With the release of Innistrad, Grenadier is back! Before it got 4 pages of lovin', and it only gets better with Innistrad (former thread took a trip to the archives).
THIS IS A CONTROL DECK. PLAY IT LIKE ANYTHING ELSE AND YOU WILL NOT DO WELL.
To the newcomers: Grenadier is a deck that abuses Perilous Myr, Doomed Traveler, & others (i.e. Roc Egg, Goblin Arsonist, and Myr Sire). Should be fun with Doomed in. What is it abused with??? Well…
Honestly, I'm liking it a lot better without Elspeth. If you have your heart set on playing a quick-recover tokeny deck with her and Sylvok Lifestaff, try this. Won't be as competetive but just as fun. NOTE: IF YOU WANT TO PLAY ELSPETH MORE COMPETETIVELY THAN THE BELOW LIST, JUST PUT HER IN THE ABOVE ONE.
Last 5 match-ups:
UB Draw-Go (2-0): Sweet hands
Township Tokens (2-1)
UW Control (2-1)
Wolf Run (0-2): Manascrew both times
Wolf Run (2-1)
NOCTAL (2-0)
Olivia's Jund (2-0) Olivia's Jund is no match for this deck. I like the results displayed at this section!
Discard (2-0) Further discussion.
Gobbs (2-0)
Invisiblade (2-0)
Discard (1-2) I mulled down to 5 game 1...
I'm going to wait until I see the meta to add a sideboard. Elspeth is really nice as not only an extra board wipe, but some great post-wipe abilities.
WORK IN PROGRESS
I feel that I've played enough against some archetypes to warrant this.
Gobbos (Very Favorable, 70-30, maybe even more): Erm…this is a cake walk. Gobbos suck late game. Everyone knows that. This deck shuts down early game. Period. Just keep beating down, and they will eventually go down.
Sideboard: None needed. At all. Really.
----------
Tempered Steel (Favorable, 60-40): Whipflare is a dead card unless you use it to kill off your own guys, just at the end. Game 1 will be slightly in their favor as you will have 4 dead cards in your deck. After sideboard, this is REALLY easy due to your readiness for this. Just have Divine Offering and this is a cake walk. It sucks to draw Whipflare g1 against these guys, but you might not even draw it.
Sideboard: -4 Whipflare, -2 Myr Sire, +4 Divine Offering, +1 Goblin Arsonist, +1 Roc Egg.
----------
UW control (Coin Flip to Unloseable): This will be a harder match up than most. It really just depends. If they go the creatureless route, you literally cannot lose. It will be a lot harder
if they run Frost Titans. Kill it off as fast as you can. But, that's not your main problem. Your main problem is Gideon Jura. If they play him, you better have an O-Ring in your hand or draw it. Make sure to keep your O-Rings in your hand for him. I wish I had room to fit Gideon in THIS deck, but there's no room for him. In the sideboard he'd be fine, though, as extra win-con against control AND Gideon hate.
Sideboard: Everything you have to kill of their Frost Titan. Planeswalker hate, maybe Gideon himself. Also, an extra Wurmcoil Engine and Sun Titan helps.
----------
UB Control (Slightly Favorable to Unloseable): Again with the creatureless thing. You cannot lose. Grave Titan should not be a problem at all. Actually, it's amazing to play against as it means they don't have mana for counters and you have so many sweepers. Also with the Frost Titan.
Sideboard: Same as UW.
----------
Invisiblade (Very Favorable, 70-30): No. Just no. Hexproof is nothing. Nothing at all. This match-up is unbearably easy, one of the reasons I love this deck.
Sideboard: Your Divine Offerings. -2 Roc Egg, -2 Perilous Myr/Myr Sire, +4 Divine Offering.
----------
Discard (Slightly Favorable, 55-45): My view on this MU has changed drastically once I started. Now I am glad to say that if you play it right, this match will be yours. Just play it carefully. Below are my first thought, read if you like, because I'm leaving them there, but it's not as hard as I initially thought.
No one will be playing mono-black discard after IoK and friends rotate. If it's at your FNM, side in Mental Misstep and win. They can't control you the whole game since all their creatures should die. But this IS your worst MU, I just feel that no one will play it. Maybe 3 SB slots dedicated to it.
Sideboard: Just fit in Mental Misstep.
COMING IN UPDATE 11/16
TBA.
So I don't keep track of tourneys and everything, so if anything happens, please just PM me.
Overall, the deck is a blast to play, and a blast to play against (unless you're playing aggro). Our playing completely shuts down fast aggro (but I will miss Pyroclasm against Tempered Steel). I feel our sideboard should be more focused on control. Hope you have a lot of fun!

The second is guaranteed as a T1 deck that is really good, plus its' mana is better. I would choose #2. However, Eminem is correct, comes down to preference. Eminem was not correct, however, for tying Rihanna to the bed and setting the house on fire.
You mention Shattering Spree in your matchup part quite often for sideboarding. That card isn't in standard...you should find something else that does it's job pretty easily, although it won't do it that good...

