Volrath the Fallen "I stepped out. I did not step down."
This list has been tuned quite a bit, but I am always open for ideas on making it better and more fun. The theme is combo, one hit kill and reanimation.
25/09/2011 Mimic Vat -> Grimoire of the Dead - The vat always dies or removes cards from my graveyard. I want to see how explosive the book can be in multiplayer. Syphon Mind -> Bloodgift Demon - SM is a variable only MP card. The BG should have more utility, but if it doesn't, I'll debate restoring SM at cost of Praetor's Grasp.
4/10/2011 Lashwrithe -> Rings of Brighthearth - I am trying to avoid being taken advantage of by Mindslaver, which Phyrexian mana allows. Rings of Brighthearth also allows my general to use it's ability twice, which means only one good sized creature is really needed of 8 CMC or above. A lot of creatures have activated abilities, which makes the rings feel like a must.
23/10/11 Praetor's Grasp -> Buried Alive - After reading the Star City Games free newsletter, I agreed with the idea about Buried Alive. It works well with this deck and synergises with Pharoh and Filth.
20/11/11 Eldrazi Temple -> Eye of Ugin - On suggestions I will switch them around and give eye another go. Thran Dynamo -> Wayfarer's Bauble - The Bauble will be good as it ramps up coffers too, hopefully it will accelerate deck a turn too.
22/11/11 Grimoire of the Dead -> Dragon Shadow - Seems quite obvious and helps give general evasion for free. This will help refocus general back to being goal of deck.
05/06/2013 Necrotic Ooze -> Basalt Monolith - I have resisted for a while, but local area has too much combo decks. This is to meet that trend by adding a secondary combo to the deck, beyond the standard "Helm-Leyline".
21/12/2014 Magus of the Coffers -> Soul of Innistrad - The Magus of was never being used and a low priority tutor and reanimation target. Soul of Innistrad is useful both in my hand and graveyard and an overdue inclusion.
- Nekrataal - I understand this card is fantastic at card advantage and fits my general's theme, but I've moved away from low-end creatures that don't serve a ramp or graveyard based purpose. Shriekmaw and Big Game Hunter, serve as all the required removal for now.
- Dragon's Shadow - I would still use this, but currently have no space for it and are focusing on alternative methods for unblockability. It is still very strong and could find a place in many builds of Volrath, the Fallen.
The list has been modified considerably since its first posting, but mostly in streamlining it and finding the best options. Black now has a lot of ways to try get around the singleton nature of the format with numerous tutors, as many wraths as white and the most ways to get big mana relatively quickly.
Some important things to note:
1. I do not own an Imperial Seal or have a spare Grim Tutor and can't afford them currently.
2. I know about Draco as a one hit kill, but choose not to use it as I feel the card has no value on its own and the creature quality should be sufficient most of the time.
The Deck
The win conditions are normally:
1. Big mana and casting a powerful spell or drain life variant - this isn't overly exiting, but many decks build to this kind of conclusion and it allows many opportunities to be stopped.
2. General kill in one or two hits - this will take more than one creature, but there are ways to recur them and to protect Volrath. Rings of Brighthearth allows creatures with CMC 8 to be lethal when pitched, while without it 15 is the magic number.
3. Helm Leyline combo - I rarely do this though as it's somewhat abrupt and it's my answer to more spikish play groups.
4. Infinite mana via Rings of Brighthearth and Basalt Monolith - Can be used to Exsanguinate or other fun things.
5. Control the board - Mono Black Control is very strong and after so many wraths, destroying their hands or annihilating them, you will win.
6. Reanimation of large threats, and with Makeshift Mannequin the ones that would otherwise shuffle back in.
Not surprisingly the deck can be slow in starting, but can rapidly become a big threat once coffers is online. Alternatively one can draw or search for the combo pieces and remove the players starting with the blue ones or those best able to respond.

The list is updated and I will be cutting one land. It's not exactly original, but what do people think?
Normally my list manages to do something impressive quickly and either establsh dangerous board position or get an eldrazi out to threaten one player. The combo kill is used rarely, but can be a quick way to end a game.
I'm seeking Geth still and Vampiric tutor. Other tutors are a bit pricy for me.

