Gix is a cheap sac outlet that also gains a little life. It's not the most broken ability ever printed, but I've lost a few games where I didn't leave a sac outlet available, so I try to cram as many as I can afford into this list. It's also nice when someone blows a Disk or an O-Stone and I can get some life out of my mana rocks. The subtle life-gain is always good, kinda like how Pristine Talisman works.
Thinking about adding the following to my list for next time:
- Sheoldred (managed to find one in a random pile of cards).
- Liliana of the Dark Realms, because I bought one and have yet to try her.
- Trading Post, cuz it's always awesome.
...and the following cards are on my chopping block:
- Graveborn Muse/Bloodgift Demon, because I don't like waiting to draw extra cards, and creatures are easier to remove than Phyrexian Arena.
- Reaper from the Abyss, because I never really want him and the odds are not high that he will survive long enough to do anything.
- Extractor Demon, again because I never really want him.
- Puppeteer Clique, because there's a chance I might not leave a sac outlet up and I don't like exiling graveyards.

I've never liked how Puppeteer clique exiles the cards it brings back. I much prefer playing with them several more turns or whenever I want.
Yeah reaper is the combo piece that just sits there when no other action is occurring. I finally talked myself into axing him.
I actually like Graveborn Muse/Bloodgift Demon. I have won games off the back of their draw before and their are easy enough to reanimate. I'd probably drop Graveborn Muse first just due to the lack of evasion.
I actually like the Disciple because he's a sac outlet AND a source of life-gain AND a creature.
I think for now I'll just cut the Reaper, Clique, and Extractor. I'm kinda on the fence about Liliana v3.
I've not ran her in my deck yet, but I have seen her in a friend's Olivia deck. When she ultimates, you win the game. If she is killed immediately, you payed 4 mana to draw a swamp. It all comes down to how well you think you can protect her. She has the best ultimate of the 3 lillies for EDH, but the other 2 have more relevant 1st and 2nd abilities most of the time. Lilly Vess is a nice potentially reusable tutor that doesn't draw too much attention (whenever I do tutor twice, I usually win) and lilly veil can lock down the field if everyone is close to top deck mode and she spams +1, while also letting us dump a fattie here or there. So yeah, Lilly dark realms has the greatest overall reward (ultimate), but the but the least initial return on investment.

I like Disciple as well. I like how he can gain pretty large chunks of life if you're sacrificing a fatty or two.
I also wanna say your deck list inspired me to run Pilgrim's Eye. I think its much better then a mana rock in a deck that runs coffers and its more creatures to chump with. Plus it always goes well with Skullclamp even under something like Caged Sun.

Thanks! As a former Geth player, I'm always looking for MOAR MANAZ. Both Pilgrim's Eye and Liliana's Shade are great for that.
On that note, looking for 5 more spots to fit in the foil Braids, Crypt Ghast, Undercity Informer, Ogre Slumlord, and eventually the black Primordial if I can find a cheap one (in that order). Current cards on the chopping block are:
- Mimic Vat: went back through this thread and realized that it's kinda meh in this deck. I haven't run into a case where I would want to put my own stuff under it, and I certainly don't wanna put someone else's stuff under it, since Chainer kinda does the same thing.
- Yawgmoth's Will: Back in the day, this would have been a blasphemous suggestion, but lately I'm not so sure. Maybe I just need to draw it more often...
- Liliana's Shade: It's a weaker Pilgrim's Eye (never gets inflated, can't fly), and I did just add the version of Liliana that digs up more lands, but I feel like creature spells > non-creature spells.
- Corpse Connoisseur: On one hand, I target everyone else but myself as much as possible. On the other hand, I only have five other tutors.
- Exsanguinate: Every other life-gain spell is either also a creature or also a sac outlet or also a "triggers on death" card. Most of the time I just use this to finish games.
- Mind Slash: The sorcery-speed thing really kills it for me, and Undercity Informer is also a sac outlet.

Mimic Vat is a great card, but I just dislike using it when Chainer does such a better job. I've been re-evaluating my list now that GTC is out and I'm not sure I want it to keep a slot.
Yawgmoth's Will is a black staple. However, not every black deck can as easily play around their graveyard as we can. With the combo of chainer and XHD, I can essentially mini Yawgmoth's will whenever I want AND the cards are not exiled.
Corpse Connoisseur wants to be a foil Graveborn Entomb so bad in this deck. Since entomb works at instant speed, it gives you options to work around sorcery speed grave hate and find that XHD or kokopuffs you need.
Exsanguinate is one of the best win cons we have for this deck. I can't imagine it losing its slot
Mind Slash is great in theory and sorcery speed is one of the better options we have, but I agree it is somewhat disappointing. Since it A) isn't free and B) isn't sorcery speed it is probably on the chopping block for my next round of cuts. I'm debating on swapping it for Sadistic Hypnotist. For 5 mana they do the same thing and afterwards, hippie is generally better.
I used rager in my MBC deck during the last standard. Its best use was stuck on mimic vat, lol. I can't imagine paying 4 life and 3 mana to draw 1 card. That's worse then even sylvan library.
I debated between Mind Slash and Sad Hippie for awhile, and I think I went with Mind Slash because I couldn't find any Sad Hippies in my bulk bins. Either way, sorcery-speed is a real drag.
Now that you mention it, paying 3 life plus an extra 1 or 2 just to draw some more cards does seem like a pretty steep price. Maybe I was wrong about these guys.
The time has come to acquire some foil Swamps for this deck. Until recently, I've been using Snow-Covered Swamps that were left over from when I ran Extraplanar Lens and Geth was my commander. Now that I'm fully invested in Chainer, I think it's time for an upgrade. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear about them.

My suggestion, any player playing Mono black in EDH should have bought a Graveborn deck. Those foil swamps are BEAUTIFUL! I traded for 7-10 more and that's what I run for basic lands in my Chainer.
I've never liked how Puppeteer clique exiles the cards it brings back. I much prefer playing with them several more turns or whenever I want.
I'm going to be honest, sometimes that's WHY I like Clique. A player abusing Body Double on a Sylvan Primordial or some type of Sun Titan shenanigans. A decent answer is to Clique it away. I don't always have to play the Clique just becasue I don't have a sac outlet and typically I'm not to upset on exiling just a creature or two. I find it's upside is way more than the downside (which sometimes isn't even a downside).
