i like Wakedancer with Mortarpod since it gets her activation on turn 3. ofcourse it still leaves the deck vulnerable to stalling out.
I really think it needs bigger threats like Obliterator or burn spells to push through the last pieces of damage.
Bumpback may not be "zombie" in art but its a nice Lava Spike if you arent worried about combat and flashes back later to win the game.
The synergy with it and Messanger is amazing, throw in a spellskite and whom ever is on the otherside needs a sweeper or some serious removal get make sure that Messanger stays in the GY. Throw in a Pox or two and get more dmg via CIP effect.
Is it too cute? Any room in a Zombie deck for just Hex Parasite? If there is, is the 'combo' just in the end, not worth the effort.
Further, a Hex Parasite, Messanger, Spellskite would just push a control list so that wouldn't have a bearing here.
@SheerMadness - Your list looks good, and would definitely be the route I would go if I was running a UB list. Try out Phantasmal Images, as they are pretty sweet in the UB lists. Copying Messenger is the goal, but having additional outs to Thrun and Geist is just a bonus.
Wasn't sure if this was worth starting a new thread so I'm going to place my deck here.
I really want to make a Zombie weenie deck. Right now my deck is at a point where it is able to get close to victory in every game but it just runs out of gas mid game. Most of the games I play I can get my opponent to between 8 and 12 life in the first few turns without taking much damage myself, but then things just go pear shaped and I lose with my opponents still between 5 and 10 life. I doubt that by sticking to a "weenie" theme the deck will be competitive at all but I want to see where it can go.
The core of the deck is as follows:
4x Gravecrawler
4x Diregraf Ghoul 4x Geralf's Messenger
Messenger is arguably the best creature we can run, and if you aren't running 4, you seriously need to reconsider what your deck is trying to accomplish.
Also, 22 lands is not enough for a deck running 3x 5 cmc creatures, let alone 5 more 5 drops in the board, and 4, 6 cmc creatures in the board. If you run 5 drops, you need a minimum of 23 lands. If you run 6 drops, you need a minimum of 24 lands. With what you have between main and sideboard, I'd suggest running 26 or 27 lands.
A key thing that a lot of people look over when building sideboards is their cards' CMC. Sideboards should not be filled with overcosted threats, but instead filled with efficiently costed answers. If you look at my previously posted lists, you will see that my CMC cost stays incredibly low, and I have 0 cards that go above 3 mana (the same as my mainboard). A great example of this is to look at the Grixis list that Brian Kibler was testing against Gerry Thompson.
Only one card at 3 mana as the highest CMC card, and he even has an extra land in there for the control matchups. Watch your sideboard's overall CMC, and your record post board will thank you.
intereresting.. a UB Delver style zombie deck haha (your not actually using a real delver right? just the delver style deck?) . if you have more successful results with it i will definitely try it myself. like archie said, when i was thinking of UB, i didnt think of a deck like this. i was thinking of the havengul lich and/ or grimgrin corpseborn combo decks. maybe your approach is loads better.
@Archie
tnx for the list. its nice that your running a single Grim lavamancer. its like a painful sleeper in this deck since there is a high chance that will be ignored in trying to eliminate the zombies. it could still make use of spent removal cards.
haha one guy is going ub while the other is RB. good thing i will be trying Chapins Mono black list first. maybe that guy is seeing something in mono black that can be essential in todays standard format. if im dont get much success using it. then i will try out both your builds. just to save money, i will be buying evolving wilds instead so i wont spend much on dual lands
Also has anyone considered Mono Black instead of Blue Black, run Lashwrithes and Cemetery Reaper?
Where are the 2 drops for this deck? Black Cat seems to the only one and that's really lame and unfitting for the deck. Amazing 1 drops and incredible 3 drops as far as the eye can see but there's no 2 drops for this deck? That kind of hurts.

Cemetary Reaper is bad.
The mono deck ive been running goes something like this...
Then there are fringe playables like... Child of Night and Mortarpod(in this deck anyway... in u/b mortarpod may be a staple, for triggering undying/morbid/lifeloss off captain)
Then youre pretty much dipping into unplayable territory.

I'm running mono black for budget reasons, and I'm looking to artifacts (Perilous Myr, Mortarpod) for my 2-drops. Though, part of me likes that cat's discard ability. Other than that, yeah, Lashwrithes are probably going to be my 4-drop.
Is anyone considering shenanigans with Undying Evil? Seems like it could be a pretty good card for 1 mana if played at the right time, though with Gravecrawler and Geralf's Messenger, it would be largely redundant in a mono black build.
Schulz, I'd simply recommend running Vault Skirge and letting your turn 2 be 2 of your 12 1 drops or mana up for a kill spell.
Amusingly, I almost think there could be Black Deck Wins at this point, with Gravecrawler, Vault Skirge, Tormented Soul, and Diregraf Ghoul serving as sword carriers, Mimic Vats and Messengers. Just nom **** up. I might sleeve it up some day for the lulz
It could almost work...
Edit: Oh, also, even if you're mono B, you could use Shrine of Burning Rage for inevitability. It still adds a clock that's not easy to interact with if you aren't in Gruul
Is there any reason not to put one or two copies of Mikaeus the Unhallowed into the Mono-Black version?
@ Archie:
Thanks for the feedback on my list, adding the other two messenger's really helped the deck a push over the mid game hump. As to my sideboard, it was a slap dash assembly of cards that complimented my deck rather than ones that strengthened it, when it comes time to physically get all the cards it will be remade to be usable rather than flashy.
On your advice I added an extra Swamp and dropped a Grimgrin from the deck and so far it seems to have been having return.
Now, as a general question to everyone, what are your feelings on Ghoulcaller's Chant in any zombie based deck? Is it worth keeping or is it a spot better filled by cards like Undying Evil, Tragic Slip or even maybe Deadly Allure?