Volrath is a bit of a forgotten general right now, but is still one of my old stalwarts.
New Phyrexia added a lot of nice new tricks for mono black and so I made these changes on top of some upgrading:
Sadistic Sacrament into Praetor's Grasp - It's good having ability to remove cards from other's decks, but stealing for your own use is even better.
Grafted Exoskeleton into Lashwrithe - Nightmare Lash had no option but to pay life. I like this as a living equipment and pain free option. Unfortunately Mindslaver still hurts. I find poison a bit distasteful and the equipment was always two for oneing me.
Draco into Sheoldred, Whispering One - The black praetor is obviously incredible, I needed to use it and what other than the only card that exists to one hit someone. Living the dream is nice, but using two smaller cards is just as easy, so no need to waste a slot on Draco.
Gatekeeper of Malakir into Chancellor of the Dross - Gatekeeper is still a good card, but I wanted something big to replace the Draco I was losing, and the turn 0 option would be incredible. The chancellor has an efficient body which makes him useful late game too.
Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon into Caged Sun - My play style changed from attempting poison to attempting to create as much redundancy as possible. Adding in the new mana doubler over a creature that rarely ever kills seems like a step up to me.
Over time I found out I was drawing too many lands, so land count is trimmed and I found Eldrazi and people wiping out my graveyard made Oversold Cemetery rarely trigger, so it was also removed. I don't need for O-stone or disk, my board control normally works, including considerable answers to the graveyard.
What are people's thoughts on my mono black control take?

Living death helps everyone else a bit too much for my liking unless I managed to do it after Leyline. Life's Finale is an option though, I'll consider it, thank you.
I really like Massacre Wurm. It's either a token sweeper (which my deck can tutor for in a lot of ways), an evenly costed body that can be pitched or a deterrent from playing creatures once their life reaches a certain point. Recurring it from the graveyard is even better when they think they were safe to try go big with tokens. So, I like it.

Few have commented for ages now, but I added Dark Hatchling in over Chancellor of the Dross. I don't view the land that returns creatures as a concern, but if I can acquire one, I'll likely replace Eldrazi Temple with it. I've observed my artifact ramp is insufficient generally, so I'll likely upgrade it (Coalition Relic, Thran Dynamo, maybe Gilded Lotus, removing Ingot and Chalice), feedback is always welcome on how to improve direction.

Geth could have a place. I like the Dark Hatchling because it is so expensive, it's got a big cost, and is a more powerful Shriekmaw basically. I'll muse about which creature could go. I'll try that then over Consume Spirit, until I work out what I dislike next in deck.

Could maybe look at Praetor's Grasp for a possible cut as in many cases it's only going to net you an artifact or knock out one combo piece.
Nekrataal might be a nice addition to the deck, and might be able to replace one of your single target spells. You don't have much in the way of spell recursion, but everyone knows black is the bee's knees when it comes to getting creatures from the yard. Also he's carrying a 4 CMC.
I like the deck though, looks like it would be fun to play.

I like the Praetor's Grasp, but it is definitely random. Hmm. I have only only one targeted removal as is I guess, not sure if I need it as an out to decks like Mimeoplasm, it is a valid direction though.
Thank you for feedback too, last time I didn't get a fraction of these responses.

I think it could have potential.

I've decided against IGG for now, since I am loathe to help others deal with my threats unless I have a leyline in play. I may change my opinion in future or use Yawg's Will.
I've been focusing more heavilly on my newer decks and had put this one down, but I will be reworking on it, to make it more competitive. If people have ideas I would love to consider them if you'll share. I understand this general is a less common mono black one, but he is one of the best in my opinion.

Eye of Ugin creates a loop of pain with any of the legendary eldrazi.
This deck has had no love for ages from people, thank you for posting.
I ran the Eye for ages, but not tapping for mana was frustrating. I could easilly throw it back in over the Temple to try make it a bit more competitive. I really want Volrath to work and be interesting again, even if he is my oldest general.

