Also, random question, but heres an example of a play I was wondering about. If I have a CotW and a Preeminent Captain in my hand, and another Preeminent Captain on the field, and I swing with it, am I allowed to use the attacking Preeminent to bring out the other Preeminent in my hand, and THEN use that one to bring out CotW since it is attacking as well? Or have some rules changes not allowing such a thing.
No, you can't do that. This is because the Preeminent Captain from your hand enters play already attacking, therefore his ability doesn't trigger.
What are yalls opinions on Martial Coup vs Planar Cleansing for a sweeper to include in this decks sideboard? I realize Coup fits our theme, however, it takes 7 mana to be truly effective as a sweeper. It leaves the field completely open with our 5 new soldiers at the advantage, but to me, most games are already over by the time we reach 7 mana it seems. Planar destroys everything for 6, which sucks when we have our HotP's up and running, or Elspeth's. But the sweep comes at a cheaper cost, and unless we're playing our cheaper cousins the Kithkins, generally this deck should be able to recover alot faster than most other decks with our nice one drops, and things like Ranger of Eos to tutor them up. I dont think Coup or Planar should be a maindeck card, I think they should only be brought in when we play against something that runs at a similar speed to us, such as kithkins, or even token decks.
Planar Cleansing is six mana and really quite sub-optimal. I think Hallowed Burial would be better as it doesn't kill our Honour of the Pure or Elspeth. That or Martial Coup, though we may need to run Burials just because of the cheaper cost. We could run two Burials maindeck and two Coups in the SB. Then we can bash for a few turns, drop Burial T5, then Captain of the Watch. That's almost a concession against most decks.

No, that has never worked because it triggers when Preeminent Captain attacks. If it is put into play attacking, it never attacked. Confusing, I know.
The entire time during the last match when I was color screwed and kept off double white I was thinking "Damnit Jaden, that troll-faced bastard might be right."
EDIT: Knight-Captain of Eos is kinda rubbish, but with preeminent captain and the fact that he himself is a soldier kinda make him worth while, ya know what I think I might try him out in boards against the mirror/token MU .
Excuse the ****** moment I misread knight for soldier (thanks rafiq)

The consenus would point too NO silence is a meta game choice which I run in a cascade and combo filled arena, on other notes 20 lands is too less unless your running ramp like elves.
I'll test the deck out today and post the result unless my urge too try out grixis Fae takes over......
MDU, knight captain of eos can't be cheated into play via preeminent.
I still can't shake the feeling that silence is just too good to pass up. It can easily make its way into the rotation and shore up a lot of our matchups.

Knight-Captain of Eos isn't a Soldier, he is a Knight. I personally prefer him because:
a) He won't rotate in October
b) I like the Fog effect

Yah, I'm sorry I should really read the card before I post rubbish (I corrected it) in that case Knight-Captain of Eos is rubbish he is much too heavy too be worth while.

Then play silence no need to be a sheep and follow the herd, isn't that the point of the critique section. I stand by silence as a really strong card in this combo infested meta its great VS control and can shift the balance within aggro MU I mean silence after T2+ in the aggressive MU is bound too hurt especially if you can lay down a threat when they can't

So I matched up against jund cascade last night, and must admit, while it gives some problems, it does seem like a favorable matchup. Neither of us played sideboards.
In every game I missed a 1 drop, but was able to drop an armorsmith/Honor and then a captain/spectral. My opponent is one of the better players so he'd go after the preeminents before they could attack usually, only to have me drop another. The house for this matchup was definitely Captain of the watch. At one point I dropped one while attacking, had it pathed, and dropped another post combat.
Maelstrom pulse definitely hurt, but seeing the damage it can cause, it was generally pulsed with only 1-2 on the field.
BBE into Ball lightning was a definite pain, but was neutered with a preem blocking and a harms way redirected to BBE when preem was 4/4. Jund charm was generally a non issue unless he dropped two in one shot, or bolted as well, generally making it a 1-2 situation. Post sideboard I'm sure we'd have problems as he stated he'd just thought hemorrage.
Martial coup was pretty good as well as a two of. I cast a 4 point coup, and pumped with Ajani to reestablish board position after losing a few blockers to burn and bbe>Ball.
And it was agreed that post sideboard, canonist/silence forge tender would pretty much wreck him. Imo, bit blast/pulse was probably my biggest worry in this deck.
I'm dropping captain to 3 (since I only own 3) elspeth from 2 to 1 (only own 1) and spectral to 3 (own 3) In. their places I'm going to try 2 squires and a Ranger of Eos. I should have my Coups by friday and be set for FNM
I know my formatting sucks, but hopefully you understand what I was trying to say 8)

