I think because it helps out so much vs RDW, which can be a major pain for this deck unless you sideboard correctly. Personally, I think SB Runed Halo and maybe somethink else like Finks are enough for that MU.
Fink? Runed Halo? It's all about the BFT. Oh, and BFT really stands for "best f***ing tech".
Meadowgrain is just bad in fish, as is that UW list in the OP. It just doesn't justify messing with synergy (especially late-game) for a card that might buy you a turn or two. I'm honestly shocked that it got 5th at the tourney. Then again, Quillspike combo was in the top 8
I'd rather have vendilion clique to hate out a firespout/***/any removal and is relevant at any point in the game.

See that is what i thought. If you want to go the UW route I'd try something like this:
I've been testing it out alot and its been great so far.
idk if it is smart running conclaves... they cipt which hurts the tempo alot.
now, if your in a control enviorment, i suggest adding larks to the maindeck.
my list is almost like yours, i might change it, it is something like...
-1 Ponder
-1 Clique
-2 banneret
-4 Cursecatcher
+1 Sower
+3 Wrath of God
+3 Lark
(lands are also diff, but doens't matter)
My list was made to be aggro MD, and still do great vs control decks. Even if i dont wrath, the fact that i can go Lark, then wrath or Wrath than evoke and just have supperior card control.. .is what makes it great.
----
now... would i run 4 Sowers if i had 4..... Sure, just because the amount of Kithkin decks around now is just crazy... and even in the mirror it is also great(at least when Lord of atlantis was around).
As for running Vendillion Cliques.... idk, the option of a pre-counterspell on a card is sometimes risky, Some situations you can draw yourself a card if you really needed too.
If you want to go more anti-control heavy(anti Toast/Faeries), which i might end up doing and just sb in the anti-aggro, which w/ Cryptic is already solid. So.. i would(from my list) -3 *** +3 Cliques just md, to beat these control lists. The fact it will still die to a 1/1 Token in faeries is okay, but the option to bury a cryptic can win you games. Or vs toast to kill such.

note, i am going to try to make a solid list by... Wednesday, ill post it, see what you all want, and well, hope you run it @ states.
Knight of meadowgrain is pretty powerful in this deck, as it is one of of the greatest two drops of this format. It is good in combat against fae and QnT. This deck's aggro face is actually pretty strong.
In my experience RDW is this decks worst MU. Faeries is pretty bad because we get owned by bitterblossom and agony warp. It depends on whether or not you are using UW or five color though. Five color is a bit weaker in both MUs depending on the decklists they have.
Various aggro like RDW can be somewhat dealt with with sideboard.
I've actually had no trouble with RDW, I maindeck 11 counter spells, and I sideboard Negate, Wrath of God, and Crib Swap in. It does the trick rather nicely.

I don't know what your list now is currently, but RDW doesn't really fear counterspells. They'll just play efficient creatures and burn your stuff. Every of their cards are threatening, so I find the MU hard.

And it is versatile overall, it proves to be one of the best spot removal cards that I can find for the colors. I have also decided to move the Vendilion Clique's to sideboard, in favor of Sower of Temptation's.
I cannot cut out Sygg and Wake Thrasher. This deck's main weapon is the synergy/combo between Sygg and Wake Thrasher. I can use Sygg's ability on the opponent's end phase using all available mana to pump the Thrasher on my turn. Then, when the Thrasher (now pumped up) attacks, Sygg can protect it, allowing maximum damage through.
The other Merfolks are there for support contrary to the original Merfolk deck design. Of course, if the Sygg/Thrasher duo is not there, the other Merfolk can carry on the offensive.
Not all RDW's run Hell's thunder. Oblivion ring is just better in general for the main deck purposes. Besides, I would only run one or two crib swap and only if your merfolk or faerie count isn't that high,
imo if demigod comes down i would rather get rid of it for W with banneret without it dealin me 5 dmgs.. even at normal casting cost i would rather suck up the 1/1 token rather then 5 dmg. some goes for hell's thunder, thunderblust, and most of the QnT win-cons should be gotten rid of once and for all instead of waiting for them to counter-bounce with cryptic command. same goes with fae and mirror....
I don't care if he's sober or not, he's right. Crib Swap is just better...maybe not main, but I side them...and I have no Oblivion Ring's anywhere to speak of. (Maybe in my common box...)

-1 Wake Thrasher
+ 3 Stonybrook Bannerets. Atleast 3.

Because the 1/1 token is relevant when trying to be aggro with this deck. With the bonus of getting rid of more things than Crib swap.
