I just hope they drop the power level down gradually, until we see something more along the lines of Rav-TSP... Luckily SoM seems to be on that track so far, even if M11 introduced Titans :/.
I think the mistake was having them overpowered. Primeval could have made 1 land, grave 1 zombie, and the other 3 are fine i guess.
or they could have only gotten abilities when attacking, though that would have made them crap.
Really the mistake was making Grave Titan splashable into blue and Primeval Titan splashable at all. That aside, if neither of those things had happened I have the strong feeling we'd be looking at a meta in which Frost Titan and Sun Titan interacted with blue dominance heavily, albeit not at the same level that Grave Titan interacts with blue and that Primeval Titan interacts with the meta in general.
Blue is deep evil for MTG and always has been. Creatures that are not blue that bring that basic fact to light are always a mistake.

Scars printed Wurmcoil Engine and introduced a mechanic which doesn't allow the opponent to interact with it and has been nearly universal on lists of "top 5 worst mechanics of all time" (poison); i wouldn't put any money on scars changing anything.
the most annoying cards to me are baneslayer, grave titan, and primeval. primeval wins: if not countered, expect taking 2/3 bolts per turn, or somestimes just die if there is an khalni hearth expedition in play. grave titan, also, is just too powerful in any deck. when i first saw the titans, i didnt think of abusing primeval, i seemes ok to me. grave titan, however, any idiot with ice cream on his forehead would recognize power creep. the same for avenger of zendikar, it was absurd since the first time i saw it.
baneslayer, however, is the most ridiculous creation. it is easy to respond, so top decks have little place to it and is an auto win against most decks when unimpeded. it creates 2 possible situations:
1) I play BSA, you don't kill it and you are frustrated as I beat 10 each turn with flying.
2) I play BSA an get frustrated because you condemned / doom bladed / journey to nowhered it.
the other titans are all ok to me, i love to play them and i'm able to fight them when they are not on my side. the eldrazi titans are ok too, and i'm ok with people tryng to summoning trap an emrakul, i think the power of the deck actually comes from being able to primeval titan AND the trap.
that is it. also, as a note: some people mentioned the power of planeswalkers. i think they all should be made like venser, which is conditionally freaking good (ajani goldmane fits too) or like the 5 first, that didn't power creep but were all ok (sorin fits too)

Infect is not Poison. Infect is better than Poison ever was. Mechanics-wise, I would say that Scars of Mirrodin is actually the best since... well, M11's Scry. And Worldwake's Kicker. And Zendikar's Landfall.
... come to think of it, Wizards is just really good nowadays of creating simple, fun, and clever rules mechanics.

Wurmcoil is still weaker than the Titans as it can be bounced easily or chumped... Although it is still a bit too strong.
Infect is trash, check out my Blog post, I even state there isn't a mechanic comparable to it because of how terrible it is for the game as a whole :/.
Poison is a creature mechanic. What's non-interactive aout creatures?
The fact that it makes two life totals in the game, meaning you can only pretty much play infect with infect and playing it in normal decks really isn't an option.
If it wasn't for the fact that the poison bit was subsidised by Wither, Infect would have been complete garbage and then some. As it is now, it's just Wither made more restrictive than it has to be.
I admit, that I used to want big creatures that were capable of being played and winning but ramp and counter heavy decks can be piloted by any freak on the street. If stalling the game just to play something like jace or grave is prime rib in a format where there isn't enough good sirloin makes me want to hit up a vegan buffet.
Personally, I really like combo but creature interaction is where most skill is involved, and it would be nice to have another standard where aggro isn't key and waiting around until you can cast godzilla's brother is prominent. I mid-range meta where 3 cc and 4 cc cards with a lot of interaction and abilities would be fun where games last long and we have aggro hosers and big creature penalties would be nice; preferably in a Arabian nights fashion with cool stuff... Oh, and a nice slice of pumpkin pie on the side while I play my super camels...
Seriously though, I enjoy the intent that the OP has and i am probably a little wrong in my accuracies about metas but I would like to see a block where people actualyl WANT to play block without shards thoctars and mll ramp (there probably is and dont want to hear it) and I want it to be highly pushedby wizards for it to be played block.
WotC is not going to print "I win when I am cast" creatures in large quantities. The Titans aren't even that difficult to deal with if you know what you're doing. WotC tends to print 1 or 2 stupid fatties per block (in Zen block it was Emrakul, Ulamog, and Iona), and a lot more smaller creatures, because they know curving out is more powerful (and more fun) than ramping up to a fatty.

