Ooh. Looks like it has to be Grafted, right? That thing's a finisher even in non-Infect decks.
I see Prom's point, though - and Grafted leads to 2 for 1's when it is destroyed, as I've learned from the rules FAQ. If the Exoskeleton is destroyed/leaves the battlefield for any reason, the creature it is equipped to bites the dust as well.
Still a powerful card, I think.
Beginning to rethink the above based on how the creature gets 2 for 1'ed. Is the card's power worth the risk?
Hmmm this is a very nice pack. Lots of good choices <.<
Definetly between Tempered Steel and Oxidda scrapmelter. I think white and red are the two best colors as well so I am willing to go into either color with no problem. Scrapmelter leads to a 2 for 1 which is great, tempered steel makes all the little artifacts big, and all the big artifacts huge.
No matter how we look at it we put the person next to us into either white or red. The second seat next to you will end up with the shatter or exoskeleton. Both of the red cards will hurt the deck we are going to try and build if we take tempered steel, but I still feel like it has to be the pick. The +2/+2 is just too good to pass up, making mana myrs hill giants is amazing. As pick one we can draft a deck to utilize it to a greater extent then if we just happened into it later.
scrapmelter is good but there are plenty of effects that can deal with pesky artifacts. Tempered steel OTOH is a game-changing bomb as soon as it hits play and turns chump blockers into attackers.
This one shouldn't even be close.

Tempered Steel is forcing W Metalcraft because you need to be heavy white to play it and you need to have at least half artifact men. Neither of these are guaranteed, where as we will play Scapmelter as a splash.
I don't even think Tempered Steel is more powerful then Oxidda Scrapmelter. If I was WR Metalcraft, I'd take the Scrapmelter. To me the tough choice would be Shatter vs Tempered Steel. Hopefully the guy to our left doesn't take the Shatter.
And Grafted Exoskeloton is just setting yourself up for a 2 for 1. Playable, but not a first pick, imo.

Personally I like red aggro better than white. More 2-for-1's, more removal, and if you get cut off, Red/green, red/blue, red/white are ALL good decks.
I've been very impressed with white and red so far from the SoM limited I've played, but based on my small experience with the set so far, red is the color that I personally want to be in, and card advantage and removal are why.

I'll be sad if people don't start calling The Chain Veil "Fleetwood Mac."
I voted for Oxidda Scrapmelter since I can't imagine cutting it from anything but a tremendous maindeck. Exoskeleton is a close second, followed by Tempered Steel and Shatter.
This looks like a very strong pack. Scrapmelter seems both good and more splashable than Tempered Steel. Assuming Exoskeleton isn't close enough in power to justify the extra flexibility, I favour Scrapmelter.

I agree. We're probably putting 2/3 guys to our left into red because of the Shatter and Oxidda scrapmelter. And we may see the Origin Spellbomb back.
Scrapmelter doesn't require a color commitment. However, Tempered Steel is worth committing for. This was a really, really good pack. I would be happy with either card.
Don't forget that in this set color commitment isn't as important. With tempered steel we are commited to white in the sense that we need 2 plains up. But the deck itself is an artifact deck. In white we will look for removal and some metalcraft, but artifacts that are usually good, become great. Mana myr of all colors are now top picks, they were already up there but far more so with tempered steel. Splashing any color should, theoretically, be much easier in a deck with tempered steel as we would skew our pick order slightly more toward artifacts.
The scrapmelter is enticing because it's an almost guaranteed 2 for 1 and lots of the bombs of this set are artifacts.
The enchantment is also enticing because if we can draft an almost mono-artifact deck this will make all of our myrs into 2 mana hill giants and any other bombs we open into gigantic beaters.
So, overall the scrapmelter is the more consistent card, but I feel that the tempered steel has enough of an upside to be better in a deck built around it.
My pick goes to the scrapmelter as with that card we keep all of our options open and get a solid 2 for 1 for any deck we make.
I don't know what you think this game's purpose is, but I play it because I figure it's the best way to learn how to hex everyone I don't like and summon dragons to do my bidding.
It hasn't worked yet, but I have high hopes for my future abilities as an occult practitioner.
It depends really. If you're going to force the Infest deck then you're going to take the Grafted Exoskeleton. If you're wanting to be the beatdown then taking the Tempered Steel and riding cheap artifact creatures is the way to go.
Shatter is the safe first pick. Always splashable, always usable in this format. Then there is the Scrapmelter. Fine first pick, but be aware that passing shatter with no other good red could and should get you cut off in pack two.
My pick? Scrapmelter, even though I want to force Infest
We are passing a Scrapmelter AND a shatter. This should be enough to push the player on our left into Red. Once we know that we can make our picks with more understanding of the repercussions.
I saw we take Exo and stay away from Red.
This also gives us the bonus of not having the player to our right open a koth and completely screw us.
Tempered Steel really? Guys comon that is way to color intensive for a first pick.
Exoskeleton. It requires no color commitment. Poison is also a house in this format. I have had the exoskeleton used against me, and it has won me games as well. I would definitely first pick it.
I believe that I have enough social competence to slip into a party or two, potentially wooing some attractive females that would not mind spending the evening performing the booty dance on me.
I think that Exoskeleton is inconsistent enough that I would rather take Scrapmelter or Tempered Steel over it. The Exoskeleton CAN be good, but is also really really easily 2-for-1'd in this format, by multiple commons spread throughout all the colors. As others have said, the pick for me is between Scrapmelter and Tempered Steel.
Tempered Steel is insane in the base-W metalcraft deck. Whereas, as others have noted, Scrapmelter is splashable so it can be played no matter what. So basically it's a standard consistency vs power issue. I think Scrapmelter is fine here. The Steel can win us the game in the right deck, but is not always good, whereas Scrapmelter is always good. This pick feels a lot like Ajani Vs Mind Control, and I would always pick Mind Control.
There are 30 people who are wrong so far. It goes BOMBS, removal...
BTW, Exoskeleton isn't even a debatable third. Paying 6 mana to get 2-for-1ed by Shatter is not exactly on the same order as giving half to 2/3rds of your creatures +2/+2 on turn 3. I dislike Honor of the Pure in Draft. This is as far from Honor of the Pure as Grave Titan is from Rotting Legion.
This is going to be really, really funny in a month or two.
P.S. Feel free to quote me in your sig. I'm not wrong
If this forum had Greasers, Phoenix, Commons and Semantics would be the leaders of the gang and every time they commented on something they would do a synchronized finger snap then smoke a cigarette.