I love Chant in my UB deck mostly because it's a self-mill build and is also all zombies so I always have at least 2 zombies in my yard. 2-for-1 card advantage for B is amazing
He isn't anything special, but he's going into any mono-black zombie list. And the fact he can hit creatures in opponents graveyard is very relevant, shuts off Moorland Haunt, etc.
Posted a deck about a week ago, I still think it's pretty effective.
Obviously it's probably not the most fine-tuned list, but I feel like most Mono-Black lists will end up looking somewhat like this. I really want to put Smallpox into this deck, it seems like it might be ok, but who knows. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I initially wanted to play Mono Black, I thought Lashwrithe would be a sick card but with the format SWARMING with Token decks and Zombies have basically no evasion the Lashwrithe isn't very good. With Lashwrithe not being the powerhouse it would seem to be I believe Blue Black is the strongest option for Zombies.
Vapor Snag is great for the deck, it makes Mirran Crusader much less of a problem which is always a swell thing, not to mention it's very solid all on it's own, there's a lot of great creatures to bounce in this format.
The only real questions I have with the deck are.
What's the best card against tokens? Ratchet Bomb and Black Sun's Zenith aren't bad but the main problem is that it hurts us badly too and with tokens running Planeswalkers and easily generating quantities of creatures I'm not so sure Black Sun's Zenith is the right choice. Then the Ratchet Bomb actually seems rather weak against Green White and Blue White aggro decks, where it's extremely strong in the creature light Green White lists and mainly just the Black White token decks.
Then there's Curse of Death's Hold which in my opinion is the best card for the job I've thought of so far, but it comes down very slow only as soon as turn 5 and if they have a card like Gavony Township Honor of The Pure or Intangible Virtue
The 5 mana investment seems sort of weak. I'm almost thinking our best plan is to simply battle and be faster and pressure harder.
Second Question.
What is our best option against Mono Red? At best this seems like a toss up matchup that can go either way easily. Is there anything I'm missing for the sideboard that would be very strong against Mono Red?
Hmm, wonder how good Mimic Vat would be in this deck. Potential up-side
1)Skinrender becomes removal on a stick
2)Any Zombie enables all Gravecrawlers in the yard
3)Geralf's Messenger becomes an even BIGGER headache
4)Never bad having a Phyrexian Obliterator on the Vat.

Mimic Vat, It's very strong against control based decks, or anything that relies on sweepers to defeat us. I think it belongs in the sideboard, it is a strong sideboard card at that.
How does everyone feel about maybe 1-2 Surgical Extractions maybe MB? You kill a delver/snaps/whatever you can target it right off and make it a null factor for the rest of the game perhaps.
EDIT: Also, what would be good to get rid of artifacts like the cage or something? Realized this while walking around work my mind was blank on this point.

most of the time it's going to be a terrible topdeck and a dead card in your starting hand. I just don't like it in any way other than as a last resort sideboard card against certain decks

What about a simple zombie/pox list? Yeah, we don't get to play with all of our new toys, but I think we may just have to manage if we want the curve and consistency we need. Also, black cat is awesome. Try it out.
These are all great ideas, and I think the Mono-B Zombie Pox could be a real deck given the right kind of circumstances (seems really really bad against tokens and W/U Humans).
The main problem I have with UB Delver-Zombie is that it seems to be no more powerful than Illusions and yet attacks on the same axis. Also the above list seems to be way short on removal and Vapor Snags.
The mana is probably completely wrong, and this is just a quick sketch with no testing, but Stormblood Berserker sure fills that weak 2-drop slot nicely and Brimstone Volley seems like a powerhouse in this deck.
It's possible Mortarpod is just ridiculous in this deck, but I opted for a little more explosiveness with Fling. It's really too bad we are forced to go with Aristocrat instead of Hellrider, but that's the price we pay for playing the excellent Geralf's Messenger.

The Spellskite ive been trying different things.
Cards ive been giving heavy considerations for MD...
Sword of War and Peace
Phyrexian Metamorph
Fume Spitter
Vampire Outcasts (ewww... i kno rite!)
Sylvok Lifestaff
Despise
Mortarpod

Yes the 2 drop slot is real bad.
Vault Skirge is the best 2 drop available.
High Born Ghoul and Black Cat are there.
Spellskite is actually fairing decently in testing.

4 Darkslick Shores
4 Drowned Catacomb
