the land count is pretty critical. it is vital to hit your land drops to be able to keep mana open for counters. also with treasure hunt it is easy to setup huge draws with all the land.

Have a helicopter drop you off out front. Light your cigar with a small Indonesian boy holding a black lotus. Then bust out a craw wurm deck with no sleeves. Raw dog shuffle, loose terribly, flip the table, leave in a hovercraft.
A Control deck with less than 26 lands is like a lap dance where the stripper isn't crying-- you're doing it wrong.
LOL.. i agree here actually, 26 is right, and like the guy above said edge isnt really used as a land, its a spell (then again chalice is similar but opposite)

lol, iRebel, you are my conscience, my moral compass; the angel on my shoulder.
Control decks live or die on their ability to make their land drops. I can't imagine any single spell that is worth the possibility of not being able to drop a land T4.

Seriously though, 26 lands has been tested to be the best.
It will entirely depend on your curve. Chapin / nassif were playing 2 coup 2 springs 4 jaces and an iona. You DO NOT want to miss a land drop.
30 mana sources may sound a bit compulsive but most of his mana base has other uses than just producing mana. Like making your opponents cry about them not having the color they need for instance. Or blatantly cheating by peering at the top3 of your deck.
Fake edit: Speaking of which... Why the hell is there a freaking Plains in the side? Is it to swap it out with Tedge vs. mono colored decks? Seems like a slot that could of been of better use to me...
I run 24... It works because I am a huge land ramper. 4x Harrows and 3x Khalni Heart Expedition help the deck run smooth as a baby's bottom.
Sadly, those of us running UW and UWr don't have access to such spells.

The deck has problems hitting WW for a turn 2 Firewalker and the RDW matchup is bad.
A Control deck with less than 26 lands is like a lap dance where the stripper isn't crying-- you're doing it wrong.
Yes, you are. Offensive posts = bad.
Well, my UWr ran smoother with 26 Lands, however UW this is slightly different, has free ponders.... but 26 is ok. We do run fetches. Has control always run 26 as of the last few Standards? I've only been in since Shards.
Anyways, I find your quote to be insightful and hilarious, except for the offensive red-lettering.

Yeah, but iRebel is right. I can certainly see how it might offend the Magic-playing stripper portion of the forum community.
Control decks have traditionally run that many, yes, or even more. Angelfire back in Ravnica ran 24-25 and 6 (!) signets.

Seems like a pretty bad plan to me... I'd much, much rather jsut get a 4th firewalker instead. The deck has 14 white sources. I dont see why having double white would be a problem...

I've been having problems getting WW on turn 2, and I've upped it to 15 white sources...

Chapin's commentary on the singleton Plains in the sideboard:
The sideboard is not too surprising, though some of the applications may not be immediately obvious. The basic Plains is the big one that gets a strange glance. The main deck is just a hair short of the amount of White mana that it wants and the sideboard Firewalkers and Baneslayers (as well as Elspeth and Perimeter Captain) want even more. We debated for a long time putting the fourth Edge in the board and the Plains in the main deck, but we realized that we wanted the Edge against more people than the Plains, so we discussed the crazy possibility that we might just board basic Plains.
The Edges are pretty lame against decks like Boros, Mono-R, White Weenie, and Vampires. They are so lame, in fact, we generally just board 1 Edge out for a spell, since we aren’t using them as Wastelands in these match-ups. With the addition of a basic Plains, we could now board out two Edges and board in a Plains, making our manabase that much more stable. In addition, in some control match-ups, you just want as much mana as possible, and it is nice to be able to go up to 31.
do you want to play a land every turn? 26 lands is the sweet spot for a control deck. You have the lowest ratio of two lands hands without having an ungodly ratio of 4+m landers. I didn't do the math, but I trusted to source, I just don't have a link as it was done 1900 style with pen and paper by a friend who is adept at math, and algorithms and things I cannot even spell. 27 lands in a 61 card deck is generally accepted too, but that's a pro thing that would matter so little that we should ignore it.

In life all we can do is try to make things better. Sitting lost in old ways and fearing change only makes us outdated and ignorant.
Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.

Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.
26 lands is an absolute must. UWr needs the color fixing and typically doesn't run Everflowing Chalice, making it essential to hit your land drops. UW also needs to hit every land drop being that it runs more biggame-breakingspells. Also with 4 Tectonic Edges you may get stuck with too much colorless early game.
Are 26 Lands really neccassary?
Hitting land every turn is important and it makes Treasure Hunt more reliable. I think 26 lands is extremely important.
Also remember, Tectonic Edge is more of a spell then a land.
Yes, you are. Offensive posts = bad.
