UW Control is one of the few decks that straight up beat RDW. The problem is that there are many decks that beat UW Control and it took a huge hit in losing O-Ring (toughest loss) and Path to Exile.
I think UW control is less good vs mono red than pre rotation. The 2 UW top 8 lists in montreal provincials don't run celestial purges anymore (the ultimate koth killer) and one of them runs firewalker. It's true that without jund around, packing lot of purges suck, which were the bane of mono red and vamp. I think most sb will be tuned to fight ramp, so RDW might have room to shine again.
This card will be the worst rare in RTR and less remembered than skaab ruibator in three months. It struggles to be on the same power level as mass of ghouls, even in limited.
That its not simply "not good enough for competitive", or underpowered. But that this is offensively bad, the real stinker tier.
Still, my best evaluation is that its approximately on the same power level as a 4/4 for 4 vanilla beater.
True hehe. When I got home, I replayed the scenario on MWS and you still could've won even if I attacked Koth. But... the game-winning play would've been harder to find imo. So, still a misplay for me.
Elves is far, far better than you seem to be giving it credit for here. I saw Elves recover from a pyroclasm or DoJ repeatedly today. Maybe the one you're talking about was just a bad list?
Elves is definitely a Tier 1 deck right now, IMO. Certainly, it's the best aggro option available.
Oh yeah, you're right. My sideboard wasn't set up for it. Great oversight. Pyroclasm wasn't in the meta for me, and neither did I get DoJ, lol. BUT I did face a merfolk deck. Elves definitely survives a game with 3 Ratchet Bombs.
The elves I were running were a different iteration than won second place.
Joraga Warcaller and Fauna Shaman were nice, I just took out the Leatherback Baloth. I ran... 3 Monuments (funny thing is I didn't have a problem getting those out, it was just that I had no board position to benefit from it)
I had a two-of Contagion Engine and that actually wrecked a vengevine deck, taking out the doppelgangers and such.
The NC finals were UGr Dforce(with Frost&Primeval titan) and a BR midrangey kind of deck.. Just had a bunch of burn with koth, wurmcoil, abyssal persecutor and pyroclasm MD. Dforce got there for the win without a sweat. That deck just had so many answers and ways to lock him out of the game it was rediculous. Looked really fun to play
I played Elves to a miserable 3-5 finish. I was running on 2 hours of sleep followed by a 3 hour drive out there and I think I definitely could have done better.
I also think I played a sub-optimal list because I was too focused on having "catch all cards" against possible rogue decks I predicted I would see, and tuning the MD to have an explosive game 1 which led to a much weaker g2-3. Bad deckbuilding on my part.
My matchups were:
R1-Loss 1-2 U/W control. This was one of my friends from my shop. G1 I get the nuts hand with a t4 kill on the play. G2 I keep a slow hand and he gets me with a DoJ that I just couldn't play around because he had 2x WoO's out but I didn't have an ezuri. G3 I misplay hardcore. It was t4, I have an ezuri and an archdruid in my hand with 3 lands and a 4 elves on the field and he was tapped out. I figued if he didn't have it(I knew he was only running 3 total DoJ in his 75 so I had a chance) I could drop the archdruid now and ezuri next turn and double overrun for the win next turn. He had it and I lost.
R2-Win 2-0 Mono-Green Eldrazi. G1 I get a turn 4 kill and he hasn't played anything relevant. G2 I side in Preservers and he doesn't have an answer to him outside of Ulamog so I get there.
R3-Win 2-1 U/G/B Dredge-a-vine with Skinrenders to fauna for. G1 hes busy fauna-ing for vengevines but doesn't actually get any in play before I overrun him with Ezuri and Garruk. G2 he gets an explosive start with t1 birds, t2 cobra>fetchland>fauna shaman. and its all downhill from there. G3 I win with a double overrun out of nowhere as I'm able to cast ezuri/overrun with archdruid and untap him mid combat with a copperhorn scout to do it again.
R4-Loss 1-2 Valakut. G1 I have a great hand with a t4-5 kill, but my t2 arch druid gets bolted. I draw another on t4 and he doesn't have another bolt and I win on t5. G2 and 3 pyroclasm wrecks me with a bolt on ezuri followed by a pyroclasm the next turn and he just gets there like valakut does.
R5- Loss 1-2 URb pyromancer(with consuming vapors in the main and sadsac in the board). This was another friend from my shop, I basically can't win this matchup because of the ~18 removal spells he runs+more in the board. G1 I get the nuts but I still have to fight to get there. Post board hes got ~22 removal spells/burn in the deck and I can't ever keep a creature on the board between staggershock/vapors rebound and 'clasm. g2-3 I just die.
Was really thinking about dropping here but as its been roughly 6 years since I've been able to go to a "real event" I just wanted to have a good time and play people that I haven't had the opportunity to play back home so I decide against dropping and just finish playing the 8 rounds.
R6- Loss 0-2 RDW G1 he keeps my board clear and gets there. G2 I make the biggest, most embarrassing play mistake of my life and I lose.
R7- Win 2-0 U/W Allies. After an established board my guys are just better and I get an easy 2-0. She gets mana screwed g1.
R8- Loss 1-2 Valakut. G1 I go off with 2x copperhorn scouts and some elves being able to get in early damage and still play all my stuff. G2 and 3 Wurmcoil and pyroclasm take me out of the game.
In short. Wurmcoil Engine is stupidly good, any deck with primeval titan is basically the best deck you can play, Elves just seems to lose to decks that run red, and Black was the most underplayed color at the tournament. There were 2 vampire decks that were at the top tables all day. One of them was in the top8 at X-0 but lost in the QF. Just looked like...normal zendikar vampires...with captivating vampires, consuming vapors and a singleton masticore... I didn't even see mind sludge. Idk how they went X-0 but sometimes you get there.
They can work...one of my friends won Idaho States with the deck.
WW Quest works if you are facing decks without artifact AND enchantment hate. If you ARE.... well, Quest won't get 5 counters, and Argentum Armor / SoBaM will get destroyed. Essentially, if you don't win in 3/4 turns, good luck winning.

