He is the most "powerful" creature in magic. Everyone wants him.
Top cards used in Legacy (from deckcheck.net):
1. Force of Will
2. Brainstorm
3. Island
4. Wasteland
5. Tarmogoyf
He has also averaged about the 5th mosted used card in Extended since release (most used creature).
I'm hoping though that with extended season being done, he will go back down to at least $30 and if I'm lucky, lower. He went down to about $25 last year. But, I have never seen him this high before. I don't remember standard prices though.
Most powerful creature doesnt warrent 80 dollars when its not 10 years old (wizards dont have printing problems anymore)... Superman/morphling never reached 80 dollars and Psychatog never seen 5 dollars when it was called the most powerful creature in the game. Even Duals never worth as much when it was legal in extended.
I think somebody has a monkey hold on some cards and figured how to fixxed the card market, or there are more magic players then before.
This can be it's own thread but I can answer it to a degree. I'm told it's major vendors that jack up the price and create pseudo demand. Sometimes, yes, people make runs on specific hard to obtain cards -- but other times, it's the speculation that's driving card prices through the roof.
If you base your prices off online vendors, then YES, mtg has seen a HUGE increase in legacy prices but if you visit a store, prices have not gone up that much.
Not good for me as all the vendors around here base their prices on internet ones. I only end up with a deal if they, for example put an Intuition in the 50 cent box, haha.

Goofy is WAY more popular that either of those creatures you've mentioned. When you have people splashing green in goblins for him, thats a bit nuts. I've seen affinity decks running him! The general rule of thumb is (not counting combo) if you have green mana, you run him. If you dont, you splash green and run him.
Has far as the humber of magic players, there does seem to be more than ever. Seems they keep breaking the record with event turnouts again and again the past few years. I thought the record being broken in Chicago with over 1200 people was big! Then not even a whole year later there was one with over 2200!!
I think you can put that little green arrow in storage for a while.

Updated Aggro Elves...put in the Time Stamp that you wanted Necro...also helps me with a list of decks that still need updating....And I guess that's it. Carry on.
Ok! Haven't seen a lot of action going on in this thread, and now that school's over, guess what? DING DING DING THAT'S CORRECT! PRICE UPDATES! And thank CosmoKramer for all the help he's been giving - EvaGreen's list has been updated
Note: Should I just link the deck to the threads associated with them instead of just trying to summarize how they play? Opinions count! That's how the Timestamp was started!
Yes. A link seems like the best choice. The amount of research a person will need to do when going to buy a deck is more than you can accomplish with a summary. That said, a single line boiler plate version seems like a good plan as a reminder of what deck it is.
example of one possible format: ANT (U/B.Tendrils.storm.combo)
EDIT: also, a general sequence might be a good idea. Perhaps if the cheaper decks were clustered at the top, leading down to the more expensive builds...
Where are people seeing FOW for $25? I can't find it for less than $45

Wow, today I was searching through some Legacy card prices and I saw that Eureka has skyrocketed with some sellers trying to sell it at $179 each at the high end. This card was $25-$30 a couple of months ago...
What happened? Is there an actual deck for it now or is it just people trying to take a huge chance with the enormously speculative market that Legacy has turned into and hoping the fish will bite?

What's going on?
A pretty good legacy deck based around eureka and show and tell made headlines with a way to cheat in a turn 1 emrakrul or progenitus. Besides, its still legacy season so all the old cards are going to be expensive as heck, give it a few months and prices will drop again, prices for many cards are dropping quite a bit like alot of ones for the reanimator deck...month or 2 ago Sphinx of the Steel wind was going for 10-15 (i saw one for 20 but i think thats an anomoly) now theyre under 10. Also, its a decent legends card and all the good legends cards cost an arm and a leg!

If you see someone playing a control deck, the following strategy is considered acceptable: 1) Slowly reach upward 2) Grab your opponent firmly by the throat 3) Squeeze 4) ???? 5) Profit...and a fountain of red Kool Aid!!!

Hmm an experimental deck that hasn't made a mark on the competitive scene yet doesn't really validate a 3x-6x increase in value of a card over 5 or so months. That's really excessive inflation of the card's value just because it could maybe become competitively playable.
At $30 it was already a pretty highly valued card for Legends. Now it is officially the highest value Green card in Magic... luckily I already own a playset, but its scary what is happening to the prices of cards based on speculation.
I think the prices at SCG are a little high. If you use ebay you can build most of those deck for far less. Just sayin'.
I've always been afraid to use ebay because I'm always afraid of getting scammed. Sometimes the prices seem too good to be true
Should I not really worry about it?
It's prices like this and cards like Jace, the Mind Sculptor, Force of Will, and Baneslayer Angel that make me think some sellers like Starcity, Cardkingdom, Coolstuffinc, TrollandToad, Cardshark, etc send people to forums to jack up prices.
Sure Jace and Slayer are standard cards, a format where speculation runs a ton more than it should. But Eureka and Force? What happened? I played Forces a year ago and got them for a reasonable 25 dollars. Now they push 50, rising. The power of group speculation is absolutely absurd.
I wouldn't complain about this (I own a lot of these cards and can make lots of profit off of them) but it makes an already expensive game more inaccessible when we need new legacy and extended players to keep the formats alive, and this really saddens me to see this. Fortunately, Legacy is the least affected by this.
Yeah, my friend built a Dredge deck for about $70 because he had a few of the cards needed for it. LEDless Dredge can work, as proven by my friends Top 8 Performance with it (then again he is the only one running dredge in the store) but sometimes it can get easily hosed (Enchantress can lock it, SB from any deck will wreck him if they get their hate before he does...etc)
Anywho, most of the decks on here you can use a simple algorithm:
Based on the base color of the deck, you spend about....
-Red: $50 (depending on what red you plan to use)
-Blue: $100
-Green: $200 (thank Tarmogoyf for that)
-Black: $30
-White: $50 (again, depending on what you use)
-Colorless: $150
Going from there, it's about $80-100 per extra color you decide to add to the base color.
Lets see if I'm right, a Merfolk deck is going to be Monoblue, with some artifact splashed in. Only artifacts splashed in would be Vials, and that's about 40-50. Blue says it costs 100, so a Merfolk deck with Vials might cost around $150. Sound about right guys? or do I need to to some fine-tweaking to my math....this was just a rough idea

One thing that might be helpful is adding a date to each deck when you edit them. The "(recent)" tag isn't incredibly informative.