The clearest possible solution I can see is swapping 2 Mountain and 1 Clifftop Retreat for 3 Rootbound Crag, then sideboard Ancient Grudge. I'm assuming the creatures are not to be touched so Manic Vandal is out (and it's a very situational reaction card, anyway). You could also have Divine Offering (which also can add a turn via life gain), but does not have the utility that Ancient Grudge would have because of flashback. Downside to the flashback is that G cost.

Ancient Grudge is really powerful, just don't want it clogging up my mana base or sideboard. Divine Reckoning is really interesting and it seems like a great thing for control.
More tips on the deck:
1. Gideon is SWEET, but unnecesary.
2. Better win-cons, in fact, the best win-cons, are Angelic Destiny and Elspeth Tirel. Both are super broken in this deck.

Gideons greatness in a deck like this is that you wipe the field then swing with a 6/6. In many of my match ups that I lost to caw blade, it was to a sworded up Gideon after he either a.) pulled all the creatures to attack him or b.) blew up the field then equipped and swung. I also suggest Solemn Simulacrum as it will help ramp then replaces it's self. If you dip into being a naya deck, Viridian emisary is pretty good here.

Well, from what I understand, the beginning meta will still have Birthing Pod, Tempered Steel, and Caw-Blade in the form of Invisiblade (which you tested against). RDW will be there as always, plus the green-white human aggro featured in dailyMTG yesterday. UB Skaab/Zombie, UW Spirit, RG Werewolf, RB Vampire along with humans round out the tribals. WUB Reanimator is thought to make a comeback. Flashback decks, morbid decks. As for new archetypes found, I guess we will have to wait and see, but from where I sit it looks like you have created a deck that can handle all of the above already.
Also, do you use MWS to test all of these, or another program, or make proxies if you don't have the cards? I don't have half of the deck's rares but want to play it badly to see if it's worth the investment.

how do you plan to even begin to handle solar flar decks lol... you pretty much scoop to fatty+unburial rights... plus anything running lilliana is going to shred your hand so you pretty much scoop to that too... so you automatically have 3 common almost auto losses(junk-pod/anything with lilliana/solar flare) in exchange for a good matchup against a tier 2 human aggro(WTF is this?) and tempered steel
i mean i guess it comes down to how competitive you actually want to be but i can guarantee you arent gonna be hangin with the "big boys" on this one

EDIT: Junk-Pod is most definetely not an auto-loss. Lilliana ----> O-Ring. Done. Scooping? Of course not. In fact, it fuels my Sun Titan. Lilliana, discard o-ring. Next turn, Titan, take back O-Ring, kill off Lilliana. And really? Lilliana is nothing just because her + ability is good. The Edict is super worthless, and her ultimate is literally nothing.

I like Sword of War and Peace more than Angelic Destiny. After they see the Destiny once, playing it is like begging to be 2-for-1'd, losing CA and tempo as well. I would even test other Swords here too.

Umm…
1. Angelic Destiny is by far our best win-con. Only ONCE have I lost after getting a Destiny out. That's right. Once. So, I'd really not recommend removing it. It's the flying that does it. Recursive evasion on top of a monster boost? Please. Dismember my Traveler? Good job. You just prevented 1 damage (unless you're playing black, in which you have better removal). So, I would hate to cut it. A 3-of is just perfect, I usually see one at some point in the game.
2. Others swords= meh. They're amazing, but not as useful as WaP here. It seems to me that WaP was practically built for this deck. Anyways, WaP will see some extensive testing from me, but the other swords just won't reach the same level as it or Destiny at all. Most definetely, in fact.

i´m really sorry for my ignorance but... what am i missing here? How does this deck play out?
It´s just playing little dudes that survive wrath effects... no swords?
Still don´t understand
Maybe I didn't explain well enough. First off, Swords are being debated (WaP). This is a control deck. The point is to hold your opponents off, constantly wiping the board, not letting them do anything, and abusing your win-cons. Constantly ping them so your win-con will have an easy time, not that it needs it here. Examples of abusing your win-cons are putting Angelic Destiny on a Doomed Traveler or having fatties that "survive" sweepers such as Wurmcoil Engine or Gideon Jura. The deck has been very consistent for me, and if you're interested, I hope this helps and you have a blast playing it.
Also, Elspeth is very abused here.

well, it is a very cheap deck to play with i guess... i could even try to foil it out =D.
I thought this deck was supposed to win with the 1/1 flier doomed traveler left behind, or the shock that perilous myr does when it dies... just seemed awkward if that´s waht the deck did.

A huge thanks to Argetlam and the guys at Hakai studios for this awesome banner
Have you thought about using Ghost Quarter at all? Against any deck that's running a lot of nonbasics it seems fine. Plus you can rebuy it with Sun Titan and eventually lock them out.