I really like the look of the list. A couple of additional thoughts.
I seem to run into a lot of mono-Black decks, and Gauntlet of Power is often too symmetrical for my liking. Have you had issues with this?
How much land destruction do you face? My thought is that you might want to invest more into cards like Armillary Sphere or something similar. I just see that you are running Thran Dynamo and Worn Powerstone, and every time I try to run them they get blown up due to splash damage.
It may not be the most sexy card out there and people probably think only newbs play it, but Loxodon Warhammer is worth considering. It helps in the late game when you are down on life, and can go on many of the large dudes you play to give you some additional life gain. This would even help out with an additional draw option like Necropotence.
Has Necrotic Ooze been pulling its weight? Just curious.
Just some ideas that you probably already thought of.

25/09/2011
Mimic Vat -> Grimoire of the Dead - The vat always dies or removes cards from my graveyard. I want to see how explosive the book can be in multiplayer.
Syphon Mind -> Bloodgift Demon - SM is a variable only MP card. The BG should have more utility, but if it doesn't, I'll debate restoring SM at cost of Praetor's Grasp.
4/10/2011
Lashwrithe -> Rings of Brighthearth - I am trying to avoid being taken advantage of by Mindslaver, which Phyrexian mana allows. Rings of Brighthearth also allows my general to use it's ability twice, which means only one good sized creature is really needed of 8 CMC or above. A lot of creatures have activated abilities, which makes the rings feel like a must.
22/10/11
Wasteland -> Homeward Path - Three LD lands was too many and HP card fits this deck quite well. Dust Bowl was retained as it was reusable in the absence of Crucible of Worlds.
23/10/11
Praetor's Grasp -> Buried Alive - After reading the Star City Games free newsletter, I agreed with the idea about Buried Alive. It works well with this deck and synergises with Pharoh and Filth.
20/11/11
Eldrazi Temple -> Eye of Ugin - On suggestions I will switch them around and give eye another go.
Thran Dynamo -> Wayfarer's Bauble - The Bauble will be good as it ramps up coffers too, hopefully it will accelerate deck a turn too.
22/11/11
Grimoire of the Dead -> Dragon Shadow - Seems quite obvious and helps give general evasion for free. This will help refocus general back to being goal of deck.
23/11/11
Swamp -> Verdant Catacombs - Upgrading swamp to reduce land draws.
30/06/12
Drana, Kalistra Highborn -> Crucible of Worlds - A control card for insurance against land destruction.
Geth, Keeper of the Vault -> Increasing Ambition - A great tutor that will work here here over a sometimes marginal card.
07/09/2012
Bloodgift Demon -> Lilianna of the Dark Realms
02/10/2012
Swamp -> Rogue's Passage
Homeward Path -> Petrified Field
Kagemaro, First to Suffer -> Marsh Flats
Rend Flesh -> Murder
Profane Command -> Kokusho, the Evening Star
10/03/2013
Lilianna of the Dark Realms -> Crypt Ghast
01/04/2013
Dust Bowl -> Charcoal Diamond
Dragon Shadow -> Animate Dead
Liliana Vess -> Sepulchral Primeordial
05/06/2013
Necrotic Ooze -> Basalt Monolith - I have resisted for a while, but local area has too much combo decks. This is to meet that trend by adding a secondary combo to the deck, beyond the standard "Helm-Leyline".
02/08/2013
Vengeful Pharoh -> Hatred - I removed this long ago when I was holding back, I just like the capacity to kill from nowhere.
Beacon of Unrest -> Diabolic Revelation - Tutoring is important.
18/10/2013
Ambition's Cost -> Ancient Craving - It's easier to get a black bordered Ancient Craving, thus I changed Ambition's Cost for a functional reprint.
15/11/2013
Imp's Mischief -> Coldsteel Heart - This may be an error, but more ramp is needed.
Promise of Power -> Whip of Erebos - Whip works well with Volrath activated ability.
Vesuva -> Thespian's Stage - More versatile, although both may have a role.
17/11/2014
Worn Powerstone -> Everflowing Chalice - Both ramp, but one enables earlier plays and scales later in the game.
Visara, the Dreadful -> Dance of the Dead - More reanimation will strengthen the theme.
Murder -> Hero's Downfall - More planeswalkers around these days and more versatile at same cost.
Ancient Craving -> Underworld Connections - Longer term card advantage has proven more useful in my experience for decks that aim to control like this one.
Diabolic Revelation -> Necropotence - I have several tutors, so removing one for a very strong draw spell like Necropotence is an easy choice. This may be the wrong tutor to remove, but time will tell.
24/11/2014
Swamp -> Polluted Delta - Upgrade on land base. It also works with Crucible of Worlds.
29/11/2014
Temple of the False God -> Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx - Potentially a better source of ramp and less conditional.
18/12/2014
Eye of Ugin -> Bloodstained Mire
21/12/2014
Nezumi Graverobber -> Ill-Gotten Gains
21/12/2014
Magus of the Coffers -> Soul of Innistrad - The Magus of was never being used and a low priority tutor and reanimation target. Soul of Innistrad is useful both in my hand and graveyard and an overdue inclusion.
01/02/2014
Swamp -> Arcane Lighthouse - Maybe one swamp too many! Time will tell. Rogue's Passage is other debatable cut here.
11/01/2015
Swamp -> Dimir House Guard - A new tutor.
21/01/2015
Shriekmaw -> Mind Stone
Swamp -> Crystal Vein
20/08/2015
Sheoldred, Whispering One -> Deathbringer Regent
07/11/2016
Arcane Lighthouse -> Mirrorpool
Avatar of Woe -> Diabolic Revelation
Big Game Hunter -> Reanimate
Chainer, Dementia Master -> Night's Whisper
Deathbringer Regent -> Kozilek, the Great Distortion
Hatred -> Withering Boon
Ill-Gotten Gains -> Dark Petition
Myojin of Night’s Reach -> Void Winnower
Soul of Innistrad -> Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
Thespian's Stage -> Geier Reach Sanitarium
Underworld Connections -> Slaughter Pact
Whip of Erebos -> Entomb
Whispersilk Cloak -> Emrakul, the Promised End
Removed at some point since update, but not sure what for: Caged Sun, Quicksilver Amulet.
Cards that have been suggested, but not used
- Dragon's Shadow - I would still use this, but currently have no space for it and are focusing on alternative methods for unblockability. It is still very strong and could find a place in many builds of Volrath, the Fallen.