I don't know about you, but somehow after the sideboard I can see this hurting you vs Jund. GRB gives them access to Stillmoon Cavalier, Chaotic Backlash, Deathmark, and Snakeform in dire cases. I agree that Burrenton Forge-Tender and Ethersworn Canonist post-sideboard do well against Jund Cascade but I don't like Silence. It doesn't work against one of their biggest threats, Bit Blast, as they just play it in response to your Silence and Cascade all over the stack before they let Silence resolve. You could play it with the Cascade trigger and stop the Maelstrom Pulse, but I see a better play somehow. Ultimately, it's a metagame call because the spell does nothing against Faeries and 5cc, but if you have play in an area full of Elfball and Kithkin Aggro, then it's a great card. Good luck!
I totally agree about silence. My opponent and I talked about it last night, and he asked why I just wouldn't silence on his upkeep. I explained that If I do that, then you just cascade BBE>ball lightning, bitblast>BBE>pulse, whatever next turn. I told him, if I wait for you to play, and use it reactively with the trigger on the stack, you still have to reveal your cards, and I deny you the play. We both aggreed that against jund cacade, that's the best way to utilize silence, esp when Canonist is not on the board.
martial coup is obviously better but maybe as a 1 or 2 of in the sideboard.
I mainboard 2 of them. I was talking about more 'hosers'. Since Ball lightning doesn't stick around, I'd rather try and see it get on the bottom of their library than deal with it. and Usually if they do BBe>Ball I've just redirected 2 damage from the ball to the elf, and taken 7, which is keeps his board fairly clear.
i have silence in sideboard, mainly because it wrecks certain decks but dosen't do much against most others. generally all it does is mess with your opponents tempo, which is great but my meta is full of cascade aggro decks, so i have it ready in the side for combo elves and control.
martial coup is also just a sideboard card for me because i need to spend my time racing my opponents, my matches are generally over by turn 4-5, not 7-8 when martial coup becomes relevent.
as for the whole "no elspeth maindeck for me" thing i just find that ajani is much more relevent when i need to race when elspeth seems kinda mediocre(she's amazing, just not in my current meta).
Kern and MDU can you post what your FNM builds are going to be? I am having troubles finalizing what I want to go in with. This is what I have currently, I would like to note this is without windbrisk and spectral because I don't own any.
Basically I need to decide if it worth it to main any paths and if not what should replace them. Also I have 2 Planar Cleansings that I was thinking about SBing but I wasn't sure I would ever even play them. I decided to go with Burrenton Forge-Tender in main instead of Akrasan Squire because based on tuesday my meta is heavy heavy R/B burn. If I go up against a non-red deck I would just swap the two.
But please post what your builds are going to be, I am just trying to decide how necessary the paths are? Maybe I should side the Elspeths?

I could use some better SB ideas. Atm, a good chunk of it is devoted to dealing with decks with red in them. In my current meta, everyone has some variant of deck with red in it, with few being Fae or Kithkin. Forge Tender has saved me so many games it's ridiculous. I dont have Pithing Needles or Runed Halos, so I chose O-Rings to deal with Planeswalker heavy decks. Anyone think they could help me out?

I'm new of the forums, but I'm an old mtg player. My question is: What happened to Ranger of Eos? Is it worth playing it? Because I'm making a soldier deck too, and I noticed that the last decklists posted here are not running him. So that's my question, should I use him?
I think I've learned to treat Magic cards like baseball cards: keep 'em in a binder in numerical order, don't play with 'em, try to finish the set and just keep my head down.

I use him, people are playing around with different builds right now, and got bored of him or something.
i never had ranger in my deck...maybe i should consider him...nah, he's good but not right for my deck.
and again, i'm not playing elspeth in my deck because i just don't like her in there, she dosen't do much for me and i'd rather spend my turn 4 play on ajani or pumping with mirror entity, my only problem with elspeth is that she wasn't fast enough and in my meta, i need to be fast.

Here is the list I'll be taking today (if I don't play UBR fae)
Heres the list I'll be trying for friday, its a shame I couldn't find room for my fouth silence since like me many of the guys which came back form national are going too be testing the top decks or producing anti-decks. (I presume combo, Silence/Ethersworn Canonist builds and control)
So we won't go back arguing about silence again (I think 2 pages is enough) silence is a meta choice too deal with combo it works better then Ethersworn Canonist MB since it can still greatly impact other MU as well beside combo. {read Rafiq's post}
VS Combo Elves/vaults *highly played, based on national*
In:
03 Ethersworn Canonist
02 Elspeth, Knight-Errant [Flying hurts elves....]
Out:
03 Ranger of Eos
01 Figure of Destiny
01 Burrenton Forge-Tender
VS Fae
In:
03 Wispmare
Out:
01 Burrenton Forge-Tender
01 Ranger of Eos
01 Veteran Armorsmith
VS Control
In:
01 Burrenton Forge-Tender
02 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
Out:
03 Veteran Swordsmith
VS Kithken, Mirror, Token
In:
03 Wispmare
03 Soul Warden
03 Harm's Way
Out:
01 Burrenton Forge-Tender
02 Figure of Destiny
03 Path to Exile
03 Silence
If you don't agree on my SB plans feel free too post your own good luck soldiering on in FNM guys, maybe it will be ready before the next PTQ (3 more weeks for me)
The only change I made was replacing Soul Warden for +01 Path to Exile and +02 Unmake, some of my friends builds are including some random creatures which if I can't deal with, will tip the balance within their next turn e.g. Baneslayer Angel
I seen this monster in play during national as well, some control deck run it, as well as kithken decks.....its a card which I think many of you will encounter sooner or later during PTQ and FNM since most decks only run 4 direct removal (Jund build have pulse, white builds have path heck even burn only run 4 terminate or doom blade....) First strike, flying and the 5/5 gives it all the evasion it needs too deal with everything else....
Ok guys good luck if I play soldier I post the results

I seen this monster in play during national as well, some control deck run it, as well as kithken decks.....its a card which I think many of you will encounter sooner or later during PTQ and FNM since most decks only run 4 direct removal (Jund build have pulse, white builds have path heck even burn only run 4 terminate or doom blade....) First strike, flying and the 5/5 gives it all the evasion it needs too deal with everything else....
Ok guys good luck if I play soldier I post the results

Woops:facepalm: Yeah, you'd be right then. I will change that.
I play Reveillark instead with my recent addition of Mirror Entity.
Modern Naya Zoo
And about Reveillark: I always thought about using it, at least one. So I was very pleased when I saw your decklist running it. I was not the only one