That WOULD be awkward
If you have say 2 WaP I would try to fit in those, as well as a singleton Gideon.
EDIT: Ghost Quarter has always been a favorite of mine, and I was overjoyed when they reprinted it. Now we only need my favorite card in all of MTG, Pyroclasm, reprinted, which I might add works beautifully with this deck. I never see Sun Titan in my MWS tests because the shuffler is so weird, but Ghost Quarter seems viable since it is not only land destruction but an amazing mana fixer.

And yes I use MWS.
Nihil Spellbomb is a nice answer to the Solar Flare decks; I also think Surgical Extraction is another good s/b card. I've been running Mental Misstep to combat those cards, as well as those pesky Stromkirk Nobles. Your deck looks very refreshing and off-the-beaten-path, I like it.
I also play on MWS a lot and would love to do some testing against you with my Esper Solar Flare deck to see how they match up against one another. Lemme know if you're interested

I am interested, I haven't got enough testing against them.
Also, I will try 2 extraction in my SB if needed, but 6 slots seems a lot (so I need to see how it plays against flare decks). I have no experience with flare so I don't know how many slots it needs.

First off, I wanna say that the artwork is AWESOME. It is amazing.
I like how this developed. WaP definitely seems like a great addition as a 2-3 of. It's also a great investment.
Played a few matches (I did include WaP and Gideon) and it seems a lot more powerful than before. I actually got a T5 win twice, which impressive since I only played 5 games.
The cards seems good to me. Good enough to split with Whipflare? Who knows? I haven't used it at all and just found out about it. What we really need is instant-speed removal, but this seems decent enough. Input?

I built this after reading the thread, gonna take it to an FNM or two. While getting pieces I came across Rolling Temblor and was going to post on it, but I'm too slow, eh? Anyway, Temblor is advantageous vs tempered steel aside from Vault Skirge, but costs an extra mana. Also kills Perilous Myr, which may be handy sometimes. The Flashback is the focus, but a lot of the threats we'll be seeing by the time we can cast 6 are out of range or fly. I guess I'm unconvinced.
I'm finding it difficult to stick Angelic Rebirth after the first match. There's lots of kill in response to cast after they see it. Suppose that's where Gideon Jura gets sided in? Won't help if that removal is Go for the Throat though.
Decided on Surgical Extraction sided for Solar Flare. Purify the Grave gets used twice, but Surgical is preemptive. Maybe both, depending.
I do support Ancient Grudge for Tempered Steel or x Blade decks. A few Rootbound Crag in the place of Mountains hasn't hurt me.

I've had a lot of luck with Destiny, actually. It's been my main win-con (though Elspeth shines quite brightly as well). If you're taking it to FNM, you should throw in a Gideon and 1-2 WaP if you have them. I've been having a great deal of success with them.
Anyways, great!
EDIT: I'm actually running 4 Nihil Spellbomb and 2 Surgical Extraction in the SB for Flare. It's been working quite well.

Also, do you use MWS to test all of these, or another program, or make proxies if you don't have the cards? I don't have half of the deck's rares but want to play it badly to see if it's worth the investment.

i mean i guess it comes down to how competitive you actually want to be but i can guarantee you arent gonna be hangin with the "big boys" on this one
Well. Nihil Spellbomb. No more Flare.
And yes I use MWS.

Sword of War and Peace
Amazing card. Aknowledged as one. But is the sky the limit with it here?
Pros:
-Pro Slagstorm and Whipflare
-Would this protect it from DoJ
-Clock and Win-Con
-Life gain for survival vs. aggro
Cons:
-Needs slots
Seems good enough to me. Also, I am currently testing a maindecked Gideon, and it's been working pretty well. Deck slots are an issue, though.

Umm…

It´s just playing little dudes that survive wrath effects... no swords?
Still don´t understand
A huge thanks to Argetlam and the guys at Hakai studios for this awesome banner

I thought this deck was supposed to win with the 1/1 flier doomed traveler left behind, or the shock that perilous myr does when it dies... just seemed awkward if that´s waht the deck did.
A huge thanks to Argetlam and the guys at Hakai studios for this awesome banner
That WOULD be awkward
If you have say 2 WaP I would try to fit in those, as well as a singleton Gideon.
EDIT: Ghost Quarter has always been a favorite of mine, and I was overjoyed when they reprinted it. Now we only need my favorite card in all of MTG, Pyroclasm, reprinted, which I might add works beautifully with this deck. I never see Sun Titan in my MWS tests because the shuffler is so weird, but Ghost Quarter seems viable since it is not only land destruction but an amazing mana fixer.

I like how this developed. WaP definitely seems like a great addition as a 2-3 of. It's also a great investment.
Played a few matches (I did include WaP and Gideon) and it seems a lot more powerful than before. I actually got a T5 win twice, which impressive since I only played 5 games.
Rolling Temblor
The cards seems good to me. Good enough to split with Whipflare? Who knows? I haven't used it at all and just found out about it. What we really need is instant-speed removal, but this seems decent enough. Input?

I've had good results so far with a single Phyrexian Rebirth.