"BREAD" is not gospel, good sir. Tempered Steel is a conditional bomb. As the poster below you said, if we fail to support it, it is worthless.
BSA is a bomb. If you play White, you run it because it is the nuts. Tempered Steel is a conditional bomb. If it is not supported, it is useless.
And really, how high are you going to pick Mana Myr to support this? An army of 3/3 cheap Myr... if you should be fortunate enough to draw the card you are building the deck around. Unwise limited strategy, IMO.
Have you ever considered the possibility that 30 people are right and you are wrong?
I don't know who is right and who is wrong in this discussion, because I will be the first to admit that I do not know how to draft the new set... but saying that people who oppose you are "wrong" is what an extremist does.

exoskeleton seems way too risky, and i dont want to pigeon-hole into infect.
Trying to avoid involving myself in this draft too much, but this statement is very misguided. Grafted Exoskeleton does not pigeonhole a deck into infect. At all. The Exoskeleton is a clock once you get it on a creature (and a fast one- 4 turns for a 1/x, 3 turns for a 2/x, 2 turns for a 3/x). That's it- in no way does it demand other infect support.
Now, it can be risky, but that's very different from forcing a deck into an archetype.

Ahh... wishing I got the West Side Story reference (if I'm right?). Or, perhaps it's better off that I don't. Oh wait, that's Sharks and Jets, isn't it?
Regardless, I think Cardoc has to fit into the gang somewhere. Can we make him the guy who leads the big song?
It depends really. If you're going to force the Infest deck then you're going to take the Grafted Exoskeleton. If you're wanting to be the beatdown then taking the Tempered Steel and riding cheap artifact creatures is the way to go.
no reason to force infest when you get a sick sick card like scrapmelter or tempered steel. both are insane. i take melter because it's a bit more flexable... though steel may be slightly stronger, it's too close to call. might as well take the guy that goes in every deck
spoiler warning. grated skeleton is only about the 5th or 6th best card in this pack. i really can't see a case for it. if oxida melter was not in teh pack, the choice would be steel. with steel gone, it'd be shatter. after that our choices are perilous myr and then probably origin spell bomb. the gear is probably better than untamed might though.
also, melter is not a risk. it makes the deck roughly 100% of the time. if guy to my right picks koth, then i still play melter. splashing is really easy in this format. just snag an iron myr or horizon spell bomb pack 2 and we're off to the races. melter is an awesome 'only red card.' people splash for fireball all the time in a format where half your deck isn't colourless. hill giant attached to maelstorm pulse is worth the spalsh.
Over the next month, we in the Limited forum will draft a deck and discuss picks and strategy about the new format, SoM.

This format is all about 2 for 1's, and most decks just can't beat a scrapmelter. Worst case scenario, it's a hill giant.
Tempered Steel could be good, too. A bunch of 3/3 myr and 3/5 replicas... hm.
I really like red in this format, I still say scrapmelter.
I see Prom's point, though - and Grafted leads to 2 for 1's when it is destroyed, as I've learned from the rules FAQ. If the Exoskeleton is destroyed/leaves the battlefield for any reason, the creature it is equipped to bites the dust as well.
