I'm trying to build an edh deck around Tariel, Reckoner of Souls. I'd like it to be a slower defensive deck, centered around cards like Martyr's Bond and Glory of Warfare, but I'm having trouble creating a early game/mid game.
the deck is here
Currently I'm trying to make the deck theme "Go f**ck yourself" with abilities from cards like; War's toll and Stranglehold to hamper my opponents, and the above to trade blows. Other themes I was liking were:
Lifelink- Serra Ascendant/Felidar Sovereign True Conviction
Rakdos style martyrdom- Martyr's Bond, Rakdos and Karmic Justice
It isn't budget by any stretch, but your best bet would be to drop the early plays and put in a bunch of wrath effects. Ideally, you'd want to be able to wrath twice, simultaneously stopping their offense while stocking up graveyards for Tariel's ability. A friend had a Tariel deck like that and it was very effective.
Also, Bringer of the White Dawn is an illegal card in your deck.
Cards like Obliterate and Jokulhaups can land you on the s***list pretty fast. I'd cut them or put this deck in the Competitive forum.
Destroying your own permanents doesn't trigger Karmic Justice. Butcher of Malakir might be a suitable replacement.
Thornbite Staff is a killer combo with Tariel. Whenever any creature dies, Tariel gets to untap and steal another creature, and if you have any sacrifice outlets, like Blasting Station or Goblin Bombardment, you can go infinite and win right there. That's how I played Tariel (using as many equipment tutors and black tutors to find the Staff) until I shifted that deck into using Oros, the Avenger.
@voracious: Those cards are REALLY expensive. i don't see how this deck wouldnt be "competitive" if i ran all those expensive board wipes, but not oblit/jokul.
i know self destruct doesn't trigger Karmic Justice, but my permanents in a given game are likely going to be destroyed by other players.
@comicalflop: thornbite staff is perfect! i totally forgot about that card, since I just got a free kiki jiki online it would go great here!
im not sure about your list, i would make some drastic cut in it.
I dont think you need Replenish and stuff like that, you need to kill creatures, reanimate them, and sacrifice them for something. This is what i would do with Tariel anyway.
Magus of the Abyss and that kind of cards would fit great, and are easy to find.
I would indeed put some wrath effect, and things to protect Tariel of them (darksteel plate)
Also, I think Hell s Caretaker could be interesting to add to the list.
And maybe you could had some lower manacost creatures, it would help protecting you while you build your manabase to cast your big guys.

In EDH, most players despise having their lands destroyed. Cards like Obliterate, Jokulhaups, Armageddon, and Ravages of War are generally not received well and are especially frowned upon in "casual" formats, whereas wrath-effects are almost expected.
As for the expensive cards, switch Life's Finale for Damnation, and the wrath's total up to $15.67 (based on MOTL average prices).
Day of Judgment $1.24
Wrath of God $2.59
Rout $3.10
Austere Command $1.48
Barter in Blood $0.37 Damnation Life's Finale $0.60
Oblivion Stone $1.88
Akroma's Vengeance $1.14
Planar Cleansing $0.46
Nevinyrral's Disk $2.81