Current cards being considered:Cruel Tutor, Mana Crypt (if I can get a new one), Toxic Deluge, Mana Vault, Languish and Xiao Dun, the One-Eyed.
I am always keen on feedback, please respond!

Gilded Lotus can help with ramp, and Sadistic Sacrament can help beat up combo players. Suffer the Past can hurt people and stop recursion.
Rhystic Tutor seems pretty weak. Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Grim Tutor are all better choices.
Oversold Cemetary can help with your recursion, and allow you to pitch another fatty to Volrath. Seems fun. Good luck!

I really like Massacre Wurm. It's either a token sweeper (which my deck can tutor for in a lot of ways), an evenly costed body that can be pitched or a deterrent from playing creatures once their life reaches a certain point. Recurring it from the graveyard is even better when they think they were safe to try go big with tokens. So, I like it.

Have you tried using Geth, Lord of the Vault? Feels like he belongs in this deck for the same reason the Helm of Obedience does.
Dark Hatchling seems a little expensive for what it does and might be worth pulling.

I think it could have potential.
This is a bit delayed, but I havent tried it. I'll see if I can get one relatively cheaply, by the same token Yawg's Will would be good too wouldn't it?
After M12 I took out Dark Hatchling and Strata Scythe for Rune-Scarred Demon and Vengeful Pharoh. I really can't imagine a better card for this general than the pharoh either!

This deck has had no love for ages from people, thank you for posting.
I ran the Eye for ages, but not tapping for mana was frustrating. I could easilly throw it back in over the Temple to try make it a bit more competitive. I really want Volrath to work and be interesting again, even if he is my oldest general.
I guess I'll try and maybe throw in Sundering Titan and potentially Dark Ritual.