Not sure if Maryland has been posted yet, but it was ~120ish folks - 7 rounds. I went 3-2-2 (yay control mirrors!). Lots of ramp, lots of UW, lots of aggro, and a fair bit of jank.
Top 8 was mostly ramp (Titan and Eldrazi) and one or two UW decks. Maybe a WW aggro deck as well and a singleton RDW (maindecking Act of Treason that just wrecked all the ramp decks post eldrazi drops).
I ran UW and saw it 3 times. I started 0-2 so most of what I saw was janky. Didn't see a single ramp deck all day despite teching specifically for it - but thats what happens when you lose your first two :\

I would not count on Celestial Purges staying out of UW boards for long, they are good against RDW and Valakut Titan Ramp, two key match ups that the board needs to handle. Leyline of Sanctity and Celestial Purge are both already (still) in my sideboard.

MO states I saw plenty of Primevil Titan. I played Uw and handeled anything with Valakut well and lost to the ones running Eldrazi. I also saw a good bit of poison. I went 5-2-1 for the weekend, losing only to Eldrazi ramp decks. It was a good time.

Back at the bar, when you thought we were getting all palsy-walsy, I was actually flipping through that sorry mind you call an organizer looking for dirt! You know what we call THAT? MIND-TAKING, BABY! ACCEPT NO SUBSTITUTES!
The deck is just silly; I sleeved it up the night before and did not so much as goldfish a hand before the tournament. Yeah, I'm superstitious. Losing round 1 is also a tradition for me. A few thoughts:
-Leatherback Baloth is infinitely more of a problem than Kor Firewalker.
-Koth is, in fact, that good.
-Get your Masticores while they're "cheap." Seriously.
I went 5-2 for the NV states and placed 12th with Monowhite control. Couldve been better but my first loss was to turn 3 Primeval Titan and mana screw. Second loss was to mana screw. I probably would've lost to the first deck regardless but the second deck I could've beaten handily if not for the mana screw.
Based on all the matches I played, Mimic Vat is the real deal. That card is sick and was definitely my MVP for the day along with Student Of Warfare.
Mono Red wins it all.
2x Eldrazi Green
3x Titan V Ramp 1 w/ splash of blue (think w/ 1 island in board)
Lux Cannon deck. I have no idea what it ran.

It was ridiculous.
I'm not sure who won, I dropped at 3-4 after starting 2-0 then going to 3-2.
About half the field was Valakut (including me). Lots of elf decks and eldrazi ramp too. I saw barely any RDW and not many U/W.
I should have played U/G/W Shaman/Vengevine/Venser aggro with Eldrazi Monuments like I wanted to.

I have no clue on either; I heard it second-hand from a mutual friend, who was called by the guy who won.

Nope, had to be less than 128 players because of 7 rounds. See this link: http://www.classicdojo.org/mischtml/swissnum.html
If I recall correctly, it was 107 or 109 players.
For Brad's Twitter: Lol because his brother has now won States 3 times.