Exactly, infect is bad right now and it weakens the cool wither approach they could have used (not sure why they didn't just make wither, since it was popular and way more interesting). It's bad at the moment because we've had one set and because it's such a polarizing ability as you noted. It's the worst mechanic to be printed in years, and yeah i remember cascade and radiance.
Cascade is actually not that bad, Blood Braid Elf and the cards it shared a colour with was the problem. Oh, and I guess the free spells that had a suspend cost only in Time Spiral, but that's not Standard. You didn't see people crying over Ardent Plea, even when it was played in that "Spread 'Em" deck.
I forgot Radiance existed, though most of the Radiance cards weren't too restricting and you could still play them as if they were single target only. Like Leave No Trace could still be a Dimistify when you needed it to be... But Infect can't deal regular damage when you wish it did.

well yeah any mechanic can be kept weak, but it was wishful thinking to hope that wizards wouldn't print one card with cascade and have it be a huge mistake. the effect is far too powerful to be on anything decent and they dun goofed with BBE and to a lesser extent bit blast.
Would Infect be overpowered if the poison damage to a player was optional?
No, it would just be Wither then that people used as Poison if they had some sort of brain damage... Or they were playing in limited because Poison in limited can sometimes get there.
The major difference would be that Phyrexian Crusader would see play in all sorts of decks, and Skith might see some actual Standard play. Otherwise Infect would still be sub-par, unless Wizards (Well MaRo) wanted to push it so much that it ended up being the next R-Affinity. As in Affinity alone is ok, Affinity + Artifact lands is iffy, and Affinity + Artifact lands + Ravager + Disciple + Shrapnel Blast is wtf were they thinking?
Well, I am getting it, is that, if you are giving the choice to deal damage as poison or regular, these infect creatures could be used in more than poison decks and wouldn't be so limiting. but at the same time, a dedicated poison deck would always choose to deal the damage to the opponent as poison, and still the damage done as whither to their creatures.
The old Poison Mechanic did both a poison counter and regular damage... And guess what, aside from Swamp Mosquito no one ever won the game with Poison unless it was some kind of super casual kitchen table group. Now they made it so creatures deal only poison damage and not regular damage, but because that would be painfully underpowered alone, they had to subsidise the poison bit with an already good mechanic known as Wither so that it would be the least bit playable.
The titans aren't large quantities? Almost every Eldrazi sees at least some play isn't large quantities? I mean, come on, look at legions...Akroma practically stood alone in that set as the single most stupidly powerful card in there, and she still had a prohibitive casting cost. 6 for a non-legendary 6/6 with relevant cip AND attack triggers would have been dumb in just white or red. Black, green, and blue, though, too? That completely ignores almost every r&d rule about creature design.
Besides, having one or two of these creatures around in a format is fine, even something as tricky to get rid of as Wurmcoil Engine. But to have at least 6 of those stupidly powerful cards combined with 3-4 stupidly powerful planeswalkers, and how do you expect them NOT to end up in the lists of every single top-tier deck? That's why I left standard, these creatures and walkers are quickly outmoding the number of answers to them. You're not getting a Lux Cannon to answer multiple walkers on the board, you're not resetting the board position Grave Titan creates unless you're in white (provided you don't get countered trying), and Tectonic Edge does not stop the two-pronged assault from Valakut and a 6/6 spitting lands all over the place. Truthfully, magic has started to look like a 12 year old's card creators forum run amok, and it's really degenerate.
The main difference between Wurmcoil and a Titan is that Wurmcoil is just an undercosted big dude with an ability that makes it a little harder to remove, whereas a Titan is an undercosted creature that has a powerful spell stapled onto it whenever it enters play or attacks...
Condemn, Mystifying Maze, Into the Roil, and so forth all deal with Wurmcoil far better than they deal with Titan... Even Journey, Revoke Existence, and other removal that doesn't use the graveyard answers Wurmcoil with no benefit to the owner.
Like at 5 mana and colourless, Mystifying Maze shuts down Wurmcoil for most decks, it's not an option for Titans, and aggro that has red can basically Vandal it leaving a 2 3/3s, which isn't an option with Titans.
That completely ignores almost every r&d rule about creature design.

The titans aren't large quantities? Almost every Eldrazi sees at least some play isn't large quantities?
Reading posts is tech. I didn't say they didn't print a lot of them, or that they don't see play. I simply said that there aren't many individual such cards. In Legions there was Akroma, Scourge brought Sliver Overlord, not to mention Onslaught already had Krosan Cloudscraper. That's not even including Mirrodin block or Odyssey block (I missed Odyssey block so I don't have an instant reference.

You're comparing a 5 colour Sliver, and a 9-10 mana (double to tripple green) 13/13 vanilla upkeep guy, and a triple green 6 mana 8/4 trampler with regen to a 6 mana 6/6 guy who vomits 2/2s and has death touch or a 6/6 trampler who fetches any 2 lands into play over and over?
Thank God that mistakes like Titans for Standard rotate and won't affect Legacy, and they did at least experiment with fatties in it. Mythic is a poor excuse, so should we just slap on that point every time we want to justify a break in the color pie? That is to assume that the color pie was jeopardized when they made the TItans.

What are the most powerful cards in standard? Titans, JTMS.
Titans serve a universal function, if you're playing black there's pretty much no reason not to run grave titan if you have that much mana. There's no way you can play blue without JTMS. This is the definition of a utility card.
You want to play blue? Get yourself 4 JTMS. Titans are pretty much a necessity for anyone who wants to play seriously as they're seen in practically every non-aggro tier 1 deck.
Congratulations. I've been saying this on these forums for some time now. And you know? Nobody cares. Everyone is just content with plunking down cards mindlessly. Nothing you do or say will change it. There has been a huge shift in the way Magic has been designed in the last two years, and if you don't like it, just don't give WotC your money. I'm not.
